  1. I have a 5 yr old and I think I need to institute a 504. I've been researching the 504 information on the web. Can anyone help me understand the schools reaction to a possible 504? Why do schools and teachers always seem against a 504 for celiacs or allegies? Where does the negative conotation come from? From what I understand a 504 would address problem...
  2. Welcome to the world of kiddos with Celiacs. I also have a 5 yr old celiac. She's had Celiacs for 3 yrs. She is Gluten free/casein free. She reacts differently to dairy than wheat. At least that is what we think. The only time she had a bad wheat reaction it involved vomiting and diahrea for a solid week - very scary for everyone. Off to the gastro which...
  3. From what I am learning about 504s and school systems. You may want to talk about a 504 to document your current agreement with the school. You may also want to talk with the Principal about the changing needs of your child through middle school and high school. There may be a reason to set the 504 rules in place now becasue of what will be happening in her...
  4. I'm seriously considering getting a 504 for my child. From what I understand it will help "control" how food is used in the classroom, cafeteria procedures, field trips, etc. I'm also looking for more inforation too. Does anyone have a 504 for their child? Any insight?
  5. I understand your frustration! I can handle the gluten side, but the casein/dairy shocks me. I find dairy in the weirdest places. If you are having that many problems with the diet, stick to unprocessed foods for a while until you feel better. The easiest way to manage the diet for me is to look up or call the manaufacturer on EVERY product you eat or...
  6. If you're negative on the blood work and biopsy, then "medically speaking" you don't have Celiacs. But, you can still try the gluten free diet. Some people just dont have an easy time getting a positive biopsy. Try the strict gluten-free diet and see if you feel better. Then in a month or two eat some gluten and wait to see what happens. If you have a gluten...
  7. Thanks for the advice. I have a meeting planned with the teacher before the beginning of the school year. So I wanted to get everything organized first. Is supplying the safe arts and crafts list too much? I was planning on leaving a snack box in the class with a non-perishable lunch in case of emergency as well as other snacks and candies.
  8. We travel quite a bit. I have two young kids with food allergies. Here's what we do. Before we go, I look up healthfood stores and call to see what gluten-free foods they carry that my kids like. That way I know where I can pick up Bread and cookies. I stop at the grocery stores to pick up fruit and Boars Head deli meats for sandwhiches. If you are...
  9. My Celiac (gluten-free/CF) child is starting elementary school this fall. Does anyone have any advice about what to tell the teacher? I don't want to scare the teacher, but I want to make sure she fully understands cross-contamination and how to keep my child safe. Also, is there a list of SAFE gluten-free craft and art products? Thanks!
  10. Hi, I'm havign some thyroid problems. I'm not sure yet if I'll be put on medication for Hypo or Hyper thyroid issues. Can anyone recommend what medications work best for them AND are gluten free? Any other advice on what I need to know about thyroid problems?
  11. I've also got gastroparesis and celiacs. They took out my gallbladder before I found out about Celiacs. And they've taken my appendix too. I had the pain on the right under my rib cage. I feel much better with out it. Just stick to low fat foods after. As for the gastroparesis, I was put on Reglan for a while. Now I keep getting notices that there are some...
  12. I'm all for medic alert id's. I'll propbably get one for my youngest when she enters grade school. It gives kids a voice with power and authority that they may not have without their parent standing next to them. My question is because Celiacs is not as well known or understood in the medical field as all of us would hope, would wearing a celiac/gluten...
  13. I prefer PF Chang's, but if I don't have that option I'll eat at a regular Chinese restaurant. The only meal that I feel is safe from cross-contamination and language barrier problems is the Healthy options: Steamed Chicken and veggies - PLAIN - NO SAUCE. Bring your own sauce from home in a small container. I use just about anything for a good sauce. The...
  14. Does anyone know if there is a support group established on the southside of Atlanta?
  15. Thanks everyone. I'll see if I can get her in to one of them and get a better answer to her issues.
  16. Try not to worry about the whole procedure. It is scary for you, but your child will be fine. Talk to the dr before hand if you want to be present when they put your child to sleep. Don't worry about the nursing part. Pump a bottle or two for them if you think they really need it in recovery. I've held my kids as they put the mask on them to put them under...
  17. I'm having a very hard time finding a good Pediatric Gastro in my area. Can anyone recommend a good kids gastro in the Atlanta region? I'm willing to drive some distance if people can recommend from their personal experiences. My 4 yr old is having some new problems so I need a dr to do a new evaluation on what might be going on. Thanks!
  18. Can anyone recommend a good book or give me a link for information about how CEliacs affects toddlers and young kids? Specifically I am looking for post-diagnosis height and weight gain issues, vomiting, and continual weird little issues. Thanks!
  19. I have a 4 yr old who is currently on the gluten-free/CF diet. She has been on the diet for almost 2yrs now. We have experience and know the gluten-free/CF routine well, so I am not very worried about contamination problems. She started out in about the 75% for height and weight. After serious decline in health she was finally tested for Celiacs a little...
