ARCHIVED Should My Son Go Gluten Free?
kali-mist replied to kali-mist's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Thank you all so much for your responses. I will keep monitoring my son and watch out for any strange behavior/symptoms. And I will also try to find alternatives to all the wheat based snacks he eats just in case he ever has to go gluten-free one day. He does eat a lot of wheat. When we see the pediatrician I will ask about the gene testing too. -
ARCHIVED Should My Son Go Gluten Free?
kali-mist replied to kali-mist's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son has already gained back the weight he lost without going gluten-free in less than a week. Other than that 1 pound he lost he has never lost weight before or had trouble gaining. He always has lots of energy, has one good nap a day and never seems tired. He's always very happy and in a good mood - unless I tell him no or take something away from... -
ARCHIVED Should My Son Go Gluten Free?
kali-mist posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hello all, I have celiac, so naturally I am concerned that my 19month old son might have it. At his 18month check-up the doctor noticed that his height to weight ratio has dropped. He is in the 50th% for height and about the 25th% for weight but I guess there is a curve for the ratio between the two and he dropped off it. So she thought it would be... -
ARCHIVED What Are The Chances My Baby Could Have Celiac
kali-mist posted a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I'm really curious to know what the chances are the my baby will have or develop Celiac. Does anyone know? I would also like to know how long do I have to wait before I can get my baby tested. I would like to keep him/her away from gluten for awhile just in case but then I would have to give them a steady diet of gluten to get them tested right? -
ARCHIVED Pregnant And Constipated
kali-mist replied to kali-mist's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hi Everyone, Thanks for your replies and advise. I may just have to try the recipe for cereal. Hopefully it's as good as you say it is. I don't really eat a lot of gluten-free alternatives to gluten foods. I never eat bread or cereal or anything, just pasta everyonce and a while. Since my "problem" started I've stopped taking my prenatal everyday... -
I'm about 8 weeks pregnant and I am constipated. From what I hear this is a common occurance during pregnancy. I have severe stomach cramps because of it that are very uncomfortable. I've been drinking a glass of prune juice a day which kind of helps but it tastes awful, I'm really sick of it, plus I'm still getting cramps. Is there anything else I...

ARCHIVED Looking For gluten-free Coco Butter Cream
kali-mist posted a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Hello all, I'm 6 weeks pregnant and I want to try and prevent stretch marks. I've heard that coco butter is the best thing to use but so far the couple of creams I've looked at contain wheat. Does anyone know of a brand that does not? Does anyone know if Palmers brand is ok? I was told that is the best kind to use. If anyone knows of something else... -
Hello All, I was diagnosed with Celiac in March 07 and have been on the gluten-free diet ever since. I got married in August, and now I think I'm pregnant! We've kinda been trying (not doing anything to prevent it anyway) and my period is 6 days late. So yesterday my husband said I should take a home pregnancy test, and it came out positive! I didn...

ARCHIVED My Husband Just Doesn't Understand
kali-mist replied to kali-mist's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks for the helpfull tips. One great thing about this forum is that you know you are not the only one going through all this stuff and that really helps. I'm not sure if my hubby and roommate will go for some of these suggestions though. They are of the mind that since I'm the one with the problem I'm the one who should make all the changes and nothing... -
My husband is really starting to piss me off. He just doesn't seem to understand how hard the gluten free diet is when he is basically working against me. He keeps making sandwiches all over the place and not wiping up after himself. He says since I'm the one with the problem I should just wipe down every surface before I use it. I've told him that the...

ARCHIVED Help! New And Need Advice
kali-mist replied to kali-mist's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
When you were orginally being tested for Celiac, what kinds of tests did they do? I have been reading about all these tests like a malabsorbtion test and a gene test and some others that I never did. All I had was an endoscopy and a blood test. Does anyone know what tests are necessary and what tests aren't? -
ARCHIVED Help! New And Need Advice
kali-mist posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Hello all, I was diagnosed with Celiac in March 2007. I am doing my best with the gluten-free diet, but if it wasn't for this site I wouldn't know what do to. The doctor that diagnosed me didn't really give me any information on what Celiac was, he just told me I had it. The nutrionist I saw was very little help as she knew less than I did. What I... -
Hello all, I'm Canadian, born in Thunder Bay but moved to Edmonton a couple of years ago. I was diagnosed with Celiac in March 2007 and am still learning and finding out new things all the time. I would love to know of some "safe" restaurants in Edmonton as I tend to get lazy and like to go out to eat. I'm kinda shy and when I do go out to eat I don...

ARCHIVED Beers Other Than Redbridge?
kali-mist replied to Bread Belly's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
A couple days ago a friend of my roommates was over drinking some beers and I mentioned how I'm celiac and can't drink beer. He said he has a good friend how is also celiac and that he drinks Budweiser because it is made of rice. Now I'm pretty sure that it is not safe but apparently this guy gets pretty sick if he has any gluten but he can drink a case... -
ARCHIVED Alberta Restaurants
kali-mist replied to Carriefaith's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I live in Edmonton and I eat at Wendy's almost everyday for lunch since it's just down the street from where I work. I eat chili, fries, baked potatoes, and salads (sesame dressing has soy sauce therefore wheat so stay away). Supposedly the burgers (without bun) are ok too but I'm too shy to ask for it without the bun so haven't tried yet. Outback... -
ARCHIVED Canadians - Watch Out For Kelsys
kali-mist replied to Lisa B's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I'm originally from TBay!! I currently live in Edmonton but am thinking of moving back to be close to family. One thing that has kept me from moving is that Thunder Bay (being a smaller city than Edmonton) will have less people that know about Celiac. Do you have any problems finding gluten-free foods or restaurants that you can eat in? -
I was diagnosed with Celiac in March and I never even knew that there was a tax credit! It sounds like way too much work and hassle though so I won't be doing it. I usually just eat meat, fish, veggies and fruits anyway. I never liked bread/pasta/pizza/bagels/cakes/cookies to begin with (probably because it made me sick) so I don't spend a lot of money...

It's good to know that I'm not crazy and it's probably due to Celiac that I was so depressed and b%$@#y all the time. My roommate actually noticed a difference in my moods when I started going gluten-free. He said I was a lot easier to be around and everytime I mention cheating and eating a burger or something he reminds me how much nicer I am now. I always...

ARCHIVED Medications
kali-mist replied to kali-mist's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thank you so much, I will print this list and keep it handy. One thing I noticed that is not on the list is Epinephrine. I once had a severe allergic reaction and now I have to carry an EpiPen with me wherever I go in case it happens again. Does anyone know if they are safe? I think if I actually had to take it (which hasn't happened yet) I would because... -

ARCHIVED Medications
kali-mist posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've recently been catching a lot of flu bugs. I've been sick with flu like symptoms 3 times in 3 weeks. I don't usually like to take medicine when I'm sick, but I can't afford to miss anymore time from work and I need to take something to help me get through the day. I was taking Benylin but when I read the ingredients it said "starch" so I stopped taking... -
ARCHIVED Is Irish Bailey's gluten-free?
kali-mist replied to tabdegner's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
That list with all the gluten-free drinks is very helpful, however it doesn't list if Tequilla Rose or Baja Rosa are gluten free. Does anyone know? I always get Tequilla Rose as a shot when I go to the bar so I hope it's gluten-free. -
ARCHIVED "safe" Restaurant Picks
kali-mist replied to sallyterpsichore's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I am probably one of the worst Celiacs when it comes to eating out. I keep saying I'm not going to eat out for awhile because it is so dangerous but I do anyway. I am way too nervous about being "a pain in the butt" to mention to the waiter/waitress that I have Celiac and therefore have special needs. Like others, I just try and order stuff that should... -
I live in Canada so it would be different here. I would have to go on EI (Employment Insurance) and take a sick leave. You can only take a maximum of 15 weeks and you only receive 55% of your wage, which is not enough for me to pay the bills. Mostly work is not a problem for me, I just don't appreciate when I'm sick and I get the third degree on why I...
