  1. Atlanta! I am so jealous; I just got back from there about a week and a half ago and it was wonderful! I was there on business too so I had to eat out a lot. My favorites were Shane's Rib Shack, Longhorn Steakhouse, Red Robin (I went there three times in a week, haha) and The Outback. I am a sensitive Celiac and did not get glutened at any of those places. I also got a lot of my food from the Publix grocery store, which surprisingly had many gluten free options. Have fun!
  2. After I was diagnosed I gained about 12 pounds, which is a lot for me since I am short and on the low end of normal for my weight. I couldn't fit into any of my clothes and felt disgusting and fat. To try and combat the weight gain I put myself on a strict diet and worked out 2-3 hours every single day. This did nothing for me. In two weeks it will be exactly one year since diagnosis and I am just now getting my metabolism back. I relaxed a little on my diet, but am still eating very healthy. I also stopped working out so much and am now going to the gym about 5 times a week for 1-2 hours. When I stopped stressing out and started listening to my body the weight started coming off. I am now down 8 pounds and almost to my pre-diagnosis weight. I think the most important thing your body needs is time to heal. Gluten has done a lot of damage and your body is probably still in "starvation mode", which could explain it trying to hold onto everything you eat. It sucks right now, but trust me, it WILL get better with time. Hang in there:)
  3. I am traveling for work right now and am just outside of Atlanta. I eat a lot of protein bars for snacks and usually get the ThinkThin ones, which are awesome! Last night when I got into town I went to the store and stocked up on a few groceries. I bought Promax bars because they said gluten free right on the label. I just ate one, then realized that while it does say it is gluten free, on the fine print it states that it is processed on shared equipment with WHEAT! Whaaaaat? I am a very sensitive Celiac and I cannot afford to get glutened on this trip! Has anyone had the Promax bars and not had a problem?
  4. I am going to be taking a business trip at the end of this month and will be staying outside of Atlanta. The biggest grocery chain that is in the area is a Food Lion and I have no idea what to expect. Does anyone know if they carry gluten-free food?
  5. Yep, just had my yearly physical and all my blood tests came back perfectly normal.
  6. KuKuKaChoo52: I am making sure to get enough fiber, but taking a supplement is a good idea. I also know for a fact that I am not getting any cross contamination because I live alone and my kitchen is completely gluten free. I eat mostly whole foods and cook everything myself. Rarely, I will eat out, but only at places I trust. I replaced all my pans and cooking utensils and made sure to thoroughly clean all the cabinets and surfaces in my house when I moved in. I also had to buy a dishwasher, fridge, and oven when I bought my place and they have never had gluten in them. On a different note, I noticed that your picture is the Seahawks logo and that makes you totally awesome! I live close to Seattle and I am a HUGE Seahawks fan as well! Kelly777: Thanks for your reply! I do not eat many gluten free substitutes at all; I don't even remember the last time I had gluten free bread or pasta. The only things I really eat that are processed are plain rice chex with soy milk or sometimes a gluten free protein bar after I work out. Once every few weeks I will have a gluten free cookie as a treat, but I only buy one at a time. My diet is a really good balance of protein, carbs, and healthy fats and I never overeat. That's why I don't understand why I am having so much trouble with my metabolism. Maybe some of us will take longer than 6 months to recover? At 10 months out I am hoping this doesn't last much longer because I am going crazy!
  7. I was diagnosed nearly 10 months ago and have been strictly gluten free since. I noticed that now my metabolism is absolutely awful! I can eat 1200-1500 calories a day while going to the gym regularly and GAIN weight, which is just ridiculous. And it's not like I am eating junk food, my diet is very balanced and I rarely eat processed foods. I understand that my body was not absorbing nutrients very well before I was diagnosed, so it may still be in "survival mode". How long should I expect this to last? Will my metabolism go back to normal in time? This is getting sooo frustrating, especially with summer right around the corner.
  8. Bananas make me super sick too! I just get really nauseated for a few hours, definitely not as bad as getting glutened. It makes me sad since I love love love bananas and peanut butter together.
  9. Weird! I was out in the sun at an outdoor birthday party Sunday afternoon for a few hours and noticed my scalp was burning the next day in the shower. I looked at it in the mirror when I got out and noticed that my whole part was bright red! This has never happened to me before and I never burn anywhere else, even without sunscreen. I have been completely gluten free since last July, so it does make me wonder if that has something to do with it.

  11. Pregnancy was my trigger. In the fall of 2006 I learned I was pregnant, then rapidly started loosing weight. I lost close to 40 lbs in 3 months. Oddly, I was eating enough and not vomiting. Everything just seemed to go right through me. I lost the pregnancy (probably due to being malnourished) and never gained any of the weight back. From then on I noticed my stomach was never the same. I felt sick every time I ate and developed severe anxiety, but I just thought it was stress. In May and June of last year it got really bad and I would have to run to the bathroom every time I ate. I was eating 4,000 calories a day and still losing weight. I eventually went to the doctor after losing another 10 pounds and becoming severely underweight. He told me he suspected Celiac and sent me down to the lab. After getting my blood work done I had my last gluten meal (McDonald's bacon egg and cheese bicuit, mmm!) and went gluten free that day. That was June 30th, 2010. When I went back to the doctor to get my results I already knew what he would say because I had already responded wonderfully to my gluten free diet. I am happy to say that nearly 10 months in, I am feeling stronger every day and my anxiety has disappeared.

  13. I called that phone number as well as another 1-800 phone number for activa that I found and left messages on both two days ago. I have a feeling I will not be hearing back. I think I will just have to talk to my doctor about getting switched over to another pharmacy. I called around to several pharmacies in the area and can't seem to find another one that carries mylan either!
  14. I have a prescription for alprazolam (generic xanax). I travel a lot for work and take it when I fly to prevent panic attacks. Occasionally, I will have a panic attack out of the blue, so I will take a pill to stop it. Panic is also one of my symptoms of being glutened. My previous prescription was made by Mylan, but since then my pharmacy has switched over to Purepac. I could not sleep Thursday night so I took half a pill. The next day I developed my "gluten" stomachache, which basically feels like a side stitch a few inches above my belly button. Then, I had all the symptoms that I usually get from being glutened. I am positive that everything I ate on Thursday was safe, so the pill is the only thing I can pinpoint as being the possible culprit. I am feeling panicky like I usually do when I get glutened, but I don't dare take another pill! Has anyone else taken the Purepac generic? Did you react to it? I called several pharmacies and no one could tell me the gluten status and Purepac does not return phone calls!
  15. I actually feel like having Celiac is a blessing in disguise for me. I was diagnosed just over 9 months ago and I am 24 years old. My whole life I have never paid any attention to nutrition and was always eating junk food or fast food. Now, I have done a ton of research on healthy eating and learned how to cook. Having Celiac has given me a reason to take care of my body and I am sure in the long run I will be healthier than if I would have never had it. I get glutened occasionally and I'm not going to lie, it really sucks, but I have accepted the fact that it may happen sometimes. My symptoms are like clockwork, so I can work around them and get anything accomplished that I need to. For a long time I felt sorry for myself and was so angry that this happened to me, but I chose to stop feeling that way and think on the positive side of things. Yeah, I missed processed and fried foods for awhile and it was quite the adjustment. Now I don't remember what fast food or junky food tastes like so I no longer crave it. I feel like after eliminating those foods that natural foods have more flavor and I actually enjoy eating a lot more than I used to!
