  1. Tom- I wasn't able to reach my neice by phone, but she did email me this response. The doctor she works with primarily is a naturopath named Connie Hernandez, at Pacific Naturopathic. Unfortunately, she's a little farther north - in Palo Alto. But I do know my neice has been happy with her. The website is Open Original Shared Link. She didn't mention...
  2. This comment really encapsulated what I've been thinking this week, and it's brought me full circle: GFP, you've made me realize I've been way to cocky about this issue of risk-taking. I'm relatively new to this and was so happy with my initial improvement, I think I just got over-confident. I've been doing great, gotten my family on board, etc.--but also...

    ARCHIVED Sad

Hey Roxie, I couldn't agree more with what everyone else has said here. It's not a death sentence to have been diagnosed. It's just the opposite. You CAN do without the gluten, and once you get the hang of it, you're likely to find it's not limiting, it's liberating! You are going to feel so much better, you're going to feel happier, your family will...
  4. Hi Tom, My neice lives in San Jose, right next to Campbell, and she's been working with a naturopath and a more traditional doctor -- I think an endocrinologist -- very successfully. She's allergic to gluten, eggs, dairy, and probably other foods as well. I'll call her tomorrow (she's away today), find out their names for you, and will post again when...
  5. Thanks Yolo, I'll look into the homeopathic rescue remedy. There's a natural food store down the street from me that has a pretty good natural pharmacy that also carries various homeopathic remedies. It's a good thing to know about, assuming it doesn't have trace gluten, of course. Before I stopped eating gluten, I bought a multiple B vitamin with high...
  6. Well today for only the second time since going gluten free in early February, my neck is starting to throb. I am so bummed out and puzzled, because the first time it happened, I could clearly trace where and how I got glutened. This time, I haven't eaten anything at all different from the things I've been eating all week -- all of which I've been careful...
  7. Hi DanaC, The funny thing about making the connection between peripheral neuropathy and gluten is that, once I went gluten-free (after ruling out the first several things on the list of possible causes for peripheral neuropathy), not only did the constant numbness and frequent pain and "shocks" in my toes go away, but I realized that I had been suffering...
  8. Cyberprof, Sorry to hear about your hubby and how worried you feel. I don't have any information to offer about celiac and MGUS because I myself am a novice in this whole gluten-free world and I only found out about the studies about MGUS and gluten through something I read on this website this last week. However, if I learn anything more, I'll let you...
  9. Well, I agree with this suggestion. In fact, in reading this today and thinking about this stuff all month, I'm planning on writing a nice, direct letter to my family doctor, with a copy to each other doctor there, informing them about how I diagnosed my own gluten intolerance (don't know for sure if it's celiac disease, but it doesn't matter to me), the...
  10. Here's a link on the issue of gluten and irregular menstruation/infertility: Open Original Shared Link "Some of the other conditions associated with gluten allergy are irregular menstruation, infertility and miscarriage, as well as slow growth in infants and children." I see that someone else here has sent you more and better links. Good luck...
  11. I am self diagnosed and am very happy with the decision to go gluten-free. I am experiencing great relief from symptoms and do not find it difficult to stay strictly gluten-free. This forum and the articles on this website have made it pretty simple (list of good and bad ingredients, for example) -- after some initial difficulty and a few setbacks. Having...
  12. Well, I may be able to answer my own question here about whether 10 ppm of gluten from wheat is sufficient to call something "gluten free." While on this site I noticed an ad for Norwegian imported celiac-safe baking mixes, and when I clicked on it, I came to a page that said their ingredients have only 20 ppm of gluten, which they state meets European standards...
  13. Samantha, I'm no expert at this, having only started eating gluten-free myself about a month ago, and having no one to diagnose me but myself. Nevertheless, I just got such a strong feeling from reading what you wrote that you should trust your instincts, forget about what your doctor said, and start eating gluten-free again, right away! The reason why...
  14. Last month I was in Stockholm, just a week or two after I started eating gluten-free, and was amazed to find so many gluten-free products, clearly labeled and even set aside on a gluten-free shelf in a neighborhood supermarket. Among the great finds was a gluten free "knackebrod" (they're a kind of thick, crisp cracker similar to the Wasa crackers that we...
  15. What's the homeopathic Rescue Remedy?
  16. I know there are other places on this site that talk about fiber supplements, so today I went looking for one. After rejecting Metameucil powder (it's supposed to be fine, but it has yellow food dye which seems unnecessary so I don't want that), I read the label for BeneFil (I think that's the name). The label said: "Ingredient: wheat dextrin" and then...
  17. Thanks, Momma Goose. You graceful goslings are great!
  18. I don't know if what I have is DH but it sounds similar to what many people on this site report. I have only been gluten-free for about a month, and my other symptoms (mainly neurological) are much improved, but I'm still struggling with the rash. Mine are on my legs, arms, and occasionally my stomach. I started noticing about a year ago that I was getting...
  19. Thanks to everyone for your thoughtful responses. I guess I'm going to have to figure out what will happen to me the hard way--through experience. But I'm still so grateful that I have stopped my worst symptom, the neck pain, that I doubt I will ever intentionally "cheat" -- and I'll just have to try harder not to get accidentally zapped. Two questions...
  20. Yay! Thanks so much for the sources for gluten-free blue cheese. Now, does anyone know any gluten-free brands of blue cheese salad dressing? If not, does anyone have a good recipe for it? Thanks. Ellen
  21. I've just been dealing with this myself, because the first and most irritating thing that happens to me if I get glutened by mistake is I immediately get itchy bumps on my legs, arms, sometimes torso. I don't know for sure if it's wheat I'm getting though. I use old-fashioned Calamine Lotion on the bumps, which temporarily relieves the itching pretty well...
  22. Whatever you do, don't cheat at the party. It's really not worth it, and you'll definitely regret it afterward. The momentary comfort of eating what everyone else is eating doesn't compare with the days of discomfort you'll have if you don't stick with your diet. I agree with everyone else -- either ask if you can bring a dish (or two), or eat before you...
  23. Thanks for the feedback, Ursa Major. I guess you're right: I lived with pain for so many years and was just stoic about it, just lived with it and suffered. I never thought I'd ever have a day without the neck pain, much less a straight week. I'm probably just noticing symptoms more on the occasions when I accidentally get glutened. I'm sorry to hear...
  24. Don't know if it's DH but what you're describing is consistent with what I've experienced. For a long time, I had itchy bumps only on my legs, never anywhere else. Sometime during the year, I started getting them on my stomach, and occasionally my arm. But for the longest time, they were confined to my legs.
