ARCHIVED 20 Month Old Celiac Testing
shaleen replied to Apapdayton's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm in the same boat as you. I have a 20 month old who was labeled as failure to thrive (he's 18 pounds) and after months of a gluten free diet he's completely another kid (no weight gain yet though)...but they wanted me to start him on gluten again and keep him on for 2 months before they would test for celiac disease...after a week of gluten I said, no... -
ARCHIVED 3 Yr. Old With Celiac And Still Not Gaining/growing
shaleen replied to jaimek's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi! I do in fact have the same issues you have!! My 20 month old son stopped growing at 10 months. He's weighed 18 pounds for the last 10 months...hasn't gained an ounce. He sees a naturopathic doctor and a nutritionist (we already saw a gastroenterologist). Their rendition of what's happening is this: That because he has celiac disease his stomach... -

ARCHIVED Question On Son's Behaviors.
shaleen replied to shaleen's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
He was put on a gluten free/dairy free/corn free diet after a naturopathic doc did testing on him. He's is labeled failure to thrive by his pediatrician as he has been 17 pounds since he was 10 months old and he is now 19 months old (same weight). We were supposed to have an endoscopy but the GI doc wouldn't touch him unless he had gluten for 2 months and... -
ARCHIVED Question On Son's Behaviors.
shaleen posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi everyone. I am in a real rut with my 19 month old son's behaviors. He has been gluten/corn and dairy free now for a few months. He is very small for his age (17 pounds) but the most disturbing thing right now is his behaviors. He has been a headbanger now for about 6+ months and it is only getting worse. Saturday night I almost brought him to the... -

ARCHIVED Ok...this Is What The Doctors Said....
shaleen posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Okay, so to recap...my 19 month old stopped gaining weight when he was 10 months. We've had numerous blood tests, a sweat test, have gone to appointments with gastroenterologists, a naturopathic and a dietician. The first doc we went to was the naturopathic (when his pedi she didn't know why he wasn't gaining)...and he did some testing and told me that... -
ARCHIVED How To Heal A Childs Gut/intestines
shaleen replied to shaleen's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My dietician made that diagnosis. She said that inhalers are notorious for doing damage to the intestinal lining...she also thought that swine flu had something to do with it also because he had it the exact same time he stopped growing (that is also when we started the inhaler). Seriously, I don't know what to believe anymore, I just want him to get better... -
ARCHIVED How To Heal A Childs Gut/intestines
shaleen posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi everyone. While my son has numerous allergies including gluten/wheat, dairy, corn and tomatoes I was just told by our nutritionist and naturopathic that my son's intestines/gut was probably ruined by an inhaler that our pediatrician put my son on at 10 months. They say we need to "heal the intestines/gut" before he will start to put on any weight. Any... -
So, I've made my decision. Despite the fact that the GI docs want to keep my 18 month old on gluten for 2 months, I took it away from him yesterday. What an amazing difference. It was actually like watching a person on drugs coming down but last night and this morning...I have a totally different little boy!!!! It's just crazy the way celiac disease works...

ARCHIVED Can You Diagnose celiac disease Through The Rash?
shaleen replied to shaleen's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
Our rashes are red and scaly...come on rather quickly but take forever to go away. The redness fades once the culprit is taken out of his diet (not sure exactly what the "culprit" is yet) but the hardness lasts for weeks. It usually occurs on his forearms and legs. He's never gotten any of the rashes on the trunk of his body or his hands or feet....oh... -
ARCHIVED Can You Diagnose celiac disease Through The Rash?
shaleen posted a topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
I've been having problems with my 18 month old. He was diagnosed with failure to thrive (he's 17 pounds and 18 months old). The GI doc says she thinks it's celiac disease however she wants me to put him BACK ON the gluten for at least 2 months before she will do an endoscopy on him. He is on day 6 and already developed an ear infection (his first one)... -
ARCHIVED Glutenizing...
shaleen replied to shaleen's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
So yes, I think the pediatrician is deciding to call it a day with my little one. He has rashes covering his arms and legs...just 3 days after starting the gluten. He just started with an ear infection and has been smashing his head on anything and everything. If this continues, she said to discontinue the gluten on Thursday of this week. THanks for everyone... -
Not sure if that is what you would call it but I just got back from the GI doc who wants me to put my 18 month old back on gluten for 2 months before they'll do the endoscopy. I was wondering how I'm going to deal with all the ill side effects he gets for a whole 2 months!!! Any help would be appreciated...he usually gets diarrhea and mad rashes. Plus they...

ARCHIVED What Are Your Child's Reactions To Gluten?
shaleen replied to LJ-Mom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son is 18 months and has mushy poops that sometimes lead to diarrhea. Even when he does not have gluten they never get "perfect". Some or at least half have undigested food and are clay colored with an absolute horrific smell. I do believe he has other digestive issues as well however. Not sure if that helps but gluten is one of the things they are... -
ARCHIVED Genetic Testing?
shaleen replied to shaleen's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
He was tested for all types of food allergies...all came back negative and it's completely clear he's allergic to stuff. Before I took him off of gluten/dairy/corn he had severe, severe rashes on his legs and arms...all disappeared as soon as I started the diet. He also had pretty bad loose stools...they are better...not completely but better. There still... -
ARCHIVED Genetic Testing?
shaleen replied to shaleen's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
His rashes went away almost instantaneously....like within 2 days the rashes were TOTALLY gone. I'm very confused because my mother (who watches him 2 days a week) said he had diarrhea yesterday all day...and he hasn't had any gluten or dairy that I know of. And I know what you're saying about the diet/fat thing. I don't know if he's getting enough but... -
ARCHIVED Genetic Testing?
shaleen replied to shaleen's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son has skin issues as well...major, major skin rashes on his arms and legs...but since I've taken gluten, dairy, oranges and corn out of his diet the rashes have disappeared! His problem is that he just doesn't gain weight. And yes, stools are an issue with us as well...clay colored loose stools are an everyday thing for him. His blood work for the... -
Hi...I'm new here. I have an 18 month old who is diagnosed as failure to thrive. He will be going to a pediatric GI doc next week. My question...has anyone heard of genetic testing (which I read can be done either by blood or by a swab test)? It seems that may be MORE accurate then the endoscopy? Just wondering. And my son...is 18 months old, weighs...
