  1. I feel for your boy, it must be discouraging to continue feeling so poorly, but at least the healing process has begun. I wonder if your doctor has checked his thyroid and also for thyroid antibodies? That might account somewhat for the fatigue. It sure wouldn't hurt to have him take a really good multivitamin for awhile and possibly some probiotics...
  2. When visiting family after being diagnosed with celiac, my father-in-law got out a loaf of home-made bread and told me I would be able to eat some of it because he didn't put gluten in it. He proceeded to get out a package of Vital Wheat Gluten and assure me he hadn't used it. My husband said "it doesn't matter, it already has gluten in it" but his dad...
  3. Hope all the advice is giving you some good support! I too remember that feeling of having my world turned upside down as all sorts of foods were now off limits. The cravings do go away though, and when you think of what you used to eat, it will just be a memory like any other. There is always something else you can eat and you need not feel deprived...
  4. Hello - your story sure sounds familiar. I got the run-around too, for 25 years to be exact. It was always something, but they never thought of celiac disease. I don't think stopping the eating of gluten for 2 or 3 weeks would affect the antibody levels that much, but I can't help you out reading the test results. Did you feel better while you were...
  5. My aunt, age 88 with no family of her own, recently moved from her house in Vancouver to a seniors apartment not far away. She had fractured her spine at the beginning of January, and after spending a month in the hospital had come to realize that it was time to get some help. My older brother, who's retired, had gone out to stay with Aunty, facilitating...
  6. Well it's been a long slog getting to this point. I thought I was finally on the road to recovery, but the swirling vortex of psycho-babble is pulling me down - again! As my grandson would say, "Yikes!!!" To bring you all up to date, my history goes something like this: I didn't have that many symptoms as a kid but it became problematic when I started...
  7. Good luck with your kitchen clean out. I found I had way more cupboard space when I got rid of all the stuff with gluten!!! I was appalled at the mountain of 'convenience foods' I had crammed in there, not to mention the big sacks of flour. There are more small packages for the different types of non-gluten grains and flours that you need for baking, but...
  8. We were told that first degree relatives should definitely be tested, but I've heard that some doctors recommend that second degree relatives also be checked. What amazes me is not many doctors think of testing people with another autoimmune disease; they're told to test diabetics but just ignore all the folks who are hypothyroid, asthmatic, etc. even though...
  9. Hello. I'm posting here because I'm upset over a doctor's lack of awareness. I was diagnosed with celiac a year ago. My son and daughter both were told to get the blood test; my son's test came back negative but my daughter found out she is also celiac. However, it's my son's little boy, Joe that I'm concerned about. Joe has just turned two and...
  10. Thank you all very much for the suggestions and I'll try to follow up on them. Of course it is possible I'm somehow getting gluten, although I'm pretty careful. The kitchen/house is gluten free to the best of my knowledge but I'm going to recheck. (My husband does have wheat bread and cookies, but keeps them in a separate area.) I already cook from scratch...
  11. Hello. I'm writing because of headaches and am wondering if anyone else has experienced something like this. It's got me a bit puzzled. I'd started getting headaches at age 7 and they got increasingly worse for years. Finally I had a headache pretty much all the time for the 10 years before I was diagnosed with celiac, which was in Feb. 2010. I used...
  12. It's probably a good idea to use a toaster that has a removable and therefore washable rack. Get rid of pots and pans that are pitted, otherwise they should be ok, but apparently some people who are very sensitive to any sort of cross contamination have to have their own cookware. You should get yourself a new cutting board and not use wooden spoons or...
  13. When I was diagnosed, we set up a gluten free area of the kitchen, and a section that was not. It was hard to remember to keep things in the appropriate area, especially at first. I was just as guilty as my husband who is not celiac, maybe more so because I had done so much baking and cooking in that kitchen that I had to break my long standing habits of...
  14. new here

I know exactly what you mean. I've taken depression drugs for years. Now I think it's been Celiac all along

  15. One of the books I've read recently suggested taking a laxative if you inadvertently ate something with gluten in it. Don't know if it helps, haven't tried it yet.
  16. The other day I picked up a little container of 'Grapple' apples; grape flavored apples. I had no idea 'Grapples' were anything but a new variety of apples to hit the market, just like 'Pink Ladies' or 'Ambrosia' and a few others have in recent years. I ate a couple of them, they were quite tasty and I rather enjoyed them. Didn't seem to have any problem...
  17. Thanks so much for the support and information. It's given me a lot to think about and a course of action; finding a more informed doctor!
  18. I was finally diagnosed with celiac disease on Feb. 3rd, 2010. To sum up my sad story I started getting headaches at age 7, but it was attributed to 'being too emotional'. Many other symptoms came and went over my teen and young adult years but nothing really terrible; I had a fairly normal life. Then at age 27 I became pregnant with my second child and...
