  1. Thanks Carrie. That makes total sense because coincidentally, I was glutened 3 weeks ago and have recovering since. And, these past few weeks my sugar sensitivity has been getting worse. I have been gluten-free for about 3 years, but still have most of the symptoms. I couldn't care less about the diet restrictions, its just the bloating, abdominal pain...
  2. I am becoming ridiculously sensitive to all kinds of sugar. From one marshmallow, to a banana, I feel like I am having a heart attack. I get shaky and my heart beats throughout my entire body....my breathing also increases. I feel like I just climbed up 10 flights of stairs...and it lasts ~30 minutes. I was wondering if anyone has tried a sugar free diet...
  3. Hi, I was wondering if any of you have any strategies after you get glutened. I know some people go on a clear liquid diet for a week and some just don't eat for 2 days. I have thought about cleansing, smoothie diet, etc. Any interesting strategies used?
  4. It is very common for Celiacs to gain weight after going gluten free. For some, it may be too many treats, but I would argue that for the majority, it is a metabolic problem. I found a really great article explaining this, which I will try to find....but the gist of it was that when your intestines are not absorbing, your body utilizes more muscle tissue...
  5. Hi, I am also from Canada, and have asked about the ingredients on OJ drinks. One of the ingredients is icing sugar (some health drink). So, just for this reason, I would stay away. Just knowing that they use icing sugar in some of their drinks makes me question about just HOW clean their machines are. Also remember that there are often teenagers working...
  6. Hi Spuette, Yes, I am not a skinny Celiac either. I actually gained weight when going gluten free (30lbs), and now controlling my weight is not something that is easy for me. I only learned about the "Overweight-Celiac" by reading posts on this forum. One thing to note is that it is possible to gain weight when eating little. If you are not consuming...
  7. Hi GC1 Glad to hear that you are doing better. I have a few questions about your last post. 1) Why did you eat corn cakes, but not rice cakes? 2) Why did you omit healthy oils (fish oil/flaxseed), but still eat low fat mayo and butter? Thanks, Heather
  8. Another point to add: When out, make him explain his needs for himself. I hated it when my mom would take over and tell the waitress my whole experience and what Celiac does, blah blah, blah. It is a lot more discrete if he does it himself- - - just to making life easier.
  9. Hi Ginny, When I was first diagnosed, I hated eating around other people and I hated explaining it to everyone. "Look at me everyone, I'm picky about everything I put in my mouth!". For some reason, that just drove me crazy regardless of who I was with. Fortunately I dealt with it over the years and I have no problem telling people. It is nice to inform...
  10. The only experience I have with rapid heart beats is after I eat anything with sugar. It doesn't have to even be concentrated sugar (candy), even the slightest bit forces me to lay down. Feels like I am having a heart attack, but usually subsides in 10-15 minutes. Doctors say there is nothing wrong and have crossed out Diabetes and even hypoglycemia. Whatever...
  11. Thanks for the advice. I actually don't think that I can tolerate anything with almonds in it too. I have noticed many times that I feel especially heavy and bloated after eating almond flour. I tried eating them once more this morning, and I feel and look like I am 5 months pregnant. My weight also went up by 6 lbs over night after eating one........heavy...
  12. Hi, Has anyone tried the zucchini muffin recipe from the SCDdiet website. I just tried baking them tonight and they are SOGGY!!. The tops are brown and look crisp, but the insides are totally wet. It felt like I was eating a lump of mix from the bowl. Any success with this recipe? I was thinking that maybe I should turn the temp down and increase...
  13. Hi Kelly! Your story sounds exactly like mine. I was diagnosed 3 years ago and have gained about 35 lbs. After going gluten free, nothing The gluten free diet wasn't working for me because I still felt like crap--bloated, gasy, D, unhappy. So, I tried the Specific carbohydrate diet (SCD) and I feel amazing! No bloating, no gas, lots of energy and 9...
  14. Kudos to Terri. Exercise is very important! Your weight might not be moving because your body has a window, where you can vary your calorie intake, but still maintain the same weight. For example, one day you might eat 1600 (low), and the next 1900, and your body will the scale won't move. Don't decrease your food intake too much either because this can...
  15. Alicia: Props to you! You should be very proud that you have figured out an optimal balance and have learned what your body likes. That often takes people a long time to do. Keep it up! Micheal: You can never be too old to get in better shape. I know a 57 year old female bodybuilder who has had 3 kids and started very overweight/boarder-line obese...
  16. First of all, I think one's mentality is important when starting any kind of lifestyle change. Your body is not the enemy. You have to work with it to find out what works best for you. If hardcore weights and running isn't your thing, consider rowing, swimming, biking, for example. The time of day is also important. Listen to your body and learn when you...
  17. Hi ladies! Making the commitment to try the SCD is a difficult one, especially when you feel you are already so restricted. But, there comes a point where you will try ANYTHING! There's always the question "What if this is the thing that works?". That's what convinced me. I'll use today as an example: I guess I should also say that I am not 100% SCD...
  18. Hi Mark Another point to add: You may want to be cautious about increasing your caloric intake just through fat. Fat supplies the greatest amount of energy (of the macronutrients), however given the side effects of your medication, this may result in greater accumulation of fat deposits. I would stick to more high-calorie-carbohydrates. Try incorporating...
  19. A brand of tuna that is safe is Clover Leaf. It is a pretty big line, so hopefully you will find it. I am also in Canada, so maybe we have different lines than in the US. Good luck! Heather
  20. Why is there soy in tuna? The canned tuna that I buy simply reads, Albacore tuna, water. I would maybe look for a different brand. I hope canned tuna/water is legal because I use it as a staple. : )
  21. Just to add, I was recently in Victoria and had a great experience with the restaurant Re-Bar. The staff were very helpful and double checked everything for me. I highly recommend it if in the area. H : )
  22. Hi Mark, I am also sensitive to beans and peanut butter. If you want to gain weight make sure you are in a positive energy balance (eat lots!). Maybe try to include more rice products, such as cream of rice (oatmeal) in the morning and rice bread for lunch. Also you may want to try almond butter. I have found that I am crazy sensitive to peanut butter...
  23. Hi Mariann, That’s too bad that he so stubborn. It may really benefit him. How long has he been in bodybuilding for? I’d maybe re-evaluate the diet, and maybe switch to more calorie dense foods. Depending on his current condition and the number of weeks out from the show, it is possible to increase calories. My trainer who diets me consumes 7000+ cal...
