Gluten Withdrawal?

So I thought I had been gluten free for awhile (3 years), and a couple months ago thought I would try introducing oatmeal to my diet. Well I realized that the oatmeal I've been eating is NOT gluten free. I had been having slight glutening symptoms but for some reason never could pin point it (stupid me). Now I've stopped eating oatmeal a week ago and my body is freaking out!

Symptoms

- Extreme fluid retention (like almost 20lbs I can't fit in my clothes)

- lots of D

- depression

- foggy headed

- fatigue

- aches

- raised body temp

- acne flare up (also itchy)

- insomnia

... Is this normal? I'm worried and a complete wreck ... and I know stressing will only make it worse.

Anyone have withdrawal symptoms like these?

Does it usually get worse before it gets better?

If you had withdrawal symptoms how long did they last for you?

Thanks!

I'm sorry your unwell! :( I haven't been gluten free as long as you have (only for a month) but after I rapidly cut gluten out of my diet a month ago, the week and a half that followed was awful. I could only describe it as gluten withdrawal, as I felt worse than I did when eating gluten!

Bloating was horrible

Nausea wouldn't go away

Extreme fatigue and flu like symptoms

Horrible brain fog (couldn't concentrate or do university for work 2 weeks)

I just slept and sweated horribly

Was very pale!

Depression and moodiness

Horrible aches and pains

Migraines

But after 2 weeks I woke up and had more energy and began feeling better!

I'm guessing what you are going through is gluten withdrawal also. The best thing to do is rest, drink lots of herbal tea and water, sleep and just be lazy! Give your body time to heal and don't feel worried or guilty for resting. Try and book time off work/uni cancel any plans you have and you will be feeling fit in no time! I just treated it like the flu until I felt better. Literally just woke up one morning and I was human again!

Good luck and feel better soon!

I strongly recommend 2 dedicated gluten free (gluten-free) restaurants in my area (East Bay of San Francisco Bay Area) (2025) -- Life is Sweet Bakery and Café in Danville. I've been a few times with friends and tried multiple entrees and salads. All very good and worth having again. I've also tried a number of their bakery goods. All extremely good (not just "good for gluten-free"). https://lifeissweetbakeryandcafe.com/ -- Kitara Kitchen in Albany (they have additional locations). I've been once and had the "Buritto Bowl". Six individual items plus a sauce. Outstanding. Not just "for gluten-free", but outstanding in its own right. Vibrant flavors, great textures. I can't wait to go back. https://www.kitava.com/location/kitava-albany/

I'm 67 and have been celiac for 17yrs. I had cataract surgery and they put a gluten lens in my eye. Through a lot of research, I found out about MMA acrylic...it contains gluten. It took 6 months for me to find a DR that would remove it and replace it with a gluten-free lens . I have lost some vision in that eye because of it . I also go to a prosthodontist instead of a regular dentist because they are specialized. He has made me a night guard and a few retainers with no issues... where my regular dentist didn't care. I have really bad reactions to gluten and I'm extremely sensitive, even to CC. I have done so much research on gluten-free issues because of these Drs that just don't care. Gluten is in almost everything shampoo, lotion, food, spices, acrylic, medication even communion wafers! All of my Drs know and believe me I remind them often.... welcome to my world!

If this applies geographically, in the U.K., physicians will often declare a diagnosis of celiac disease based on the TTG-IGA antibody blood test alone if the score is 10x normal or greater, which your score is. There is very little chance the endoscopy/biopsy will contradict the antibody blood test.

TTG IgA reference range 0.0 to 14.9 KU/L

What was the reference range for that test? Each lab uses different reference ranges so a raw score like that makes it difficult to comment on. But it looks like a rather large number.
