Positive / negative
Scott Adams replied to Rick Williams's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Has your doctor helped you understand your results? Did they recommend a biopsy or gluten-free diet. Given your family history it seems like they should be able to diagnose you with blood tests also, but they may want to do a biopsy as well. -

Yes, the manager defended his staff by telling me that cooking my GF pasta in a separate pot using fresh water would have cause an unacceptable delay in my serving time, probably at least 15 minutes, which is "not acceptable for the Olive Garden." Of course I chewed him out and told him that he should not be offering anything that is marked "gluten-free"...

Diagnosed?
Scott Adams replied to bobandlucy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
About a month ago I started taking Bifidobacterium Infantis supplements because of the studies I've seen on them. I haven't had any serious symptoms, but just some minor gut discomfort that seemed to be increasing lately. After about a month on them I do notice a positive difference, and the bloating feelings I was getting have gone away. Here are some articles... -
Diagnosed?
Scott Adams replied to bobandlucy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It definitely sounds like they were able to visually see damage consistent with celiac disease, and you should be 100% gluten-free now. I suspect it will take a bit of time to view the samples and issue the definitive diagnosis, but it sounds like you should heed their findings and give up gluten until you hear otherwise. Yes, I'm amazed that after decades... -
Is Surge soda Gluten-Free?
Scott Adams replied to Kid Vicious's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It looks like it is gluten-free, but may need to hurry: "Surge will be leaving shelves soon, so you may experience limited availability.": https://www.surge.com/surge.html/ -
are you going to take the vaccine
Scott Adams replied to DJFL77I's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Whether we like it or not I doubt that any of us would be able to get access and take this vaccine anytime during the next 90 days, which means that by the time we get it tens of millions of people will have likely been given the vaccine. On one had it's not great to have to wait and risk getting covid-19, on the other hand we should learn of all of its risks... -
Just beware about large chain restaurants, for example, the last time I ate at the Olive Garden (over 5 years ago now), they had added a gluten-free penne pasta option to their menu. I got sick from it and called and talked to the manager who said they still cooked it in the same boiling water as wheat pasta! I want to believe that this was a one time mistake...

If you haven't already done so, it's time to keep a detailed food diary, as you may have additional intolerance. Stop eating oats if you do eat them, and consider eliminating soy, eggs, dairy, and nightshades, etc., or at least rotate them--stop for a few weeks, then add them back and record what happens.

Technically speaking if you are diagnosed with DH you need to be gluten-free, so further testing may not be necessary. If you don't believe the diagnosis is a correct one, you may want to ask for more tests. I would recommend blood tests, but you had them and they were negative. If you were eating gluten daily for at least six weeks leading up to that test...

At the very least you would want a place that has a gluten-free menu, and then be able to talk with the wait staff and manager when you order. At least one of our moderators always recommends going to higher end restaurants, as they tend to take the time to listen to your special needs when you order. One of the sponsors of this site is GliadinX, which makes...

If you do I would go with certified gluten-free flours if possible. My main point is that consuming processed foods, especially milled flours, may increase the risk of getting small amounts of cross contamination. Since you started having symptoms again after going gluten-free, I just wanted to point out that shifting your diet to whole foods and cutting...

Sweet potatoes are a better option, as they are a complex carbohydrate and have lots of nutrition and fiber. One of the longest living populations on earth are on the island of Okinawa in Japan. They actually outlive those in the rest of Japan, who also have long live spans, but after comparing the diets of the regular Japanese vs. Okinawans they found that...

Mutiple biopsies
Scott Adams replied to El10's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Patients with celiac disease who ingest any wheat products develop abnormalities in the lining of the small intestine, particularly the upper part (jejunum). The latest protocol I've seen calls for at least 4 samples to be taken. -
Yes, I think you are right, the more processed foods you eat, which include lots of milled alternative flours that could get cross-contaminated, the higher your risk. The same with eating out...even at restaurants that have GF menus you're still likely to get some contamination, especially if you do it regularly.

are you going to take the vaccine

Wow @RMJ, a PhD in pharmacology! You've probably mentioned it before, and I seem aloof, but bravo, and why did I not know (or remember) this? -
are you going to take the vaccine
Scott Adams replied to DJFL77I's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yes, for sure. By the time my family and I have access I would guess that 100M people would have already been given it. I'm ready to go back to normal, and travel, eat out, etc.
