  1. The introductory lecture of the clinical forum of the International Celiac Disease Symposium (ICDS) 2013 in Chicago last week was entitled “Celiac Disease Today: An Overview” given by Drs. Alessio Fasano and Peter Green. Although the official slides and presentations from the symposium are not yet available for purchase, based on my notes the following top...
  2. Hi Susan, I am so sorry to hear about all of the suffering that your little boy has experienced. It seems like in most cases the biggest source of cross contamination is when people keep a shared home and kitchen? Is your entire house GF? If it isn't, it am help to take all gluten out of the home. I am just about the most Type A person in the world, and...
  3. Hi NoPainNoGrain, Thank you for sharing your story. It sounds like your intestines may not be fully healed yet (and, hence, not ready for grains). I hope that you find a diet this works for you. Jess
  4. I spent a good chunk of last Christmas Eve in an MRI scanner, getting my spine analyzed for the white matter lesions of multiple sclerosis (MS). Mike, the MRI technician, piped George Winston’s “December” celiac disease through my MRI headphones, but the music did little to drown out the loud hammering sounds of the MRI and the thoughts that were racing in my...
  5. Hi Josie, I am sorry that I am just seeing this now. I think that you are getting differing advice because you fall into such a gray area of what to do. Although it makes sense to wait to heal, improve your bowel absorption, and rest (as I wrote about in this paper when I reviewed this topic), if you are 37, your fertility is rapidly dwindling. Although...
  6. That is such great news that you are feeling better and realizing that certain GF grains do not work for you. Quinoa really did a number on me in the beginning.
  7. I have spent a good portion of this summer enjoying my time with my family, traveling, and not obsessing about celiac disease (which has led me to not write about it either!) Overall, I am comfortable with my gluten free household and life and have accepted my diagnosis. But, the other day, in part due to fatigue and in part due to accidentally eating a KIND...
  8. I have four children, who are all at high risk for developing Celiac Disease. I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease 3 years ago, but have had symptoms since early childhood. My husband does not have Celiac Disease, but he carries one of the two main Celiac genes, DQ2. Due to my children’s risk, I have had their pediatrician screen them when they turn 4 years o...
  9. Hi D, The more women that I hear through from my main blog, the more I am convinced that a lot of us have a mast cell problem in addition to Celiac Disease. I am in the midst of getting my insurance to approve a trip to the Mayo Clinic for an evaluation. Once I go there I will report back what I find. J
  10. Hi snash, You are welcome. There seem to be a LOT of us who have both Celiac Disease and problems with our menstrual cycles. Although there must be a relationship between the 2 problems, research into this is really lacking. I wish you the best on your gluten free journey!
  11. There are many of us with celiac disease who develop additional food intolerances after going gluten free. Despite maintaining control of my celiac symptoms by being strictly gluten free, I have become intolerant to soy (2011), sulfites (2012), and too much dairy (late 2012-early 2013). My allergy skin prick tests for soy and milk were negative, which shows...
  12. I am not sure. I have been unable to post for the last few weeks because my posts stay stuck in draft mode. Peter, the admin, has been posting for me since I can no longer do it myself. Are you having similar issues?
  13. Hi D, Glad that you are feeling better and that your vitamin and iron levels are trending in the right direction! Jess
  14. Thanks D and Peter. Hope we can all get ourselves back to being able to post soon!
  15. Hi D, Good to "see" you and glad we are back to blogging (even though we can't post!) Hope your sister finds it helpful! J
  16. As I was doing my weekly glance through the PubMed database (www.pubmed.gov) I came across an interesting letter to the editor in the Archives of Gynecology and Obstetrics entitled, “Celiac Disease and Endometriosis: What is the Nexus?” Endometriosis is a common gynecologic disorder, which effects approximately 10% of women of childbearing age. It involves the...
  17. Hi Diana, I still can't post to my blog. How were you able to be successful in posting? Are there any updates on what the problem is? If any moderators are reading this, I would love to have my review of "Celiac Disease and Endometriosis" posted. Thanks! Jess
  18. Mr. GF, That is very sad that your own MD, who has Celiac Disease, does not keep up to date on the management of your shared problem. This is a misperception that this is an easy disease to manage, since it is diet controlled, but as we all know it can be quite a challenge to avoid small amounts of incidental cross contamination. It's a lot more difficult...
  19. Hi Scott, I just had the same problem again, I tried to post a new entry and it is stuck in draft mode. Prior to posting I had checked my settings to make sure that new posts were to be in "publish" mode instead of "draft" mode. I have never this problem until this month. Are others experiencing the same thing?
  20. Hi Irish Heart, It is nice to "see" you on here. I hope that parents can bring this info forward to their kids' physicans to challenge them when they recommend a gluten challenge. Just about all MDs have access to "Up to Date" and should be able to read the article which I summarized. I think it is important for patients to have as much knowledge as possible...
  21. You are welcome. Thanks for stopping by!
  22. You are welcome! I hope that you begin to feel better soon!
  23. Hi Scott, Peter direct messaged me and published them for me. They were stuck in draft mode and I am unsure why. I will let you know if I have future problems. Thank you!
  24. “Up to Date” is an online medical database for physicians and other practitioners. I use it almost every day when I am at work to get a brief overview of the most recent evidence regarding the diagnosis and management of my patients’ problems. I just reviewed the most recent “Up to Date” highlights on the management of Celiac Disease in adults (publishe...
  25. Nonresponders are the 5% of Celiac patients who have either persistent symptoms and/or abnormally high Celiac antibodies after two years on the gluten free diet. According the most recent medical review in the “Up to Date” database, there are 5 main categories of nonresponders to the gluten free diet: -Patient is continuing to eat gluten. This is ...
