  1. Welcome to the community. It's hard at first to take the news. But once you get used to the diet you realize, hey this isn't so bad. We can treat the disease by simply changing what we eat! No medications, no serious life altering illness, no surgery. I didn't get the biopsy because my doctor didn't feel it was necessary since my symptoms were resolved on...
  2. I called Perry's ice cream and they assured me they sanitize the facilities every 24 hours and the gluten-free flavors wouldn't be contaminated by non-gluten-free ones. I've been gluten-free for 11 months. Prior to healing I couldn't tolerate dairy, but for months I've been eating it without any issues. Peanut butter is fine. I'm not positive about chocolate...
  3. I keep a very detailed food log.. the only new thing I've introduced is Goldbaum's ice cream cones. After the first one I ate, I woke up at night from my stomach gurgling and couldn't go into work the next day I felt so ill. Well here I am at 2 in the morning with horrible gas and stomach pain, after another cone. Say it ain't so. I can't find a single...
  4. Your story really affected me because the start of it is eerily similar to mine. I got mono my senior year of high school and going into college was always tired and had GI issues. Luckily I was diagnosed last summer, only about a year into my symptoms. You will see your energy improve so much on a gluten-free diet. You'll be amazed.
  5. Oh that was almost a year ago now! Just was sharing my initial reaction.
  6. Let us know! Coffee is hard on your stomach. And I can sympathize with being so sick since I experienced the same thing. If the test comes back negative but you find a gluten free diet makes you feel better, I would stick with it!
  7. Loved reading the stories. I woke up to a phone call from the doctor saying "Do you want the good news or the bad news first?" The good news was my thyroid and other blood tests were good but the results came back positive for celiac. It was the strangest experience. At first I just wanted to break down but then I realized 1) I don't have to rely on medication...
  8. You're so fortunate to have found out despite not having any symptoms. Although, I wouldn't be surprised if you start to see improvements in your health/energy in the next few months. I didn't realize how tired I was before I went gluten free. I know it's overwhelming at first but it becomes second nature.
  9. Thanks minnesota, that's what I'm going for! Congrats to you too! Kareng, when I asked the Uno's waiter about the dressings, he said, "We can't guarantee that any of our dressings are gluten free." I'm still puzzled why they are listed on an exclusively gluten-free menu. Might need to look into it more to get a solid answer.
  10. I'll join you on that restaurant campaign! I hate going to restaurants where they have no idea what gluten is yet they point out on the menu what's gluten-free. Recently I went to Uno's (their gluten-free pizza is decent) and I asked about the dressings listed on their gluten-free menu. It turns out none of them are actually gluten-free. Uhh... Another...
  11. I have the same exact issue. I've been gluten-free for almost a year and I've never had such a good appetite. I've definitely put my focus on protein rather than carbs. I'm going to try to experiment with higher protein and fatty foods (healthy fat).
  12. If you're feeling good, then I would stick with it! Maybe you aren't sensitive to trace amounts. I think most people with an intolerance don't have issues with cross-contam or small amounts of gluten like people with celiac would.
  13. Thanks everyone for the warm welcome! RockChalkChic you are so right with the awareness of ingredients. Our pantries have never been more full of organic and fresh foods. I'm also really frustrated with the labeling. If it says modified food starch I cringe (if it's labeled gluten free I accept it as gluten-free). I actually just wrote to Congressman Richard...
  14. As someone who also struggled with keeping my weight on... PROTEIN is your new best friend. Fresh meat, fish, eggs, nuts. I'm not sure if you eat dairy but milk, cheese, yogurt, etc. Larabars are a great source of protein for a packaged snack. Stay away from soy for a while!
  15. It might be a good idea to get tested before going gluten free (if you're already on the diet it won't be an accurate test). My mom firmly believes my grandmother suffered from untreated celiac disease. She was never tested before she passed. After my diagnosis we realized it potentially could have been the cure for her many health issues. We have to realize...
  16. My diagnosis with celiac has been a life-changer. My senior year of high school I was always sick with you-name-it: incurable sinus infections, bronchitis, hand foot mouth virus, eczema breakout, and eventually mono which seemed to be the breaking point. I couldn't fight any illness. Continuing into my freshman year of college I was having terrible stomach...
