  1. That's interesting, since canker sores are well-documented to be associated with Celiac Disease and is referenced by every reputable site I have looked at, including the Mayo Clinic: Open Original Shared Link LIS
  2. I had my endoscopy today and I wish I could say I'm happy about it, but I'm not. The nurse told me afterwards that the whole procedure took only five minutes from start to finish, where they normally take twenty to thirty. She said the doc was 'rushed today'. And instead of the eight biopsies the GI discussed with me beforehand, she only took two... one...
  3. Canker sores are one of the documented symptoms of Celiac. I get them all the time. I am currently being investigated for Celiac (biopsy on wednesday) and I am also undergoing testing for primary immune deficiency disease, because of my chronic infections (ears, sinuses, throat, etc).
  4. It will be more accurate than a 'vega machine'. LIS
  5. Hi all, Just wanted to report that I had an excellent visit with the gastroenterologist today. She was extremely thorough in going over my medical history, she reviewed with me all of the blood work my PCP has ordered so far, and then we discussed my current symptoms in detail. She made quite a few notes, listened attentively, and seemed especially...
  6. Hi all, My PCP ordered a quantitative immunoglobulin panel for me last week. My IgA, IgG, and IgM levels are all normal, which supports the negative Celiac blood work I recieved. Nevertheless, I'm keeping my appointment with the gastroenterologist on thursday. Celiac or not I still have chronic GI issues that need investigated and an endoscopy is probably...
  7. Thanks for the replies! I took some time to research Total IgA this evening and understand now exactly what you have been talking about. In fact, it seems to me that my results are pretty much worthless without knowing whether I am IgA deficient or not. Given that Celiac patients are more likely than the general population to be IgA deficient, I wonder...
  8. Hi, I got my Celiac labs back today and they were all negative. However I do have an appointment scheduled with a gastroenterologist next thursday and I have authorization to proceed with an endoscopy if I should want one. It seems prudent to go ahead and have this done, since my symptoms are highly suggestive of Celiac and there may well be something...
  9. That's nice of you to say, mslee. Unfortunately it just is what it is. We all know people who abuse the system and get benefits where they are not needed, and we all know people who desperately need help but can't get any whatsoever. My friend Tommy worked hard his whole life, paid his taxes like the rest of us, and died waiting for a heart transplant...
  10. Congratulations, cat! It sounds so odd... congratulating someone for having Celiac... but I think everyone knows what I mean. It must be a HUGE relief to finally have an answer to what's been ailing you. I hope that your road to recovery is swift and that you find ever-improving health with your new diet. LIS
  11. It's such a wishy-washy process. A friend of mine who has a rare congenital heart disorder (same as I have) was turned down repeatedly, year after year, while his health continued to decline. He ended up dying last year in a hospice, unable to feed or bathe himself, yet SSI told him right up until the end that he could get a desk job. It was heartbreaking...
  12. About how long does it take to get Celiac blood work back? From what I understand they are not done locally and must be shipped off to another lab. Am I looking at a couple days? Weeks? Just wanna know how impatient to get.
  13. Just to be certain... I should NOT go on a gluten-free diet after my lab work tomorrow... just in case my doc wants to order additional tests? This is so hard! I want to go gluten-free right now so bad, and it kills me to stay on a heavy gluten diet just for these tests!
  14. Thanks cat, that's always good to hear.
  15. Hi Shay and thanks so much for your input! Like I said, this guy was a real prince with me today. When he handed me the lab sheet he said 'let's see how these come out, and in the meantime do some research and if there's anything else you'd like me to order for you we'll discuss it at our next meeting'. So he is VERY open to me requesting additional...
  16. Hi all, I stopped by my doctor's office today to pick up my lab orders for the hospital tomorrow. I gotta tell you this guy is a sweetheart as doctors go. Younger guy, seems to be up on his research, spent a lot of time listening to me, and gave me a very thorough hands-on exam. It looks like he just ordered three Celiac tests for me, but there's a...
  17. You know what boggles my mind more than anything, Shay? I've had three different primary care physicians over the past 5 years, none of whom ever mentioned the possibility of Celiac, or any autoimmune disease for that matter. Chronic fatigue, lifelong diarrhea, vitamin deficiency, recurring infections, obvious malnutrition despite eating healthy, strange...
  18. Now that's very interesting to hear, Shay. As it so happens, my Vitamin D and B12 are severely deficient (as measured by blood test last spring), and my doc says I'm starting to show signs of Hashimoto's, which runs in my family. The more I read on this board, the more it seems certain that I am Celiac. LIS
  19. Sue, That's very good information to have. I did not know that they could do that! Also, I can tolerate sedatives very well... I've been given them prior to MRI's and such. I assumed that for an endoscopy though, you were given general anesthesia by IV, which is what I need to avoid. LIS
  20. Nice post Nora, It just makes so much sense to me that autoimmune diseases like Celiac are so much more prevalant now. Not only is grain fairly new to us in our evolution (relatively speaking), but in the last 100 years cereal grains have exploded globally. We use them as filler in everything. Perhaps we've simply reached critical mass and these genes...
  21. I find the 'grieving for food' thing a little strange too, but I guess it's all a matter of perspective. Personally, I've lost far more important things in life than croissants and pizza. Getting my health back and actually enjoying the rest of my life rather than dreading it, would be nothing short of a miracle for me. Grief? Grief is when you can barely...
  22. Thanks everyone. Mother of Jibril, I'm real sorry to hear about your mom's health and your recent troubles as well. Sounds like the gluten-free diet is working well and I wish you continued good health! ShayFL, I know exactly what you mean. I never thought I'd be hoping to be diagnosed with anything, but finding out I have Celiac would be a blessing...
  23. Been thinking a lot about my dad lately. When I was 12 years old, he would have been 45, the same age that I am now. The man was constantly sick and fatigued, caught every virus that came within twenty miles of him. Always down, always tired. He was never able to do the same things that other dads his age were able to do with their kids. He was never...
  24. Thanks for the advice, I guess I'll let the chips fall where they may for now. If my disability insurance depends upon getting a biopsy then by all means I will have it, but I'll certainly make a case for my safety as well. I do realize that with Celiac I will become better with a gluten-free diet, and perhaps fairly quickly as well. However my disability...
