Wow, what a crappy week! No pun intended!! :(

Anyway, for the last three months give or take, I've been off my Vitamin supplements. At the beginning I just kept forgetting a few days a week, then I set an appt. for blood work to see what the past year of gluten-free living is doing for me. So I figured I should go off all supplements completely to give an accurate picture of what my body is actually getting from the food.

Yesterday I had my blood work done, and immediately took my Folic Acid, Iron, Calcium Citrate, 2000 mg of Vit. C (could be the culprit, I cut that in half this morning) and Glucosamine. Today my guts are wrecked, including abdominal pain/cramps and nausea that I don't usually get when I get "glutinated".

Other possible culprits could be, Yesterday AM's two McDonalds Hashbrowns (previously I've not had a problem with them, however these ones were not fresh and could have been contaminated while sitting in the warmer) OJ from McDonalds, or the new brand of Vodka cooler, orange flavoured. I didn't see anything in the ingredients, however I remember Mom cautioning me about Orange Pop when I first went gluten-free. I've had this cooler before, and haven't connected it to any reaction, however I did have one on Monday as well from the same box and was sick Tuesday.... possibly this batch??

Got to be a darn detective with this disease!!! :angry:

Anyway, does anyone else have any input on the Vitamin angle?? The sudden supplementation after a complete absence? These are all the same bottles I was on before, so no new brands, batches or the like.

Calcium, if taken on an empty stomach, can make you nauseous as well. (BTW, make sure you're getting enough complimentary vits to make the calcium be of any good. Most diets (even very healthy ones, I've tried doing the calculations before) are short in magnesium, which is required for calcium to be effective for bone mass. (There are other required nutrients as well... zinc, for instance... but magnesium is one of the biggest problems since you need it in a relatively high ratio to calcium.)

      Last month I got blood tests done. My iron level was at 205 ug/dL and 141 ug/dL iron binding capacity unsaturated, 346 ug/dl total iron binding capacity, 59 transferrin % saturation. My ferritin level was at 13 so I got tested for celiac disease last week. My tTG-IgA is <.05, DGP IgA is 4.9 and ferritin level is 9. My doctor didn't order other celiac disease tests. In 2021 I was dealing with severe constipation and hemorrhoids. I'm no longer dealing with constipation. I still deal with hemorrhoids but only about once a week. Also, I've been dealing with very pale skin for at least 5 years. Do you think I have celiac disease?

      In the study linked above, the little girl switched to a gluten free diet and gained enough weight that that fat pad was replenished and surgery was not needed.   Here's the full article link...       Hello, @Jordan Carlson, So glad you're feeling better.   Tecta is a proton pump inhibitor.  PPI's also interfere with the production of the intrinsic factor needed to absorb Vitamin B12.  Increasing the amount of B12 you supplement has helped overcome the lack of intrinsic factor needed to absorb B12. Proton pump inhibitors also reduce the production of digestive juices (stomach acids).  This results in foods not being digested thoroughly.  If foods are not digested sufficiently, the vitamins and other nutrients aren't released from the food, and the body cannot absorb them.  This sets up a vicious cycle. Acid reflux and Gerd are actually symptoms of producing too little stomach acid.  Insufficient stomach acid production is seen with Thiamine and Niacin deficiencies.  PPI's like Tecta also block the transporters that pull Thiamine into cells, preventing absorption of thiamine.  Other symptoms of Thiamine deficiency are difficulty swallowing, gagging, problems with food texture, dysphagia. Other symptoms of Thiamine deficiency are symptoms of ADHD and anxiety.  Vyvanse also blocks thiamine transporters contributing further to Thiamine deficiency.  Pristiq has been shown to work better if thiamine is supplemented at the same time because thiamine is needed to make serotonin.  Doctors don't recognize anxiety and depression and adult onset ADHD as early symptoms of Thiamine deficiency. Stomach acid is needed to digest Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in fruits and vegetables.  Ascorbic acid left undigested can cause intestinal upsets, anxiety, and heart palpitations.   Yes, a child can be born with nutritional deficiencies if the parents were deficient.  Parents who are thiamine deficient have offspring with fewer thiamine transporters on cell surfaces, making thiamine deficiency easier to develop in the children.  A person can struggle along for years with subclinical vitamin deficiencies.  Been here, done this.  Please consider supplementing with Thiamine in the form TTFD (tetrahydrofurfuryl disulfide) which helps immensely with dysphagia and neurological symptoms like anxiety, depression, and ADHD symptoms.  Benfotiamine helps with improving intestinal health.  A B Complex and NeuroMag (a magnesium supplement), and Vitamin D are needed also.

      @pothosqueen, Welcome to the tribe! You'll want to get checked for nutritional deficiencies and start on supplementation of B vitamins, especially Thiamine Vitamin B 1.   There's some scientific evidence that the fat pad that buffers the aorta which disappears in SMA is caused by deficiency in Thiamine.   In Thiamine deficiency, the body burns its stored fat as a source of fuel.  That fat pad between the aorta and digestive system gets used as fuel, too.
