I'm fairly new to the Portland area. I actually grew up in the suburbs and am now living in Wilsonville. I was diagnosed with celiac two years ago while living in Chicago. I saw some great doctors at Northwestern's Center for Integrative Medicine and the University of Chicago's Celiac Disease Center within the first few months I was diagnosed (had the blood...

ARCHIVED Totally Confused About Alcohol - Please Help!
pellegrino posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I've had celiac for two years now. I was never a big drinker before, and still am not. But because I don't drink often, I'm still pretty confused about alcohol in general. I'm finding lots of conflicting and confusing info online and on this message board and would love some help. What I'd really like and can't seem to find is a list of alcohol I CAN'T have... -
I just realized the Bumble and Bumble Thickening shampoo I've been using for at least the last nine months might have wheat in it. The ingredients on the bottle don't mention wheat. But I thought I'd check the website. The ingredients on the bottle are as follows. Water (Aqua), Sodium Laureth Sulfate, Lauramidopropyl Betaine, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice...

ARCHIVED New Chapter Vitamin With Barley Grass
pellegrino replied to pellegrino's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks everyone, I'm glad I went with my gut and didn't get them. Do you have any other vitamin brand recommendations? Specifically a Vitamin D/Calcium combo? I really like the New Chapter idea of whole food vitamins, as the Freeda vitamins didn't seem to work for me. But I'm not sure if there are any other celiac-friendly, for-sure-gluten-free whole food... -
ARCHIVED New Chapter Vitamin With Barley Grass
pellegrino posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
A doctor I saw at an urgent care center (a newly converted vegan doctor, mind you - gotta love Oregon) recommended New Chapter vitamins. I had been taking Freeda vitamins (a multi, Vitamin D, and Calcium) but realized something in them was making me itch. I noticed I'd get itchy welts periodically, but couldn't seem to connect their occurrence to foods or... -
ARCHIVED Cold Case Character Has Celiac
pellegrino replied to www's topic in Publications & Publicity
Hah, I saw this too. And laughed. It was just so random. And surprising. But I was glad I caught it, considering I don't usually watch Cold Case. I had a feeling someone on these boards would mention it though. You're right www, while the allergy reference is incorrect, any mention of celiac on TV is probably a good one. Momma Goose, you were watching... -
I'm 26, was recently diagnosed with celiac disease, and have insurance coverage through my employer. But, someday I would like to start my own business, at which time I imagine I would have to purchase private health insurance. I was talking with a friend of mine about this and she asked if celiac disease is a pre-existing condition. I found two threads...

ARCHIVED I Read Something On Balsamic Vinegar
pellegrino replied to BRUMI1968's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I know this is an old thread, but I thought I'd reply instead of starting a new one. Anything new about balsamic vinegar since this thread began? I'm new to the whole gluten-free diet - well, three months new to it. I thought I read that balsamic vinegar was always gluten free. I had some salmon last night that my roommate made, and got really sick to... -
ARCHIVED Heavy Metal Toxicity Testing, Food Intolerance/allergy Symptoms
pellegrino posted a topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
I just came across the thread below "omg...I might be on to something." From what I can gather from skimming through the 1,500+ posts, the woman who originated the thread by suggesting she might have a corn allergy was ultimately diagnosed with heavy metal toxicity, among other things. I'm wondering if this is something I should be tested for. If so,... -
ARCHIVED The Specific Carbohydrate Diet (scd)
pellegrino posted a topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Has anyone had success on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet? After I was diagnosed with celiac disease about a month ago, my naturopath recommended it. I've read the book Breaking the Vicious Cycle. The diet is crazy restrictive, but I've already eliminated gluten, dairy, most grains, and most sugar, so I don't think it'd be too much different. I'm already... -
ARCHIVED Living Without And/or Gluten Free Living
pellegrino replied to pellegrino's topic in Publications & Publicity
Oh wow, I shop at Whole Foods a lot now. I checked for both of these magazines at Borders, but didn't find them. I never thought to check Whole Foods though, I'll do that next time I go. Thanks! -
ARCHIVED How Do You Explain Celiac To Others?
pellegrino replied to Walter S's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I too like the book Dangerous Grains and recommended it to my family members. I doubt they've read it yet, since I was just diagnosed, but I hope they do. I also read Celiac Disease: A Hidden Epidemic after I was diagnosed. I would recommend that more for the person WITH celiac. I think Dangerous Grains would be better for family members to read, because... -

ARCHIVED Living Without And/or Gluten Free Living
pellegrino posted a topic in Publications & Publicity
I was diagnosed with celiac disease a month ago and am thinking about subscribing to Living Without and/or Gluten Free Living magazine. Does anyone read these? Are there a lot of recipes included in them? Would you recommend one over the other? I had delayed food sensitivity testing done and am supposed to be avoiding quite a few foods. That and I... -
Has anyone noticed an improvement in acne on a gluten free, dairy free diet? I've always broken out, have used lots of topical products, and used to go on antibiotics every so often to clear up my acne. I was actually on Ampicilin for a couple months before my celiac symptoms began four months ago, and stopped taking them. I've been gluten and dairy...

ARCHIVED Gluten Free, Dairy Free Meatloaf Recipe?
pellegrino posted a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Does anyone have a recipe for gluten free, dairy free turkey meatloaf? If it complies with the Specific Carbohydrate Diet that'd be even better, since I'll soon be starting that. I've Googled and can't find anything. One of my college roommates used to make the best turkey meatloaf and I've been craving it lately. But if I remember correctly, meatloaf... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free/organic Lip Gloss?
pellegrino posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I was just diagnosed with celiac disease and have read that lipstick and lip gloss can contain gluten. I rarely wear lipstick, but wear gloss every day. What's the best way to find out if the products I usually use are gluten free? Do companies usually answer emails or do I need to call? Calling is a bit difficult during the day while I'm at work, so... -
ARCHIVED Still Having Pain On Lower Left Side
pellegrino posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I was officially diagnosed with celiac disease through a biopsy two weeks ago, and have been gluten free since. I'm actually feeling a lot better - less bloating, less gas, less nausea. My doctor also has me on an anti-inflammatory diet for the first month (no dairy, sugar, caffeine, alcohol, etc.) and I've been taking fish oil. But I'm still having this... -
ARCHIVED Vulvodynia And Celiac Disease
pellegrino replied to pellegrino's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Wow, thanks for all the responses. Sounds like some with vulvodynia or vestibulitis improve on the gluten free diet, and some don't. I guess I'll just have to wait and see. Mine isn't so bad that I can't wear jeans, although it was before I went through physical therapy. And it's not really something that prevents me from sitting for long periods of time... -
Has anyone noticed a connection between vulvodynia and celiac disease? I was diagnosed with vulvodynia two years ago. My gynecologist, who specializes in vulvodynia, sent me to physical therapy, which I did once a week for six months - it helped a great deal. My physical therapist suggested going off birth control, and the imipramine I was taking for...
