  1. Thanks everyone. I feel fine today and I looked up the brand of the cookies and they seem to be well regarded, so I think it was probably just a fluke. It sounds like quick reactions can happen but not *so* quick I'd feel it while eating it, and the dodgy guts a few hours later was probably just a coincidence. It's so easy to see celiac/gluten in everything...
  2. Is it possible to have an immediate reaction to gluten as a celiac, not an allergy? As in, you are eating something and feeling it right then? Tonight I was at a friend's house and she had bought gluten-free cookies for me - very sweet of her. The package said gluten-free, the ingredients looked fine, but I didn't recognise the brand. It was an unopened...
  3. AH man wrong answer peoples! You were supposed to tell me I don't need to be so cautious! OK, OK, I'll keep being super paranoid and be the crazy one at the party. One thing I find hard is that I don't find people with allergies are so cautious. Like I have a friend who is allergic to wheat and feels awful when she eats wheat, but she isn't washing...
  4. I was diagnosed with celiac in the spring. My 7yo son was diagnosed about a month ago. Neither of us have noticed any big changes being gluten free and I am really strict about what we eat. Last night we were at a party. It was a potluck; we ate before we went and I brought a few snacks for my son. He ate some fruit pieces from a grocery store-bought...
  5. I was diagnosed with celiac about four months ago via a positive skin biopsy for DH and a positive ttg blood test (over 100). I immediately went gluten free. I just had a follow-up ttg test and the results were borderline, 15.5. Obviously a LOT lower than it was, but still not *quite* negative. I also haven't noticed much change in digestive symptoms - hardly...
  6. Thanks - I hope so too! Though with a baby and a 7-year-old we don't really do fine dining these days!
  7. Thanks everyone. I guess I was just looking for a general rule of thumb. That doesn't exist! I didn't say where in Europe I'm going because we aren't 100% sure yet, but it's either London and a couple of places in Scotland, or London and Budapest. Right now we are leaning towards London and Budapest. I found info by the Hungarian Celiac association...
  8. Any report on the trip? We are heading to London in a few weeks and would love to hear how it went for you!
  9. I'm going to Europe in three weeks for three weeks. I will have access to cooking facilities part of the time, but some eating out will happen. I was diagnosed a few months ago and haven't eat out since. I've been looking at the different options in the places I'll be and quite a lot of pasta/pizza places have gluten-free options. But can I really trust those...
  10. I realize that. I never suggested that my vitamin levels would change just because I'm off gluten, but rather now that I'm off gluten AND supplementing how long is it reasonable to expect for my vitamin levels to return to normal. Anyhow, I had my appointment with my GI. He thinks because my iron is going down rather than up (and I'm supplementing) and...
  11. Yup! Seeing my doctor tomorrow to discuss - just wanted to get some 'theoretically' info from the other type of experts on here!
  12. THanks everyone! That makes sense about the injections bypassing the gut - hadn't thought of that! My B12 is fine, and I'm taking 3000 Vit D a day (which some people say is high and other people say is low!). My iron isn't really low, so normally not something you'd consider injections for, but since we don't know if it's affecting breastfeeding it may be...
  13. I found out a few months ago I have celiac; been gluten-free ever since. Had various vitamin levels tested then and was low in Vitamin D and iron. Have been taking supplements for both for last couple of months. Had my iron re-tested last week and it's still low. (We re-tested so early because I'm breastfeeding and my baby is having trouble gaining weight...
  14. Sorry for the delay in responding, folks! Things have been pretty hectic around here! So one month gluten-free and it's not helped the baby at all. His poops did change within days of me going gluten-free but not sure if that wasn't just a coincidence. I'm noticing some slight digestive improvement for myself, but nothing big. Sigh. I had more blood tests...
  15. Oh and I'm in Canada if that makes a difference!
  16. I'm trying to figure out label and cc issues. Please help if you can! Would you eat food with only a few ingredients where you are sure the ingreds aren't gluten but it's not declared gluten-free? What about if it doesn't say either way if it's processed in a facility with wheat? Also I've been eating Garden of Eatin' Organic Baked Yellow Tortilla Chips...
  17. I was just looking into this today for myself! Open Original Shared Link is gluten- and lactose-free. Not sure if it's available to you or not - I'm in Canada.
  18. Yup. I make a chocolate cupcake with it that's pretty good!
  19. Thanks mushroom! Makes sense - so no gluten for me! I feel so impatient. I want answers for him NOW. And I want to start noticing some difference myself in how I feel off gluten!! NOW. Yeah, patience is a virtue, yeah yeah. Heh.
  20. I just found out last week I have celiac and my 4mo baby has not been gaining weight well so we are getting him tested for celiac - we know the test is not reliable at this age but he's getting other blood work done anyhow so we figured we may as well include this test too and if we get a positive we know that and if we get a negative we know it means nothing...

  22. LOL! On the plus side I figure at least I am used to looking at labels and not eating most products, so hey what's a few (??!!) more?! Oh the lies that we tell ourselves...! Noooooooooooooooooo don't say that about F-L!! I was happy with their website listing products that are gluten-free! Are you saying I shouldn't trust their list? This is...
  23. Thanks everyone! We are getting my other son tested and have suggested to my parents and sister that they get tested too. I suppose if the baby starts gaining weight now that I am gluten-free we will now he has an issue with celiac, but do you know how young babies can be tested for it? We have an appointment with a doc next week but I like to be armed with...
  24. Yes, that would probably be it! Good to know NZ has good labeling laws since I have a friend there I'd like to visit some day!
  25. Right, rinse like crazy - I can do that! Thank goodness because I don't know what I'd do without dried beans and lentils! I've been looking at the companies' websites too but not really finding much info on whether the food is considered safe or not. We often shop at our local Indian store but the brands are not ones I would be able to easily...
