  1. Thanks for responses - it seems fiber is a real problem - had same lunch yesterday and today (tuna/mayo on potato chips, H2O) yesterday OK, except today I had 3 gluten-free cookies (MI-DEL) w/approx 3g/12% RDA fiber) and had problems a couple hours later, same @ dinner time/ probs later. Guess I'm just gonna have to be real careful for a while.

  3. gluten-free breads seem to bother me if I eat them at breakfast or lunch, not so much at dinner. I've been trying two commercially prepared ones from Trader Joe's, and a bread mix (Bob's Red Mill gluten-free Bread Mix) from Whole Foods. They aren't very high fiber content, but all three contain guar gum which I've heard can be a problem. Anyone have any...
  4. Hello - I have a question about cornmeal. I seem to be doing OK with rice and potatos, but cornbread seems to bother, which is bad cause I really like it. Would cornmeal bother due to fiber, or could there be something else about corn that bothers people? I'm careful to only use cornmeal with no flour added, 2 brands. One of the reasons I ask is...
  5. Alexa - you said that an allergists test for gluten came back negative; and that after the scope exams a biopsy did not show celiac disease, but you were told the damage was by gluten intolerance. Can you describe how the Dr. reached that conclusion. Yours is one of the scariest postings I've read; I'm trying to figure out how I should proceed.
  6. You mentiond styes and thinning hair - soaps and alkaline H2O drive my skin crazy - I've had similar problems - no reason why celiac disease can't affect skin - I gave up shampoos 8-9 mo. ago (keep hair short, minimal water exposure, buff with dry towel -looks ok, feels ok). Hair more dense, bald spot shrank a little, skin improving. Since gluten-free 2...
  7. Thanks for responses - this has been perplexing for some time - soon as I get the scanner working I'm going to print up a batch of $100's and find a doctors(s). Thanks
  8. You asked how long before you can see/feel results - I began feeling better within a few days, not great, but better. I've had a few blunders in the past two months but not many - I feel much better physically, and it's difficult to describe but mentally things are much more calm. What I found: The gluten-free flours/breads do take a little adjusting...

    ARCHIVED "castaway"

No replies needed or wanted - just want to say something - Think of the Tom Hanks movie entitled "Castaway" Think of him somehow crossing paths with the ship I found a really smart dietician I found this website Now I'm on the ship P.B. Lord, I GET MY LIFE BACK IN 'O4
  11. I'm trying to decide whether to do the Enteron test / consultation - I was wondering how much those endoscopic exams cost so I can compare costs - I don't think I'm willing to do a gluten challenge (gluten-free 2 mo now). I know costs vary location to location - any ballpark $number will help. No insurance, not working - I really have to watch costs ...
  12. I've been trying to adhere to a gluten-free for two months after it was suggested by a dietician. The information on this site is just great, I've learned so much and it will be a great help. I think I'm going to do the Enteron tests and see what they show - I think I'd slug a doctor who wanted me to go back on gluten so they could tell for sure, I've felt...
  13. I have had problems with just awful longitudinal splits (directional w/finger) in my fingernails, big chunks breaking off - before I went gluten-free As the fingernail grows, the split ends about 1/4 inch beyond the "cuticle", which I think coincides with my going gluten free - The more I read on this topic the more I wonder? Since gluten-free...
  14. re: Skin problems I have been having terrible skin problems for years and I wonder if they are related to celiac disease - 1 - I have developed an extreme sensitivity to anything alkalai, such as soaps, this carries over to the water supply here, ph was at 8.2 at end of summer, 7.5 in the fall, I only use Poland spring water on my face, neck, and scalp...
  15. to: DLayman - thanks for info, I'm rounding up all I can - and I'll try about anything at this point.
  16. re: other family members - an uncle (mom's side) who passed away a couple years ago had a lot of gastro probs - she wonders if he had celiac disease - haven't heard of other people up there with the problem though. I am the last male of my father's side of the family, no children, only relatives I know of are the wife of his half brother and son, daughter...
  17. To gf4life, thank you for your response - it was really helpful. There were no tests prior to my dieticians suggestion, I've been working with her for 18 mo. or longer trying to figure out what was wrong with me. Several GPs just told me it was stress/IBS - no tests. Had a bout of diverticulitis in '95, told him of problems, I think he just kind of ignored...
  18. I could really use some advice if anyone has a little time. A dietician suggested I try a gluten free diet in Nov and it has made a huge difference in life, but now I do not know what to do. 1. It appears going off gluten prior to testing complicates things 2. It appears (from reading) they might want to put me back on gluten and bring symptoms...
