  1. Happy birthday and may God bless you today!

  2. I was tested for celiac, it was negative, but I suspect I may have a gluten sensitivity or intolerance, mostly because I am seeing a neurologist for spinocerebellar ataxia, and there is such a strong connection between gluten and ataxia. Anyhow, I went gluten-free for maybe a month, and I was reading about the disease and diet meanwhile (Wheat Free, Worry...
  3. [quote name='Matilda' date='Apr 30 2006, 07: Thanks for the reply and links, Matilda. The print-outs will be very helpful to take to my neurologist at UCLA. I have no history of celiac disease, or any kind of allergy or intolerance in my family, and I have been tall and skinny all my life, so my doctor might see any further gluten testing pointless. ...
  4. I was tested negative for celiac disease by Prometheus, but I wonder if I might have gluten intolerance. What is the best way to find out? Thanks. My only symptom is neurological.

    ARCHIVED Fast Food

It was very helpful (and fun!!) for me to make a safety book of restaurant menus. I printed the info from the internet, and put those pages into protective plastic sleeves and put all the info. together in a small binder. McDonald's has a lot of safe food, and is a user-friendly site, as is Outback. Since going gluten-free, my big addiction is protein...

    ARCHIVED Weight Gain

What are the advantages to that diet? I don't have Celiac, but suspect some intolerance or sensitivity, and I've always been underweight and am really trying to change that. Thanks.

    ARCHIVED Yay!

    I'm glad.

    ARCHIVED Yay!

In some small and mysterious way, I think this will help me cope with the gluten-free life.
  9. Karina, I've always been too thin also, and I really started to gain weight doing weight-bearing exercise. The best thing is to do a small number of repititions with as high of a weight as you can. Your muscles will adapt, and begin to grow quickly. And Remember that muscle weighs more than fat.

    ARCHIVED Weight Loss

Jenn2005, I've been snacking like crazy, and putting a lot of honey in my whole milk plain yogurt and having a banana in my 4% milkfat cottage cheese. Plus, my pantry is "choc" full of chocolate in just about every form.

    ARCHIVED Weight Loss

Is it normal to lose weight on a gluten-free diet? I've been gluten-free for about three weeks, and my scale tells me I've lost 6 lbs. How do I get those lbs. back? If I really did lose them, I need to find them!
  12. Are tortillas OK?
  13. There will be an episode of Mystery Diagnosis on The Learning Channel dealing with Celiac this week. (I think it's Thursday, but I'm not sure.)
  14. I've found my gluten-free bread from Trader Joe's to be useful in several ways. Have you ever been motivated to do a strength-training workout only to find that you've misplaced your weights? Just go to the fridge and get your bread! Have you stepped out for a leisurely walk and tripped because of a missing brick that was perhaps stolen in the...
  15. The ingredients are pretty much the recipes-whatever's in your cupboard. Measuring is against my religion.
  16. Wow!!! So many answers to questions I didn't even know I had! I'm going to write to my neurologist right away to inform her of the undeniable link between ataxia and gluten. I tested negative for celiac disease, but have been reading "Wheat-free, Worry-free" to search for answers to some questions. I've just re-started a gluten-free diet (after a breif...
  17. I didn't know it, but two of my favorite recipes are gluten-free. Tortilla Chip Casserole with browned beef, canned toms., canned olives, sour cream, cottage cheese, canned corn and canned chiles (or Mexicorn), monterey jack cheese and tort. chips. The other is fondly known as Burrito Guts, and includes browned beef, canned kidney beans (or pinto, maybe...
  18. I also have ataxia. I've read of a study where large doses of B12 improved the conditions of some patients. I've also been told that the disease is progressive, and the best you can do is to slow down that progression. CoQ10 was found to do just that. (Just at the moment, I'm not exactly sure which vitamin went with which study, but I do know for sure...
  19. Is ataxia an autoimmune disease?
  20. I have no GI symptoms either, just an autoimmune disease and a recommendation to go gluten-free. I'm glad to hear you can eat out. My husband and I do often (I hate to cook and am horrible at it.) Good luck with the bread. I just went to the store and bought some today. I've tried it before. I don't want to discourage you, so I'll say it wasn't bad...
  21. Your'e all making this very hard! What it all boils down to is that I need to go 100% gluten-free, assuming I have a gluten sensitivity. Is that correct?
  22. I can only say a hearty "ditto" and "amen!" to what I've read! I've been accused of being anorexic so many times, I can't even keep track. The number of people who want to give me their weight, and wish they had my problem just can't possibly find it anywhere in their imaginations that a person might not take pleasure in being very, very thin. My point...
  23. Thanks, Kaiti. I didn't know that.
