Cosmetics, Anyone?

Does it matter if a Celiac wears Gluten-Free cosmetics or not? I don't know what to buy. I bought a whole line of cosmetics from Clinique and started to use it and now my eyes hurt/burn a lot. I had to stop wearing it; yet, I don't understand because their website said their products are allergy-tested, fragrance free. What the heck? I heard Neutrogena had a good gluten-free make-up? Does anyone know if this is true? What about foundation, lipsticks, etc.? I feel really ugly lately since this disaster started and I'd love to begin wearing make-up again. One problem. I've got symptoms of Dermatitis Herpetiformis and it hurts. Its not severe on my face but my skin is still sensitive. Any advice?

I've heard it does make a difference to get gluten-free cosmetics. I personally do use gluten-free for face, cheeks, and lips because it is my son who is Celiac, not me. I don't want to gluten him if he kisses me with makeup on. I have heard that quite a bit of Clinique is NOT gluten-free so that may be your problem. I use mostly Bare Minerals, Smashbox, and Mac. I've heard Covergirl has several gluten-free products also. Someone has posted a Neutragena list on one of these boards somehwere...maybe do a search and see if you can find it. I do use Neutragena Lip Moisture Shine Lip Soother and it is gluten-free. You will have to check with the manufacturers because not ALL the items from each line is gluten-free...they do still have some products that contain gluten so you should ask before you shop.

Don't forget to check your shampoos and hair conditioners as well.

The long hair forum has some good ideas on natural hair care products, even if you don't have long hair. I used a water and apple cider vinegar finish on my hair to condition it, then a tiny dab of coconut oil or shea butter rubbed on my hands and then into my hair. I have also washed my hair with a simple inexpensive cucumber bath gel I don't react to at all, so I'm assuming its okay (the ingredient list looks very okay). I have also used Ivory bar soap or castile coconut soap. The California Baby stuff is supposed to be gluten free, but it's so pricey I haven't indulged.

For eyeliner, I use a mineral eyeliner that you dip a wet brush into, that I got at the local health food store.

You can get the Bare minerals stuff and mix it with cornstarch if you're not corn reactive, to get more blotting power.

I've got a tube of Eco Bella lipstick that I would like to replace, but am having trouble finding it in stores. Some of the Revlons might be okay, call or email the company.

Biggest problem is finding mascara I don't react to, I wear it only a few times a year because of this.

Try Smashbox for mascara. I know for sure that the BIONIC has gluten so AVOID that one, but I think the Lash DNA is gluten-free.

Thanks Scott. Those articles are really interesting. I’m cutting out gluten for 6 weeks but honestly I’m not sure I even want to reintroduce it! I ate at a restaurant for the first time on Wednesday and then Thursday was really uncomfortable and had a few trips to the loo.. wonder if there was some cross contamination 🤷‍♀️ if that’s how my body reacts after not eating it for 3 weeks I’m not sure it’s worth reintroducing it and re testing for celiac! It might have been a coincidence I realise that I’m not going to feel better all of a sudden and my gut is probably still trying to heal. Thanks for your supportive message!

Reference range 0.00 to 10.00 means that within that range is normal, so not celiac. There are other antibodies that can be present in celiac disease and they don’t all have to be positive to have celiac.  I’m sure someone else will post a link to an article describing them! Plus, if you are IgA deficient the celiac IgA tests won’t be accurate.

Great to have another UK person on the forum!   Re: blood tests, it sounds as if you are being well monitored but if you have any further concerns about blood tests or anything else, do not hesitate to start a new thread. Cristiana

Julia530 - I have the same gene structure and most of the symptoms you have experienced plus more.....I agree with you whole heartedly!! There are approximately 10 (NOT TWO) genes that can predispose a person to having Celiac Disease. I read in Pub Med that HLA DQA1:05  can result in Celiac Disease in approximately 1 in 875 people. While it is obviously more rare it is NOT BENIGN and should not go unnoticed. Go get the book "NO GRAIN, NO PAIN" and I highly suggest you read it cover to cover. It is written by a Chiropractor who quit his medical education when the VA wouldn't allow him to treat the Veterans with debilitating arthritis with a grain free diet. I have been grain free for over 10 years now.....the facts are we are being lied to! There is a form or gluten in every protein in every grain on the planet of which there are 1000 or more. Just because all they are testing for is the Gliadin in wheat is no excuse to report only partial facts.
