Ooh-la-la La Madeleine

Mosaics

I like to have lunch with my friends at La Madeleine's, but since so much of their food is bread based, I usually have the same couple of things over and over, which is kind of a drag. Before I was diagnosed with celiac disease, I used to get their mushroom soup every time it was the soup du jour. Oh, it is yummy!

After I got my diagnosis, when I questioned them, I was told by La Mad's employees that the tuna and chicken salad have bread crumbs in them, that the mushroom soup is thickened with flour, that the potato galette (sp?) does NOT have flour in it. So I gave up my mushroom soup, avoided the chicken salad, and continued to enjoy the galette.

So yesterday I had lunch there and arrived several minutes before the people I was meeting. The place was empty, so I took the opportunity to quiz the employees about the food. I thought I might be able to try something new. At first, they told me, "Oh, no we don't put bread crumbs in the chicken salad! Who would do that?" But they looked unsure, so I told them, "I need to know for sure because it will make me sick if I eat bread." So they went and got the manager, who went and got the recipe book. He checked for me.

YES, the potato galette has flour in it.

YES, the chicken and tuna salads have bread crumbs in them.

NO, the mushroom soup does not have flour in it! He read the ingredients to me and it does, however, have soy sauce in it. So...the question is, what kind of soy sauce? Kikkoman? They put wheat in their soy sauce.

NO, the potato soup does not have flour in it.

I decided to have the mushroom soup on the chance that it does not have wheated soy sauce. I didn't get sick. The soup was lovely. But I'm going to try to find out about the soy sauce before I eat it again, just to be sure.

I used to love to eat at La Madeline before my diagnosis. I sure do miss their French Onion Soup, and the Salmon Salad... but they mix it with croutons... and I couldn't get them to mix in a clean bowl (way too busy)... so no more La Madeline for me... too bad.

I'm shocked that they wouldn't make that one small concession and mix your salad in a clean bowl! How much time would that take - 10 seconds?
