  1. Thanks for the quick response Dave! I guess I should clarify. It sounded like he would do the test if I really wanted, I just didn't know what it would tell me since we have just made a change. If it did show gluten, I would have assumed it could still be from using the teflon pans, and since we have already changed, I wouldn't know if she was getting...
  2. Hi, my daughter was diagnosed with celiac disease in March and has been gluten-free since. The results have been remarkable! Due to moving this summer, we were just able to have her first "check up" with a Ped GI specialist on the 3rd. He told me he doesn't regularly do blood tests on patients and since she is growing so well and he said we were being...
  3. My SIL uses Melaluca (sp) vitamins. They say gluten free and she doesn't use any artificial sweeteners, so I am positive they don't include it either. Let me know if you need me to get more info from her. I also just looked at the Vita worms we are using, and it looks like they don't have any artificial sweeteners either. Plenty of real sugar though!...
  4. Lil Critters Vita Worms are gluten-free, it even says so on the bottle. They taste like gummi worms, so they are easy to get my dd to take them! Centrum vitamins are gluten-free too, the Rugrat ones is what we have used before.
  5. Match heads, I had never heard that one. I had heard about Pica, but I always thought it was wanting to eat dirt or clay. Once Ashlee was diagnosed I made the link to the paper, I think it had to be connected. I figure I will know a bit more about when this all started when she eventually evens out on the growth curve. If she gets back to the 50th percentile...
  6. Looking back, we could see quite a few signs our dd showed that we had missed. Then she got diarrhea that didn't go away. She lost weight and got incredibly lethargic. She was diagnosed a little over a month from when the constant diarrhea started. She never ate dirt, but she did like to lick paper. I would catch her hiding behind something licking the...
  7. Are there any actual studies about the Teflon retaining gluten that anyone knows about? I just don't understand how it would retain gluten. Can anyone explain?
  8. Hmmm, that does sound hard. Ashlee was older and so even when she didn't want to drink the pediasure, I could communicate more and make her understand she just had to take a sip. She has also always been a very compliant child. Rest assured, my son is making up for that! Anyway, bribing children to eat is generally not the way to go, but in this...
  9. Hi, my daughter was diagnosed with celiac disease in March and since then we have moved from Oregon to Texas. I was finally able to find a Ped GI and get an appointment scheduled for her with Dr. Anderson at the Children's Medical Center in Dallas. Has anyone been there or specifically seen Dr. Anderson? This will be the first follow up appointment we...
  10. I am so glad you were able to find out what is wrong and now can eliminate gluten! It sounds like you are on the right track! If you are going to see Danna Korn, I assume you have already read her book! That helped me a lot. I also use the Incredible, Edible, Gluten free cookbook for kids a lot. The good news is that even though this is all overwhelming...
  11. I don't know if I can be of too much help, but I can try anyway! First of all, congratulations on your son's improved health! Have you tried any Pediasure? It would be a "band aid" but would help him get the nutrition for now while you work on expanding his diet. My dd loved it at first, but then went through a stage where she didn't want it. I just...
  12. Hi, we are currently getting some assistance with food stamps as my dh is a new teacher and I stay home with our kids. Money is VERY tight, so I do all I can to save. We eat mainly gluten-free meals, and make substitutes for my daughter when needed. I have found that making her bread and crackers and pancakes from scratch really saves us a lot. I couldn...
  13. While you are preparing information, I know there are sites that give the norm of what a child should grow each year. Since lack of growth was my daughter's first symptom, I learned a lot about it! I think it was a growth hormone deficiency site that I contacted that really had a lot of information about that. It might help prove that just because you...
  14. If there is one thing I have learned through my daughter's diagnosis, it is that doctors don't know everything! No matter how much I like one, if my mother's instinct is telling me something different, I will never again quiet myself! My daughter's first signs were slow growth. She was dropping down on the charts and all I got was that since she could...
  15. Hi! I think it is time to find a new ped GI! It is my understanding that Celiac patients need regular follow ups and blood tests to ensure they are not getting any gluten. That being said, since your other children have not been tested initially, I don't know if it would be very effective. Before having your youngest go gluten-free, you might want to...
  16. My daughter was much younger, and pretty lethargic by the time she was diagnosed, so it was easier, but one thing I did was not try and replace everything at once. After trying a couple different breads, I decided to just not give her bread for awhile. By the time I started again, I made the bread, and since it had been awhile, she didn't have as much to...
  17. Michelle, I know just where you were, because I was there in March when my daughter (then 4-1/2) was diagnosed. Looking back, we can also see symptoms have been around for awhile, but other then the slow growth, it went undetected. I know how overwhelming it is when they have been so sick (she also suddenly got really sick) and there is so much to learn...
  18. Hi, I am hoping someone can help me! We recently moved and now our water does not have fluoride in it so my kids need suplements. Their new doctor prescribed chewables for my daughter, but I don't see any listing other than Sodium Fluoride. How do I find out what it has in it? Is there a way to contact the company that makes it, or do I have to rely on...
  19. I would think any article describing cross contamination would help. Realizing that if you stir the pasta with the wrong spoon can make someone sick might help bring home the point that you are not being paranoid about a crumb. It is hard for people to grasp sometimes, but if these are proffesionals in child care, they need to be putting out an effort as...
  20. I really don't know why they put him on soy formula, judging by the hospital records (he was almost a month old when we got him) it just mentions he spit up a little. He always seemed fine on the milk based formula, although I do remember trying a different brand and he being gassy and irritable on it. I was thinking about the over-exposure thing with allergies...
  21. OK, does anyone have any reccomendations on sites regarding food allergies? I tried looking around this morning, but from what I found, it is rare to develop a milk allergy after 1 year old, and rare to become lactose intollerant before 2 or 3 and he fits right in between! To make a long story short, I am starting to think he might be craving the milk for...
  22. Thanks everyone! If it really is an allergy, isn't that fairly easy to test for? Or if he is just lactose intollorant is it more just something you have to experiment with? I have learned more about allergies and such here, but there is still a lot I don't know! Thanks everyone, Michelle
  23. Thanks Helen, I don't want to rush to a celiac disease idea, but after the last 6 months with my dd, I guess it is just on my mind! Food allergy maybe makes sense though, he did have an allergy to the soy formula he was on when we first brought him home. He was having blood in the stool, so it was very obvious then. I would shudder to think about...
  24. Hi, my daughter was diagnosed with Celiac's disease in March and has been gluten free ever since, it is so good to see her healthy again! She is our only biological child. Our son, who we adopted, is now 21 months old, and I don't know if I am just paranoid, or if he could be showing signs of celiac disease! He doesn't seem to have regular stools, he will...
