About Me

I was diagnosed with celiac disease by anti-tTG blood test on 20 January 2011. They still haven't told me if they are going to do a biopsy or not, but they told me to go ahead and stop eating gluten. It was apparently sufficiently high that they didn't want me to wait. :)

I probably started to develop symptoms 30 years ago, but as a teenager with an eating disorder, I accepted that it was probably just that the 'greasy dorm food' didn't agree with me. I have developed serious depression, chronic fatigue, attention problems, IBS, dental problems, chronic pain and finally had a few episodes of gluten ataxia that scared me half to death. I've also had severe fertility problems and nearly died of eclampsia; my daughter did die. I was looking for answers to the fibro that I thought I had when I read about celiac disease and saw that almost everything that could possibly go wrong with that fit my profile, and the rest of them I didn't want to wait around for. I started paying attention to my symptoms and what I was eating and concluded that gluten might well be a problem.

It took some convincing to get my doctor to test me, as I am 'overweight' and even though I have had problems since I was a semi-anorexic teenager, they were convinced it was just my weight and my depression causing my aches and pains and stomach problems...

Being gluten free is the best ever. I feel so much smarter and more together and am looking forward to breaking up with my 3 pain meds and my 4 psych meds.

  1. I didn't want to wait but I did wait until a week after they did the blood work. The blood work in my case was so high off the chart that they told me not to wait, just go on the diet. I was so relieved! It's only been a few days and I also feel incredibly better. I wasn't as physically ill as you, from the sound of things, but I had terrible brain...
  2. Thanks everyone. It's noce to read about all the different expeirences. I am on day 5 of being gluten free and my digestion is so much better. I *think* I am sleeping a bit better and also i am not waking up with this cloud of black depression over my head (which felt like a physical pain, like my brain was affected). I don,t know how much of it is psycho...
  3. I've been gluten free for two days and I feel like my IQ went up 50 points. I was watching Fringe and I realised I don't remember most of the last season. Also, my missing sex drive has reappeared. Too bad I haven't had the energy to date for 8 years, LOL...I'm enjoying cooking my own food, it's something I was always too tired to do before. (If this...
  4. Just got a phone call from the doctor! :)
