  1. When I went to get tested I was steeled to hear refusals based on my ethnicity but very fortunately, it did not happen. However, there has been much skepticism from my own family who are not supportive about getting tested (my symptoms have been dismissed as being due to IBS and/or depression). I agree - fine, if it turns out to not be celiac, but at...
  2. Hello All, I'm not gluten-free yet - still waiting on test results, but in the meantime, I was wondering if there were any ways you found to cope with the fatigue? It is just so debilitating for me and has taken such a toll on my work performance. I am so worried about what the consequences are going to be for my career. I feel chronically exhausted...
  3. I am South Asian and suspect celiac disease for myself even though many (very frustratingly) are telling me it is impossible because of my ethnicity (am waiting for blood results). I had done some searches on the net and found that there is less of an incidence in non-European descended communities but not impossible. I think a few days ago I had come...
  4. Hi everyone, I did get tested two days ago - waiting for the results. But I don't think my doctor ordered the full panel - only antigliadin IgA and tTg IgA - is this enough? I don't know if it would be possible to ask her to add the others now - that is if it is possible for the lab to do it... Ravenwoodglass, Though I would not wish this for anyone...
  5. Hi Matilda, Thanks - that link was helpful as was what you wrote - I think I am getting a somewhat better handle on the difficulty in testing for this. I have been reading all over this board about how inconclusive testing can be, given the issue of extent of villous damage. I also see how people end up turning to Enterolab but how to interpret those...

ARCHIVED Looking For Doc In Nyc

Hi Kathy, it is good to hear that about her. Did she give you the diagnosis? Any tips on what to expect in the first meeting?
  7. Nini, How can I ensure the doctor orders the full panel? And what constitutes it - is the five tests that Kaiti has listed? And where does the genetic test fit in, if at all? Sorry, but I'm totally ignorant here...
  8. Kaiti and Matilda, Thanks for your responses. I am sure it would help me to educate myself here a little bit more, but all the information feels a little overwhelming right now, particularly in reading about people's varied experiences. It has been difficult to determine which are the specific and sensitive tests. I'm a little anxious because most...

ARCHIVED Looking For Doc In Nyc

I was misinformed the first time I called Columbia - I now have an appointment with Dr. Lee at the Celiac Disease Center in a couple of weeks for the diagnostic workup. Thanks for all the input.
  10. Julie, Kaiti, Magdeliscious, Right now I'm feeling awfully confused about testing: It does seem clear from your responses that it would be best to see a specialist rather than risk a doc who has no inkling what celiac disease is - thanks for validating that for me. But beyond that, I have seen so much floating on this board - Enterolab, York, false...

ARCHIVED Looking For Doc In Nyc

Well I called up Columbia today and they provide services post-diagnosis only. Can any doctor make the referral for the bloodwork? Are they knowledgeable enough about celiac disease to know which tests to order?
  12. My next question is - how do I get tested? Do I have to see a specialist? Can any doctor send me to the lab to have the tests run?

celiachap, My insurance coverage is lousy (am a grad student), so was wondering - are they expensive, at Columbia. I know Dr. Green is.
  14. Hi Kaiti, celiac3270 and frenchiemama - thanks for responding. I do hope to get tested soon, though people around me are skeptical as celiac disease is rare in my ethnic group - South Asian. celiac3270 & frenchiemama, fatigue and the cogitive symptoms are the most debilitating for me and the biggest challenge to work around. They've also gotten...

KaitiUSA, Loretta, celiachap, thanks to all of you for responding. I am going to try Dr. Lewis at Columbia which is close to where I live (Loretta, I may email you about questions) and if that doesn't work, maybe Brooklyn! Is that who you see celiachap? Thanks again.

Thanks! I had seen some of these posts but not all. I will try calling the CDC at Columbia again but was wondering if there was someone that could recommend a specific GI doctor besides Peter Green at CDCwho I would love to consult of course, but unfortunately cannot afford. But thanks for looking up those posts for me. Will keep looking!
  17. Hello, I'm new to the board and would like to know what you think. I am a 35-year old female looking for answers to issues that have plagued me for so long! - extreme fatigue, particularly severe right after a meal - most debilitating symptom - frequent loose stools - frequent need to pass stool: in the two hours since I've been awake, 4 times -...

Can anyone recommend a good gastroenterologist in NYC to make a celiac disease/gluten sensitivity diagnosis (or rule it out)? Thanks.

    ARCHIVED How Do I Start?

I have just begun suspecting gluten insensitivity/celiac disease for myriad health-related problems. I was wondering what sort of a doctor I should look for to help with the diagnosis. I live in NYC and will call the center at Columbia next week when they re-open. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
