We really enjoyed the lunch buffet in the newly opened Saffron Restaurant in Middletown, NY. The buffet consists of cucumber salad, lettuce salad, Rasam(Soup), Pakora, Spinach Saag, Veg. Rice, Basmati Rice, Chana Masala, Chicken Curry, Dahl, Mixed Vegetables in sauce, Lamb, Tandoori Chicken and Dessert.

We will go again. Anyway interested in joining us sometime?

Where exactly in Middletown, is this stuff just on the regular buffet with no modifications necessary???? I am a big fan of trying ethnic food, and would LOVE to try this when I come home from college!

Glad you had a good experience!

Almost all of the food on the lunch buffet does not need modifications. Of course, the Roti(Indian flat bread) is made from wheat so we don't order any. Also, their Pakoras can be made with wheat or chickpea flour so you need to watch that to. But the other food is fine. We still ask the waiter about each food on the lunch buffet because I am more comfortable double checking. He was accommodating to our requests. Please, the more people with this food intolerance that request wheat-free choices the better. We are also trying to get the cook to offer Dolsas more often. This is a crepe-like bread made from rice flour. We are hoping with enough requests...that this becomes a common gluten-free food choice at this restaurant.

They are located in the large parking lot off of Dolson Ave. in the former Ground Round restaurant.

Welcome to the forum, @yellowstone! The most common ones seem to be dairy (casein), oats, eggs, soy and corn. "Formed" meat products (because of the "meat glue" used to hold their shape) is a problem for some. But it can be almost anything on an individual basis as your sensitivity to rice proves, since rice is uncommonly a "cross reactor" for celiacs. Some celiacs seem to not do well with any cereal grains.

What foods can trigger a response in people with gluten sensitivity? I've read that there are foods that, although they don't contain gluten, can cause problems for people with gluten sensitivity because they contain proteins similar to gluten that trigger a response in the body. I've seen that other cereals are included: corn, rice... also chicken, casein. I would like to know what other foods can cause this reaction, and if you have more information on the subject, I would like to know about it. Right now, I react very badly to rice and corn. Thank you.
