Hi
There is a Carrabas in the Boardman area that is very good. The Raisin Rack in Canton area.
No Whole Foods! In the CLeveland area there is some good eating places & gluten-free shopping. If you google Mike Eberhart & get on his blog , he is a friend from Cleveland. He also is a gluten-free publisher of a great cookbook..Gourmet Desserts.
He can give you a heads up on the Cleveland area.
In the Pgh area we have a WHole Foods, Trader Joe's East End Coop all selling gluten-free plus many more health stores. Sunnybridge in McMurray Pa. Loribakes in McDonald. Pa she has a cafe & bakery all wonderful goodies.......Gluttenny in Squirrel Hill area of Pgh. ( bakery) Health HUt in Beaver Pa.
Kathy's Creations is a bakery in Alliance Oh.... Tommy's pizza in Strongsville Oh. There is an Italian place ( forget the name) near Kathy's creations Oh I think it is Pisanello's or something like that. None of us likes the gluten-free food there!I wouldn't go back.
I Sharon Pa htere is a excellent place to eat. Open Original Shared Link LOve it there.
Cindy's Health Food Store is in or around the Warren/Niles Oh area.
I'm an hour from Boardman but I'm the founder of a independant gluten-free group. We have a great group of people & I have people from the NY line coming to the meetings driving several hours to get here so please feel free to join us at our monthly meetings. If you are interested PM me & I can give you more info about the meetings.

Hello everyone! It's been awhile since I have been on. My husband got a new job and we moved from Dayton oh area , to Lisbon Oh (near youngstown & pittsburgh pa sorta). I was wondering if anyone was from the area and could give me some advice. I am trying to find places to shop and eatout at.
thanks
-
No but there is one near our home and I am dying to go there. I believe it is similiar to a Golden Corral, Ponderosa and Old Country Buffet from what I have found out.
It is probably not the safest place though.
Thanks. I know its prolly not the safest... our choices are limited where we are and its out with my DH grandparents ... they want to take our kids there... so we are going to give it a shot... keep you posted.

Do you change the recipe at all? Do you have to add more liquid, take away some of the flour?
This is acutally a very good tip. I used to make the pudding cookie recipe and it does add moisture and flavor.
you just add the pudding to the dry ingrediants. Infact just made myself a bday cake last week using gluten-free cake mix and mixed in pudding.... very yummy... my friends and family did not belive me it was gluten-free.

something that I have always done even before going gluten-free is adding a box of instant pudding to cakes, cornbread, coffee cake etc. makes a HUDGE difference. I mix the (gluten-free brand of course) pudding with the dry ingrediants. Helps add flavor , and keeps things from crumbling =)

I just fixed my own problem...lol.
in case anyone needs to know its under options...dunno why I did not see it five minutes ago..lol

I have not been on for about a week and noticed some things had changed. I was wondering... when I click on a topic only the original post shows and I have to click on each individual bullet to read the rest... is there a way to look at them all at once... thanks

So I have been gluten free for 3 months tomorrow, and I got really dizzy about 2 months into it, had my blood tested, had my hearing tested, (didn't have the vertigo test because I was too stressed out for it...I am sick of testing and my dizziness doesn't seem to be when I turn my head the wrong way).
Anyway, the blood work looked normal except my HDL Cholesterol was low, and my doctor said that could be a sign of malnutrition so to make sure I'm getting a lot of calories per day. I've been making myself eat even when I'm not hungry and eating a little bit more of a variety but I am still dizzy. It did improve to where I would only get dizzy once or twice a day but for the past 3 days it's been pretty constant.
Anyone have a similar experience or ideas of what else is going on?
The only other thing I can think of is anxiety, I do have high anxiety and take medication for it, and the strange thing is I feel like it's under control right now.
I was just at the doctors today because I have been dizzy too. Been gluten-free 4mths now. They said my BP was a lil high (never been high), when I was at another docs a mth ago it was low they said? I am going back for blood wrk.
hope you figure it all out and start to feel better.

I really liked the article and your post. Never hurts to try. I do know that they advise to slowly take a child off gluten (when its for autisim) so the child won't show signs of withdrawl.

Does Wal-Mart have a special section for gluten free or is the muffin mix with the other baking products?
At my wal-mart they were in with the reg baking mixes.

Sorry. You still have to use what the directions call for...I just added in stuff. So that would be 6tbl butter, 2 eggs , 1c milk.

Thank you to all 3 of you for your help. I didn't know maltodextrin wasn't wheat in the US. It is just on my "forbidden" list given to me by my doctor. I will call the manufacturer to be positive that it is okay to have. Thanks!
don't know, you may have read but, I really liked shelly Case's book the gluten-free diet for outline of the diet. It's up to date and I carry it around with my to know whats safe and not. She explained Maltodextrin

In the second week of my diet I went and cooked my DD kraft mac'n'cheese... yes I went and tasted it... I ALWAYS checked before out of habbit. Thats when I decided it was easier to cook gluten-free for everyone.
Hope you feel better

I have been seeing other post about Pumpkin recipes so I thought I would share mine too!
These are a Gluten Free version of Starbucks pumpkin muffins they have out this time of year. SO I made my own... very yummy!
One box gluten-free pantry muffin mix (got at wal-mart)
Pumpkin Pie spice (about 1 TBL)
Brown sugar ( 1/2 c)
Mix these dry ingrediants together, then follow the directions on the box.
Then, add in about 8oz pumpkin puree.
In a sepreate bowl, mix one container cream cheese, powder sugar (1/4 to 1/2c), Pure Vanillia (1tsp), set aside.
Fill muffin cups/tin with pumpkin mixture then add a nice size spoon-full of cream cheese mixture ( I pushed it down in a bit). Sprinkle with wallnuts (if you want). Bake at 350 for 16 min.
My family and neighbors said they are good enough to sell..lol!
They taste better the next day!
Happy eating!

Just rambling here. I know of no place that demands 00.00 to be gluten-free, and testing for that would be impossible anyway. I know you can test down to at least 3 parts per million and maybe a little less but it will NEVER be zero. And the reality is that we have NO standard right now. I can't imagine we'll get better than 20, and most experts agree that's well below the threshold that will affect most people with celiac.
I've been gluten-free for right at 6 years now -- in fact that anniversary will be coming up in about a week -- and to those of you who have just started in the past year or two, you can't imagine how much easier it is now. The allergen law isn't perfect, but it's so much better than before. And I think the gluten standard will improve things, as well.
This is the group that pushed for and got the allergen law. This is probably where your comments should go.

I know you aren't supposed to eat lunch meats during pregnancy unless you heat them up (ew!) but what about beef jerky? I just got a package of Welshire Farms turkey snack sticks which i love, ate three, googled beef jerky and pregnancy and saw a few things that said it's a no no. I have a drs. appointment on Monday but just thought I'd see if anyone here knew the answer before that so i can keep eating it over the weekend. Beef jerky and pickles are sooooo delicious
I was told it was safe.

ok totally off subject but we can have tobasco sauce??!! oh please say it is true! i havent had any in like 6 months because i wasnt sure or not....

Yes. As always check the lable 1st.

well i feel alot better knowing other pregnant people have had the same problem. its hard to tell whats a celiac disease thing lately and whats a preggo thing lol. i see my doc on mon so i will ask him about what excersices i can do that might help. i also bought a plug in heating pad and that helped at night last night.
i think i was freaked out because when i get glutened it makes my joints get real stiff and hurt. so i was worried because i was sure i havent messed up on my diet but it still felt like i was "cheating" on it!
Glad to hear you had some relife last night. I am too always thinking "is thins normal or is it celiacs". My joints ake too after being glutened.
-
I have been thinking about this ... once we figure out who we need to contact... we should figure out what we would like for the law to included ... something that will suite celiacs not just the companies. If we are clear and concise and have a united requet, I believe we have a better chance at change!

Yes so addictive I leave it open and minimized at work and sneak in replies
I hear ya! As soon as my kids are a sleep I am back on for a few...lol

I am sorry that you where glutend. When I have been glutend it takes a few hours to set in. I always feel bad insiting on reading the lables , esp since ppl are just trying to be nice, but can't be too careful. Hope you feel better soon.
