I did it. I'm a heck of a lot older than 21 and I got a couple kids too! I'm Thirty six until next month *sigh*, 5'9" and 140-145lbs. Ive been gluten-free for 4 years or so.I started putting on too much weight in the first year of being gluten-free. I've always managed to stay athletic so the extra pounds weren't going to work for me! (an extra 20 lbs really throws your "center" off and you can't do moves you've practiced for!) First things first. I felt sorry for myself that I couldn't have pizza, donuts or other things other people took for granted. So I ate gluten-free food without thought. gluten-free snacks are considerably higher in calories than regular. Well, I wasn't really being honest with myself. People that make a habit of eating a lot of junk food DO have consequences! Celiac or not! They put on too much weight. So was I! So I nixed all the gluten-free junk food except for the occasional snack here and there and My weight went right back down to normal.

No big(or dissrespect). It's scary to not be able to keep weight on! From what I've experienced and read here it seems to take a while for the villi to regenerate after the gluten is removed. I started putting on weight a little bit at a time at first. It pretty much started about a month after. At 6 months I was feeling good! Then I started putting on extra weight.
The advice I've always heard to people who are having low weight issues was to get checked out to see if there are other issues that haven't been covered. Meanwhile, eat everything you that you can tolerate and try to put some weight on or at least try no to lose any. If you get dangerously underweight they have alternative medical ways to help you. It's better to put it on naturally if you can tho.PJ

I started to gain weight back and was happy! I'm sm/med boned and 5'9".I went from 120-140.Then 150. Then 155 headed for 160!!!! NOOOOOO! No more bragging about how I "could eat anything". LOL! I kicked all the snacks etc...out of the kitchen and went lighter on the gluten-free Chocolate cake! I exercize regularly(life long habit) and now I'm back at 145. I don't like watching my weight but it bets being sick all the d*mn time with a stick! PJ

The PAIN! Ug! I've had a large baby like Ravenwoodglass. The pain of gluten right up there! My labor to Mr.Big baby lasted 4 hrs ,it was over and I was happy! This lasts DAYS sometimes and I'm desperalty trying to function and just want to sit in the middle of the floor and cry. I "sedate" myself with catnip, take hot baths and sleep with a pillow smashed into my stomach. My periods have always been awful too. I passed out a couple times as a teen. I was so damn skinny I didn't even get my period until I was 16! At least I got it late so I had to suffer less! They've gotten much better since I've gone gluten-free. My PMS doesn't make me completely psycho either!("What in H*ll do you mean by what time is it???") Eeek! PJ

If I don't have advice I don't have anything! LOl!
I quit smoking before I figured out about the gluten. Honestly, I don't think I'd go for both at the same time. I'd almost bet a kidney that I'd be setting myself up to fail and feel guilty when I did! I understand that thinking behind it tho."Why not just get all the sucky stuff over with at once!"
If I eat any gluten I am more sensitive to hard-to-digest foods like dairy(casein). I just follow a bland diet and wait it out. Everyone is very individual on this issue. It will probably be very specific to you what you can or can't eat along with the Celiac. It sucks but I remind myself that I CAN do something to prevent most of my episodes. It's no longer some d**n mystery why I feel crappy.
Also, sometimes it takes a long time for your body to heal! It probably took about 6 months before I looked down and exclaimed happily,"I don't look like a starving person with stick legs/arms and a hugeantic stomach!"
Quitting smoking made me restless and a little, well I'm totally lying....very,very cranky. I was awful!
I used that restlessness, anger, and frustration and channeled it into Kickboxing/Martial Arts. Beating the heck out of a bag really helped! So did sparring! They've got some quick, well trained and big guys that will give you all the workout you can dish! Whoo hoo! "Good energy" sounds like a compliment when you're flailing wildly in frustration and anger from kicking an addiction! PJ

Ouch Debbie! That's how I learn too!
I was told my life long stomach problems were "in my head" and because I was "so high strung" by the Dr's in my family. "The physician that treats himself has a fool for a patient" sort of thing. We were too close for any kind of clinical detachment. However, the Prozac did help the depression until I found out what was wrong so it was a win/lose sort of situation like most things.
So... when my youngest and I eat gluten,we get sick. Period. Medicine isn't infallible and people know their bodies better than a stranger no matter what that stranger might or might not have seen or studied.
Also, I have noticed that a happy medium is the way to go! In everything. Eating 3 or 4 boxes of cookies,a whole cake(hadn't had one in 3 yrs and I was skinny darn it!) or anything else that takes on an extreme is likely to have negative effects. Also, if I get glutened I am much more sensitive to the foods I can eat fine in moderation as well. I hope you get better soon.PJ

Wow! You really sound like you get the neurological thing going bad! I had chronic,life-long depression before I went gluten-free. Thank God for psychotrophic drugs(in my case Prozac) until I figured out what was wrong!
I use catmint(sedative)/meditation/self-help books with positive reinforcement and hope for the best. My syptoms are more physical but I do tend to get uptight/obsessive about stuff too if I don't watch it and remind myself it's a symptom of a reaction. Also, I noticed that regular exercize helps me with everything including getting sick/glutened and managing my symptoms. You might also want to see if there is something your Dr. can do for you on these occassions. Sounds very intense.PJ

An MD with an open mind!!!! Wow! Hen's teeth! There are 4 MD's in my family and I've been to a lot of medical community events and all ,but have met maybe a handful of open minded MD's. You're special!
I'm new to this forum but have been gluten-free for quite some time. Self DX. (I was right.Gluten hurts!) I'm somewhat "into" home remedies. Bananas help. I don't drink often so no help there. I avoid too much rich food (restaurants usually are) and fast food(no offence anyone) isn't worth the money you spend on icky tasting food.Except IN and OUT.In California I never got sick there unless I overdid the fries. There isn't an IN and OUT in Texas so no fast food.
My best remedy is old fashioned and should be tried in very small amounts first! Catnip tea. I'm not a feline so, no, I don't get high. My cat will tho. I put several leaves of Catmint in water, boil it,add tea and a LOT of sugar because catnip tastes hideous. In summer I pour the whole cup over a PLASTIC cup of ice for a more refreshing, cool beverage in our H*llish Texas heat in the summer.
Don't mind my spelling I'm too lazy for spell check and I'm very dyslexic. Sorry.
Cautions about Catnip/ catnip teas. Catnip is kind of like Chamomeal. It's a naturally occuring "weed" from Europe that has seditive properties. It is not hallucinogenic(no DHT or alkaloid compounds),it IS a seditive for a lot of people so don't drive, use heavy machinery or make big decisions if you feel sleepy from it!Catnip/mint isn't regulated by any government agency. You'll have to try it on your own. I have never heard of a negative reaction but I'm never looked for them or done a comprehensive study or anything. I'm just a stay-at-home-mom.
It's in the mint family. If you don't tolerate real mint, don't bother trying it.
Easy to grow in full sun. In the right areas(moist, cool, loamy acid soil where you can grow Camellias,Azaleas etc... )it will turn into it's own version of Kudzu and choke out everything else! No joke! Choke out the grass and everything. Henbit is also in the mint family and it will take over the lawn. I grow mine in a container.
Let's say you live in a hot climate with alkaline soil and want to grow it. It will take over anywhere you water on any kind of regular basis. It will even grow in a pond.
So....if you'd like to grow Catnip/mint container it. If you have great soil container it over cement.PJ

Daffy, I wondered if my mom might have had a false neg. My dad wont get tested and my mom definalty wont get re-tested so I'm probably going to end up getting tested for the gene if I just have to know.Honestly I really don't. Either way, the end result is going to be the same. My youngest and I do not do well eating gluten at all and need to keep a few other foods very moderate.
Most of my family is in medicine(Four MDs,quite a few RNs,some physical therapists, hospice/home health etc...) so I really have a grasp of what a DX can do for you.( Not much but raise your health insurance rates above already over inflated prices or you're cancelled AND rejected for new insurance under the "pre-exsisting condition" B.S. they pull. ) Drs and the RNs helping them, rarely if ever listen and most aren't too hot at looking beyond the most obvious/typical symptoms like it's a contest to see if it's "real". Sick is sick. They might just label you a generic NOS and some vague "we really don't know" condition like IBS and send you with a vague list of things that may/may not work and will probably be so off base you will feel worse.A good Dr or nurse will tell you to listen to your body and do what you think is best for yourself anyway.
My son and I feel so much better off gluten. My family and I are so happy my chronic stomachaces with the depressing bloating(always a flattering look) and no more depression medication/depression are the norm FINALLY! Despite having to watch what I eat I feel like a well person and that is worth it's weight in gold! PJ
(Off soap box now!) Looking at the pics tho it's not a wonder if this thing is genetically based! LOL!PJ

PJKR here I've been gluten-free for about 4 yrs and I still make mistakes. Mostly I get nailed with barley/malt and not checking the update pages. Duncan Hines frosting got me really good! I remember going through my healthfood store a few times muttering,"Wheat free isn't gluten free" to myself. I can be sick for up to a week and get real cranky! I also have gotten sick and tore through labels only to find out I was just sick and it had nothing to do with gluten.
Um I kind of noticed a certain look was on this board before I decided to sign up. I'm tall (for a Celiac especially)5'9"/slender/reddish blonde/blue. My kids are also tall/skinny/blonde/blue and green.the oldest child has ADHD and my youngest has Asbergers. My dad (100% Czech) is where I believe I picked it up from. He has had all the same symptoms I do,diabetes is rampant on that side of the family, they look like me and they are all thin until they're 40 or so then suddenly start compulsively overeating and are always tired and hungry. I'm just shy of 40 so I'm glad I figured out they might be compensation eating? (Some Celiacs get obese from their body trying to get enough nutrition by constantly making them ravenously hungry!)
My mom has fibromyalgia and epilepsy but tested neg for Celiac. She's adopted but is French/Jap? She has lighter hair(blonde as a kid) and slanted brown eyes (no fold)and is fairly tall(5'6").PJ

Hi I'm PJ. I'm a newbie to this Celiac forum but not to being gluten-free. My youngest son and I stopped eating gluten about 4yrs ago in the summer. If I'm eating at home I don't think about it. We rarely eat anywhere else so it's not a common worry for me. I've already gone through "let's find every restaurant that serves gluten-free food and try it!" Stage.
Restaurant food is generally too rich and I can't tolerate too much even if it is gluten-free. It's ok to even eat at my dad's house. After a couple times of me being sick(breaking his heart) he's as careful as I am now. My DH,my dad and friends are all so supportive. It means so much to be around people that don't discount me as a "flake with a food issue". Making it easy to feel normal and follow the diet without getting defensive or feeling like an outcast. PJ

The lady that first mentioned Celiac to me(she had it) had always been 40 or so lbs overweight. She said "I'm one of the big ones...lucky me!" She might not have had the perfect weight but she had the best attiude! I remember saying "It CAN'T be wheat! Wheat is in EVERYTHING!!!" She nodded her head yes while laughing her head off. She was right! PJ
