  1. You have a wonderful idea brewing here. There are NO restaurants in my area that have dedicated gluten free options, so if and when I eat out, i have to be very specific and it gets met with resistance and people think I am just being finicky. as one other poster said - converting traditional recipes to gluten free is really more simple than some might...
  2. Hello there! I am gluten free for a year now. It took me a good 6 months to actually feel "healed". I have not had the issues with milk that others have stated/experienced, so I cannot comment on that. I can say that if i stick to mostly rice products with a few corn products I do MUCH better. The description you are giving sounds like your intestines...
  3. I am extra sensitive celiac patient myself. I cannot eat things produced on common equipment or anything of the sort. Any tiny tiny cross contamination sends me in a spiral of pain, migraine, nausea, vomiting and of course the diarrhea -- all of which are lasting a minimum of 2 days. I have become very diligent about making sure my dishes/pots/pans/etc...
  4. I agree totally with the warning the people you live in close quarters with when you have been glutened. I, too, just say, "I got glutened" and the people close to me know exactly what that means. It also helps them to understand and be prepared better - they are getting to where they even will help me by getting me a ferrous fumerate and gatorade to help...
  5. I washed the dishwasher with nothing in it twice and now I thoroughly rinse all dishes and then put them in the dishwasher together, except wood and plastic. I run it on pots and pans, high heat and always use an extra rinse cycle. I have 1 counter in the kitchen that holds all my gluten-free appliances (breadmaker, steamer, indoor grill and coffee pot...
  6. I too have tried eating just gluten-free and using common cooking/eating stuff - since going to using only metal and glass prep/cook/bake kitchen stuff with my own new plastic/wood utensils I am finally starting to feel much better and have not had any symptoms for about a week (switched these things about 3 wks ago). I haven't replaced the toaster yet,...
  7. Hello everyone! I did not realize how common depression is with celiac disease - I am realy good at thinking I am different in a bad way -- working really hard to overcome it though. I too feel extreme depression that lasts for up to a week any time I have been glutened. NOt only depression, but foggy brain, poor memory, migraines and more. I have found...
  8. I will take all the encouragement, support and advice I can get. I will do whatever it takes to not feel totally ill and like it is all in my head again. I'm delighted I found this forum as you have all been very good to me
  9. Thank you! I too think we need to be realistic & do what we can. I have 2 dogs, a cat and a turtle--all of which i wash my hands after being in contact with them, their toys or their food. I appreciate the advice about the toasdter as i just cannot afford a separate one right now as well as the info about teflon pans---what about glass/bare metal pans...
  10. No, maam, i have just been going with my family practitioner so far. i was diagnosed in feb 2008. where are you from?
  11. I am in Aurelia, Iowa and have been looking for other Iowans to gather and support one another. I live approximately 1.25 hrs east of Sioux City, IA. Hy-Vee has been very helpful and is special ordering different things and is much cheeper than specialty stores.
  12. good evening all: i had rls as well until going gluten free. also, i have been chronically anemic (since birth actually) and just take ferrus fumerate (gluten-free of course) 3 times a day with no more rls and my anemia is well-conrolled. I agree on the bread: Kinni Kwick is my favorite.
  13. I have been "glutened" a few times by cross contamination in the kitchen, but have not had any issues ith my makeup, shampoo, etc. I use Pantene. I also use Aveeno bath products without issue. I had severe migraines all my life until going gluten free. I also suffered brain fog, sensitivity to light, lethargy, fatigue, tingling and numbness, ringing in...
  14. I agree that it is nice to have real people who actually do understand and can be supportive. I went out and bought all new cooking utensils for myself and have also gotten my own pots, pans, storage containers, etc. All of this has helped to lessen the stress related to living gluten free.
  15. Hello everyone, I am new to this myself, having only been diagnosed in February this year. I had been hospitalized with intractable nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and severe pain 3 times in a week. My boyfriend (lives in Minneapolis) was watching an episode of the TV show House where a patient had the same symptoms and was diagnosed with Celiac Disease...
