  1. Hi everyone I've been gluten-free for over a month, and am now in toronto where finding affordable and reliable gluten-free products like muffin mixes and such seems to be difficult. So, I would like to be prepared to do some adventures in gluten-free baking. I've never done tons of baking from scratch in the first place, and now if I'm going to have anything...
  2. GINGER! it's my best friend. It's an excellent anti-nauseant that works just as well as gravol without the sleepy-stones side effects. You can get capsulated ginger in the vitamin section of your health food store, drink ginger tea, or Gravol now puts out a ginger pill. It will only help with stomach upset and lessen your D problems, but it does work quite...
  3. Hi, glad you're doing well with the diet. I try to be open about the whole gluten-free thing, though not blibber on about it too much. You shouldn't be embarrased to talk about legitimate health problems, but of course, if you feel uncomfortable, just say that you don't want to get into the yucky details. (bathroom problems are not always appropriate for...
  4. Hi, This week, I picked up a bag of salted pistachio nuts at the grocery store. Today, I decided to take a bunch to school as a snack. I ate many of them this morning and as it progressed I started to feel more and more crappy, stomach started aching, vision went very unfocused, and i was making many spelling mistakes in my notes this afternoon. It dawned...
  5. thanks guys I'm starting to think that it's probably my sinuses, since it's been constant for almost a week. maybe i'm getting sinusitis or something. I don't think i've gotten glutened, but could be that, as Peter said, now that i'm absorbing things better the meds are hitting me much harder. but havn't taken anything other than ibuprophen in the past couple...
  6. in that case, it's probably not the juice or fruit per se but the acidity level. It's funny cause I had tomato in my salad at noon today and felt a little funny after, and same with the guacamole i made tonight. figured it was just my cold. anyone else got tomato problems?
  7. I've had trouble with orange juice too. If i just have a little it's okay, but too much makes me nauseous. Eating oranges is no problem though. It might very well be the acidity. I also seem to have trouble with tomatoes lately too. Do you have any problem with tomatoes or other relatively acidic foods? Peggy
  8. Hi Everyone, I've been gluten free for over a month now and doing really well, very few known glutenings, hardly ever have stomach pains or get bloated. It's been good. I just moved to Toronto last week, and came down with a bad cold on the weekend. Ever since I got sick and started to take some cold medication, etc, i've been feeling very light-headed...
  9. Thanks for the replies! Yeah, I also have trouble with some brands of rice noodle and not others, and I've only bought one kind of sweet-potato noodle. so, it could be a cc thing, which is impossible to check with an asian country. I guess it might be best to keep trying different brands until you find the one that works. thanks
  10. Thanks for the help. I did have much better luck yesterday, when I found my local health food store, which had a limited but good selection of gluten-free products. I'm sure I'll find where to get everything I need eventually. thanks
  11. Hi, I've just moved to Toronto, more specifically Long Branch near Humber Lakeshore, and would love to get some advice from local celiacs. I've only been here a couple days, but am finding gluten free products extremely difficult to find at grocery stores, etc. Does anyone know a good place to shop? Or eat? or any advice to a small town NBer now in the big...
  12. I've only been on the diet for the past month, but even now there have been some obvious improvements. - I don't feel like total crap after I eat, and if I do get a bit of an ache, it tends to go away much faster, less resorting to gallons of ginger tea. - My pants are swimming on me! Just a year ago I could barely squeeze into some of them, and now even...
  13. Hi everyone I love asian food, so a common meal for me is rice noodles. I also love korean sweet-potato starch noodles (Japchae) which (according to my local asian food store owner) are just starch and water. However, many of these foreign (often chinese-made) noodles seem to bother me. It may just be a sensitivity, or the way I prepare them, but could there...
  14. Hi foodiegirl. I don't know much about h.pylori, so that could be causing some extra problems for you, but the rest of your symptoms sound a lot like what i'm going through. I've only been gluten-free for a few weeks, but I am feeling much better, though am starting to notice that other non-gluten things bother me. like eggs! Are you partially vegetarian...
  15. Hi Krystal, I just started on the GFD a few weeks ago too, and it had indeed been rough. I don't have a diagnosis, but am quite positive that I have either Celiac or Gluten Intolerance. It took me a few days, but I feel so much better eating gluten-free, but -part weakness/part experiment- I have caved and cheated a few times, only once a week, (the known...
  16. Hi there, Well, you're not alone. I've been suffering from anxiety, mild depression and occasional panic attacks for a few years. I also have GI problems. My mother and sister both have Celiac, and my sis went through a horrible experience with severe anxiety that only got worse with meds and gluten. Now that she's on the gluten-free diet and off her meds...
  17. I think if you feel better on the GFD, then stick to it. My mother, sister, and several of my family members have celiac and gluten intolerance, and I've been suffering increasing symptoms for the past couple years. of course, my bloodwork has come back negative twice, which at first made me wonder if it was indeed all in my head (which really does make you...
  18. Thanks for the replies I would love to have a diagnosis, finally, but I may have to wait a little longer. Unfortunately, scheduling a biopsy before I leave probably isn't possible. I'm basically going to act as though I do have the disease, which will be tricky at times, but I'm pretty confident. I guess I just have to get used to asking virtually anywhere...
  19. Heh. This is interesting. I've been working as a waitress in a pizza restaurant for the past 8 months. There's always flour somewhere, and it is likely all through the air as well. I just started going gluten free a couple weeks ago (and feeling better), and have joked that eating way too much pizza made the celiac kick in. Maybe I wasn't completely wrong...
  20. Hello everyone, A couple weeks ago, after several consecutive days of feeling absolutely rotten after eating, I decided to take some action and go gluten free. I haven't been diagnosed with Celiac, but have been having numerous increasing symptoms for at least a year. My mother, sister, and several family members have the disease. I have gotten IgA/IgG...
  21. Hi this is really interesting for me too, since I've just started on the Gluten free diet (1 week now), as a self-diagnosis thing. It hasn't been long enough to tell, but my stomach problems have diminished, constipation is getting better, and i think I've started to sleep better too. sorry, not much help to you, but just be aware that everyone has different...
  22. thanks, it's good to know that others have had the same problem. I'm currently beginning an attempted week without gluten just to see if it makes any difference whatsoever (I'm getting tired of feeling like crap after I eat practically anything), and the next time I see my doctor will demand to a: actually see my blood results and find out what the normals...
  23. Hello everyone, I've posted here a few times, as I have been sitting on the fence as to weather I could have celiac or not. A bit of history, for those who will ask: have been suffering mild GI problems for a few years, as well as anemia-like symptoms, depression, etc. In the past year or so these have gotten worse and it has to be either a: increase in...
  24. Hello all, well, I've tried to stop stressing about the possibility of having celiac for a bit, but I just got my most recent blood test results back and my liver bilirubin count is still high. Normals are 2-18, but mine is currently 29. There is no real danger caused by this elevation of bilirubin, but could it possibly a sign or symptom of celiac disease...
  25. This is interesting, since my mom has been saying that your blood test readings usually don't change, but if it does actually show whether gluten is causing damage to your system, then obviously it could change. In that case, I will get it re-tested as frequently as possible to keep checking. In Canada, a positive biopsy is the only way you can be a "certified...
