Diagnosed About 3 Weeks Ago...living In Boston For Summer

I was just diagnosed with Celiac 3 weeks ago and I immediately moved to Boston from Dallas, TX. I'm only in Boston for the summer and I am looking for anyone in this area to help with all this new gluten free stuff. I'm also looking for anyone in the DFW area for when I go back in august. I'm trying really hard to get the hang of being gluten free but it is hard and depressing. I'm also pretty shy and therefore terrified of going out to dinner.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Tessa

There are some good options around Boston...If you like Mexican, I am a big fan of Chipotle (just get in a bowl instead of a wrap). PFChangs has a gluten-free menu, Maggianos has great gluten-free pasta, I've had the pizza from Uno's, one time I was ok, another time i had a reaction. I believe a new place near the North End has gluten-free Pizza, it's called Nebo, I haven't tried it yet.

Hope this helps!

Hi Tessa,

Welcome to Boston! I just moved here from California a couple of months ago.

If you like pizza, there is a place in Cambridge/Somerville, specifically Porter Square, called Zing's Pizza that has gluten-free pizza that's pretty good. Look them up online, they use organic ingredients and if you want vegetarian they do that too (not sure about vegan).

As far as mexican food, if you go to real mexican restaurants/taquerias, tacos are safe as well as nachos because they are made with corn tortillas. Any americanized version (qdoba, most "mexican grill" type restaurants) are usually a pain in the butt because most of them don't have soft corn tortillas, and their hard shell ones are cooked in the same fryer that they cook other gluten containing foods in.

The Boston Market chain has a menu that lists allergens. The last time I went there, the chicken was safe, the vegetables, and the mashed potatoes (make SURE you tell them no gravy, it's made with flour).

Indian restaurants are great. All the curries are safe, as well as the rice. You can also eat the papadum (those thin, flat crispy bread-like circular things) because they are made with flax and something else (not flour). No naan, though, that is like pita bread, and don't eat the samosas. I just tell them no bread or flour of any kind with my order.

Thai food is also good. Curries are safe as well as rice. So are most of the soups. I went to a Thai Restaurant called Montien on Stuart St. a couple months ago, told the waitress I could not eat wheat or gluten, and she told me what was safe on the menu.

If you have other questions, email me at drmrchk@sbcglobal.net . Please put celiac forum or gluten free in the subject line so I don't accidentally delete it as spam. Good luck and again, please contact me if you have further questions.

Renee

I looked further into Thiamax Vitamin B1 by objective nutrients and read all the great reviews. I think I will give this a try. I noticed only possible side affect is possibly the first week so body adjusts. Life Extensions carries Benfotiamine with Thiamine and the mega one you mentioned. Not sure if both in one is better or seperate. some reviews state a laxative affect as side affect. SHould I take with my super B complex or just these 2 and multivitamin? I will do further research but I appreciate the wonderful explanation you provided on Thiamine.

There are other Celiac genes. HLA DQ 2 and HLA DQ 8 show up in people from Northern European descent.   People of Mediterranean descent have HLA DQ 7.  People of Asian descent have HLA DQ 9.   There's other Indigenous populations that have other HLA genes that code for Celiac disease.   Are you still having symptoms?   What do you include in your diet?  Are you vegetarian? Are you taking any prescription medication?  Omeprazole?  Metformin?   Do you have anemia?  Thyroid problems? Are you taking any vitamins or herbal supplements?

There are eight essential B vitamins.  They are all water soluble.  Any excess of B vitamins is easily excreted by the kidneys.   Thiamine is Vitamin B 1.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Benfotiamine and TTFD are forms of Thiamine that the body can utilize very easily.   The form of Thiamine in the supplements you mentioned is Thiamine Mononitrate, a form that the body does not absorb well and does not utilize well.  Only about thirty percent of the amount on the label is actually absorbed in the small intestine.  Less than that can actually be used by the body.  Manufacturers add thiamine mononitrate to their products because it's cheap and shelf-stable.  Thiamine and other B vitamins break down when exposed to light and heat and over time.  Thiamine Mononitrate is a form that does not break down over time sitting on a shelf waiting for someone to buy them.  What makes Thiamine Mononitrate shelf stable makes it difficult for the body to turn into a useable form.  In fact, it takes more thiamine to turn it into a useable form.   Gastrointestinal Beriberi is a localized shortage of Thiamine in the gastrointestinal tract.  High carbohydrate meals can result in gastrointestinal symptoms of Gastric Beriberi.  Fiber is a type of carbohydrate.  So, high fiber/carbohydrate snacks could trigger Gastric Beriberi.   Since blood tests for Thiamine and other B vitamins are so inaccurate, the World Health Organization recommends trying Thiamine and looking for health improvement because it's safe and nontoxic.
