P.S. your right this board is addictive!

I sent you a PM. Hope you get it.

I just want to say I really admire your strenght. You , your hubby, and his brother have been through so much, I think that it is really wonderful what you want to do for them. My thoughts are with you and your family.

I am not training for a marathon right now. However, I excercise and weight train. My DH is a strenght coach for football. I have been gluten-free for a few mths now. That first 3 weeks , all time energy low, very hard to excercise. I felt like my body was in shock! Give it some time... your energy will soon be at a all time high! I don't see why your injuries could not be linked... give yourself time heal. Good luck... hope you feel better soon!

non celiac gluten intolerance (like any food) is often referred to as a "delayed allergy" ... it is not a classic allergy (IgE mediated), but the intolerance. Mainstream labs test for IgG/delayed allergy/food intolerance testing, including Quest labs.
An intolerance will not show up in traditional IgE allergy testing. It can show up in IgG delayed food allergy testing.

"Delayed Food Allergies/Sensitivities
This type of allergy, often called 'food sensitivities', does not involve IgE antibodies and the release of histamine which cause very obvious symptoms soon after the ingestion of a food. Instead they are the result of IgG antibodies becoming sensitized to certain foods. IgG antibodies don't cause the release of histamine but they do release other immune chemicals designed to inactivate or destroy invaders in the body. These chemicals can cause damage and resulting inflammation to your own body tissues in the process. As a result, they too can cause symptoms, especially if you develop sensitivities to a number of different foods. Symptoms from food sensitivities may appear up to 3 days after the offending food was ingested and last for weeks afterwards. Symptoms are wide ranging and can affect multiple body systems."
Very interesting website ... learning a lot. My DD has bloating, cramps, D along with contipation (sooooooooo many pooping issues), skin rashes (they NEVER know what causes it, all these come and go... have a hard time pinpointing foods. BUT I can say this since I have been cooking gluten-free she is sooooo much better. So IgG delayed testing is what I should ask to be done?

Its hard to really tell, "normal" preg things ,can be masking other non preg things. BUT it is a very common thing to get when you are preg esp with each preg things are more intence. I had the same thing when preg with both my kids ... however I had it before too but more mild to moderate. And this was pre celiac diag. Heat would always help me ... I would put the heating pad on low (even on my hands...prob sounds crazy...but it helped). The book WHat to do when your expecting offers some advice on what you can do too.

Gluten intolerance is NOT an allergy, and therefore gluten will never show up in allergy testing. Allergy testing is completely useless to determine gluten intolerance.
Thank you, my DH and I are STRONGLY thinking about 100% gluten-free for our DD. I am also going to have my DH tested for celiacs since he has a family history too.
-
Actually, the antigliadin IgA or IgG can indicate gluten sensitivity (delayed allergy, intolerance). IgG food allergy/intolerance testing is done by many companies, not just enterolab, and can be done via bloodwork also, and for multiple foods.
See she also had the food allery test done and did not show any allergies but it did show she had a high allergen level/ count?
-
I just wanted to add my DH also has celiacs in his family too. So my DD has it on both sides.

Thanks for sharing...gonna get some!

Gluten-free!

The celiac disease tests are extremely unreliable in kids under six, and yield many false negatives. If you have suspected celiac disease, she probably has it. In which case a gluten light diet will keep damaging her bowels until she gets really sick at some point. It would be much better if you just put her on a 100% gluten-free diet, in order to avoid that from happening. You might be surprised how much better she will be when being completely gluten-free, in comparison the being gluten light.
I thought they were inreliable. Had no idea that they were until age six. Is there a such thing as Gluten senceitive?

I have celiacs. Runs in my Family. My DD just turned 3 has had many symptoms. Ped sent us to see a GI doc they ran the full pannel...they said came back negitive. However she had a elevated allergen count? Not sure what that means. Anway, was at the Doc with her today for her 3year check-up. DD is on a Gluten light diet because I find it easier to cook gluten-free for all of us (started that after the pannel was done). In the past 5weeks she has been doing great. Her doc thinks just keep her on the gluten light diet for now... if symptoms reappear then go gluten-free. Would like some advice... the only gluten she gets right now is at pre-school snack time. Do I stay gluten-light or go Gluten-free?

Very interesting, I have too always had low BP.

My scalp and neck always have bumps, and I never knew why! I am using Bath and Body works aromatherapy right now, I didn't see any obvious signs of gluten in the ingredients, but my body wash said wheat protein, so I'm not using it anymore. I'm still looking for a natural brand, like Avalon or Burt's Bees, anyone use any natural gluten free products? Where could I find a list of ingredients that identify gluten, like the not so obvious ones?
Thanks again for all the suggestions, I'm learning more each day through this website. It is so helpful!
mine did too. I have noticed that many of my B&BW stuff had oats in it ...which would be contaminated with wheat , for me it trigers skin problems. Like the red bumbs. So I would check for oats

I recentely posted in another board because my son is suspected of having celiac disease. We are waiting for his endoscopy to be scheduled, but I am convinced that he might have it because of his symptoms. He was born with heart and spine defects, and has been labeled as "failure to thrive". We never knew what caused his many problems, but now I am supsecting that I might have celiac as well.
I had bloodwork done yesterday, but they only did one test that I could tell, even after asking for a full panel. I have hypothyroidism and am lactose intolerant, I also suffered a miscarriage this past February. Well now I am pregnant again. We were trying to conceive and after trying, DS got sick and that's what began the journey to finding out about celiac. After testing this morning, I am now scared. If I have celiac what do I need to do?? I know I should change my diet, but because I am so new to this disease I have no idea what to do. I don't want to lose this baby or for the baby to go through what DS has gone through with his birth defects. I don't know if Celiac is our answer to all these problems, but I don't want to wait and risk this baby's health. So I've decided that I need to make changes to be on the safe side.
Please, anyone who has been through pregnancy with celiacs, can you tell me what I need to be doing? What are some good resources on celiac and pregnancy. And if my test comes back negative, should I pursue further testing, or just stay gluten free during the pregnancy no matter what?? And how do you find out if your prenatal has gluten? I've been taking New Chapter Organics Perfect Prenatal whole food vitamin, does anyone know if that's safe?
I have celiacs , been gluten-free since this summer- diag a mth ago with DH. I have a 3 year old (DD) and a 10mth old(DS). I was sick with celiacs (did not knowit) with my first had MANY prego complications. Thought it might be celiacs was not sure , did not go gluten-free (long story, was following my GI doc advice). We were having trouble getting and staying pregnant. While being pregnant with my DS I had MANY MANY complications he was not thriving and had to be delivered early.
Just today before I saw your post, I had just told my DH that if I could do my last prego over I would have listened to my gut and went gluten-free. My doctor and I believe that why I had so many problems. Best wishes to you and your lil ones. I just want to add don't stress... your lil one will get what they need!

Surely it will get better from here......
To sum up-
Lucas has been glutened twice since school started (1st grade,) missing three days of school combined.
Ezra immediately caught a bug upon entering preschool. I know this is common, but I hoped he'd already built up resistances from being exposed to his brother, who's been in school for two years. The bug developed into a bad sinus infection with a nasty cough. There's been several nights where he's coughed so hard, he chokes on it, and then vomits what looks like a 1/2 gallon of mucous.
He'd missed a couple days of school last week before we realized it was a sinus infection. Friday of last week I took him to the doctor, and she put him on Emycin (erythromycin) for 10 days. He went to school Monday and Tuesday, as he seemed to be getting better, but then he started vomitting the mucous again, two days of ickyness... So I took him back to the doc today.
While we were in the waiting room, I was trying to keep him entertained, tickling, smooching, etc... I pull up his t-shirt and see that he has broken out in tiny red bumps all over his torso....
...Ohhhh, crap.
So, obviously I show the doctor, and she's like, Oh God, it's another drug reaction. But his sinus infection is cleared up, it's just clear mucous drainage that's causing the cough to linger. So she writes out a script for prednisone and tells me to give him Benedryl for the next 24 hours or so, both for the allergic reaction.
The "another drug reaction" refers to the incident last winter when we found out that he's allergic to Amoxacillin. We ended up in the ER on Christmas night with my poor 3-year-old covered head to toe in hives that were so numerous, that it turned into those big hive-plaques; he had more hives than clear skin.
So at least the reaction today was caught instantly, and prevented from getting worse. I didn't think to ask her at the time, but... She did say that it's going to start getting difficult now, his number of tolerable antibiotics is shrinking. So I'm taking this to mean that he's allergic to all cillins and mycins? If you react to one, is it likely that you react to the whole family? I wish I'd asked, but I just didn't think of it at the time. I'll probably call Monday and ask.
I'm starting to think I should maybe get him a medical bracelet... It wouldn't have occured to me, if it hadn't been for the recent discussions here about them. Obviously, if something happens where somebody thinks he needs immediate antibiotics, if I'm not there, that would be really bad. Sure, it would be a long chance that that would happen, but you never know... So that's my update!
-Sarah
My DD is allergic to ALL cillins and mycins too! Last winter we had two horrific reactions to them. That ended her up in the er a few times. And caused all sorts of (for a few mths) side effects esp after the 2nd reaction. My pharm said they are like "kissing cousins." so, it makes since to be allergic to them all. But I am not sure how common it is. I do know that b/c of the allergy if she ever has a UTI infection she would have to be hospitalized.... scary. Hope your lil one starts to feel better.

I am so excited to hear the great news! Enjoy college gluten-free style! =)

I do know that flavored coffee you need to question.
what brand & flavor do you drink?

I don't know if this info will help you at all...but my docotros have a book with meds in it that list the ingrediants too... might be a lot of reading ... ask a nurse to read them to you over the phone?.

I feel for you and your little guy! I hope you get some answers soon. Good for you standing firm and letting your voice be heard! Best wishes.
I have been dealing with my DD doctors ever since I was diag w/ celiacs. I know first hand how frustrating it can be. I found wonderful support here.

Yeah!!!
I have been gluten-free for a few mths now, took a lil over a mth to sink too.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your loved ones.

What Can We Do To Hurry Along A Labeling Law?!(i'm In The Us)
in Coping with Celiac Disease
Posted
I am sick of hidden gluten too! but I agree with everything being said about the new law. I feel it may complicate things more! There needs to be a way of marking things ... so we know as consumers what we are eating. I feel that with the new law the corperations will always be trying to cover their behinds and confuse us even more.
