  1. Thanks so much everyone! I have indeed bought a lot of food b/c I was worried I wouldn't be able to find any. I think I'll bring it and then this summer check out all the places so I know for next year. I definetly will check out the resturants too. OH and I actually think I've been to Blue Moon Cafe, LOL!! My brother lives about a mile or two from the...
  2. Thanks so much!! I have a food lion right here so I'll go check it out and see what they carry. Thanks so much! Thanks for the dining options too. We don't normally go out to eat b/c it's so hard but maybe we'll try! Linda
  3. OBX mom, I see your screen name but I know that I can't post JUST to you so I made this post, LOL!! We live in VA and my brother is in OBX (Manteo) we go down for a month or so every summer. I was wondering what stores down there you get your gluten-free food from? Our Harris Teeter up here doesn't carry much - does the one down there? How is Food Lion...
  4. Hey everyone! My daughter is 2 and has Celiac. She has the HLA-DQ2 gene for it as well. I've never been tested but lately, b/c of her I've been eating a lot less gluten. gluten-free pasta, lasanga, corn tortilla's, cereals, etc. Recently (Ok, don't laugh) we went to a concert and I had 4-5 "White" beers (the unfiltered wheat kind). My system has...
  5. My daughter was sort of in the same boat. Here's what happened with her. When I was breastfeeding her she was projectile vomiting left and right, SO SKINNY. She was the scrawniest baby. They claimed she had reflux so I pumped her full of Zantac. Then I switched to formula. HUGE improvement. Then she started solids, immediate FTT, vomiting, diarrhea...
  6. Oh geez, you already got it. I'm not even sure I should share my experience. I HATE IUD's and will NEVER EVER get one again. Let me just say, be very, very aware of your body when you use it. If you ever get ONE even slightly positive pregnancy test with it get it out. I had an IUD and I was a few days late once, I took a HPT, it was very lightly...
  7. I was wondering how you all are? My DD has Celiac and she's (obviously) gluten-free. I bought Elisabeth Hasselbacks new book and it pointed out things like having a seperate toaster, not to use those plastic (or anything but metal) utensils when cooking, etc. Wow, I wasn't that strict and she seems fine! I DO pop her gluten-free waffle in the same toaster...
  8. Hi everyone! My youngest daughter has Celiac. She is HLA-DQ2 positive. They also think my middle daughter has it but she hasn't be tested yet (that's Monday). Recently I noticed a bald spot on my oldest daughter. (I have 3!) I took her to the dermatologist and she has Alopecia Acreta. I googled it and it said this too can be a sign of Celiac. Does...
  9. Thanks guys! She DID just accidentally get glutened last week. Diarrhea for 3 days straight and this behavior started right after it. I mean, she's always been like this to a degree but it's gotten HORRID this past week. So maybe it's an after effect? If not, I better get my Ergo carrier back out and brace myself for the terrible 2's. Yikes! ...
  10. Seriously, my 20 month old is driving me nuts. NUTS. All she wants to do is be held CONSTANTLY. It's insane. She stands at me and screeches. You name it, at home, in the car, store, if I"m not holding her she's miserable. Does this have anything to do with her Celiacs? Probably not since she's gluten free?? I was just curious! My other kids were...
  11. Thanks guys! I think what we'll do is go to Violet's GI for one more visit and see how we like him again and if not switch to U of MD. A question on the diagnosing though. My DD reacts SO violently to gluten that she cannot be on it and hasn't since she was 9 months old. She was losing weight, vomiting, diarrhea every hour - scary stuff for a baby!...
  12. We were in Disney World last week and I fed my daughter popcorn. That is THE ONLY thing she ate different and she had a terrible gluten reaction from it! Diarrhea that caused instant diaper rash for 3 days, not sleeping at night, etc. What on earth in popcorn could have caused this? Do you think they could have used old oil to pop it that they fried wheat...
  13. Mine isn't one discovery but I was VERY pleased by the grocery store Wegmans and their gluten free aisle! I bought SO MUCH food for Violet! Tons of stuff that didn't have rice in it too! Violet is allergic to rice and it seems like so much is made with primarily rice flour but Wegmans had a ton NOT with rice flour! If you have one near you I highly rcommend...
  14. Is Celiac something that requires frequent Dr. visits? Or is it something you get diagnosed with and now that we know we're free to go about life and don't have to go back every year for a check? Now that we know Violet has it, I'm guessing we all should get checked. We're in Virginia and I know University of Maryland is the big Celiacs research center...
  15. Honestly, no, if I don't have Celiacs I won't go gluten free all the time. I probably will a good deal of the time since my daughter has it, but if I go out to eat without her, etc, I wouldn't. However, if I have the gene I may consider it! Or I'd at least know I should get screened for it once a year or be on the lookout for symptoms, etc.
  16. Hi everyone! My daughter was recently diagnosed as having Celiacs. She also tests positive for the HLA-DQ2 gene. I asked my GP if I could be tested for Celiacs. She said no, that if I have no symptoms I was fine. She also said most cases are sporadic and NOT genetic. Hmm....the more I read about Celiacs the more this is totally false! No, I don't...
  17. Thanks guys! I see what your saying about congrats - after reading many posts on here it seems that Violet is in the minority having such clear concise results! You are right to be thankful for that. Not to be totally clueless but how do you KNOW if a lotion doesn't have gluten in it? Or shampoo, etc? I guess what I'm asking is what is the chemical...
  18. It's official that Violet has Celiacs. I don't know if you all remember me, she's the baby that's now 20 months old but had failure to thrive and has reacted so violently to gluten she got immediate vomiting and diarrhea. So we saw a GI Dr. and he said it would be too bad to put her on gluten just to get the biopsy and blood test, due to her failure to...
  19. Thanks so much for the information everyone! I'm REALLY confused as to why her GI Dr. said that she had to have both genes in order to have it. EVERYTHING I read both here and online says no, you only need one gene and DQ2 is the most common one by far. So what do I do if he says she does NOT have Celiacs when she has all the symptoms, FTT and is gene...
  20. What does this mean? (Our appt isn't for another month but I got these results over the phone) Hi everyone! My DD is 20 months old. She's been on a gluten free diet since 10 months old b/c of her extreme reactions to it. (Vomiting, diarrhea, etc) She also has FTT. So they did the genetic test since she can't have the regular test (it would be negative...
  21. Huh! that is really really interesting!! On one hand I can look at it and say YES it fits Violet! She has 2 older sisters so she was very sick as a tiny infant. (It was her oldest sisters first year in preschool when she was born so she brought EVERYTHING home). She had RSV twice as a tiny baby and since she's allergic to penecillian she had to take...
  22. Yes, my daughter has had antibioitics! Actually she's allergic to all penecillians - not anaphylactic, she gets this horrid red spotty rash all over her body. I'm so intrigued now - are the two related? I have NO clue if my DD is going to have the Celiacs gene or it's just a wheat allergy, but the more I read the more I wonder if it isn't Celiacs. Like...
  23. Just curious! A friend of mine with Celiacs said he was told up to 1/3 of people with it are also allergic to and/or intolerant of rice. My DD is very highly allergic to rice (immediate vomiting) but I had no idea it was so common. Honestly he seems to be the only other person like her that I've heard of. If it was so common why would all gluten-free...
  24. Ok, I just read more of that link and I don't necessarily get it!! My DD had a grade 5+ reaction (on the 1-5 scale) to wheat on the scratch test, but her symptoms are definetly NOT what they are describing (breathing, hives etc). So you can have a severe reaction on the test buthave your allergy symptoms look like an intolerance. But they're not an intolerance...
  25. I JUST asked Violet's GI Dr. this! He said what the link said. BUT, he also said that Violets reaction is a type 3 reaction (vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, failure to grow) meaning it's identical to a Celiacs reaction. So really, the treatment is the same. So it all depends on the TYPE of allergy you have to wheat if that makes sense. There are...
