Celiac reactions do not activate the IgE and mast cell pathway that is common in allergies. It is an autoimmune reaction involving T-cells and cytokine release. No histamine is involved and Benadryl is an antihistamine. It would be helpful if you have a true allergy though.

This article explains the immunology of celiac disease:

IV Benadryl is use to treat migraines in hospital settings. Migraines are not a histamine response, but a muscle spasm. The idea is that the Benadryl calms the patient and allows the muscle spasms to stop. I do not know if this is what happens in my gut when I take Benadryl after an accidental gluten-ing, but I know that it helps, and that is all that matters to me.

By the way, I DO NOT suggest using Benadryl as a way to eat gluten on purpose. I only use it as an aid to feeling better after I get sick.

Recently i was using up to a bottle of benadryl every other day, until I went completely gluten free,,soy free, milk and dairy free and a host of other things. Is this normal and do we have to carry it with us at all times?

While in CA last month I was glutened so badly at a restaurant in a fancy hotel that I thought I was going to have to go to the hospital. I asked the front dest if they had any benadryl and they practically threw it at me (perhaps trying to prevent a lawsuit). I usually keep a couple of 25 mg benadryls in my purse at all time. When I get glutened I take them and drink a 20 ounce coke. I have found that for ME, the benadryl, along with a chewable pepto if I have one, helps settle my stomach. And I get really lightheaded and have passed out before from the drastic drop in blood sugar and loss of fluids from major diarrhea, so drinking the coke gives me a boost until I can get home and rest. It is not a cure, but it works for me. My thought process is that benadryl works as an antihistamine. While Celiac Disease is not an "allergy", there is still a sestemic response, much like an allergy. Diphendydramine has been shown to relieve migranes, settle stomaches, reduce swelling, reduce redness, and stop many other allergy symptoms. I believe this is why it helps when I am glutened too.

We have some new friends that are taking us out to eat at a Chinese restaurant of their choice (I think they are friends or family of the owner). I'm recently diagnosed gluten intolerant, and still trying to learn what is safe to eat or not. Is there anything on the menu that would be inherently gluten-free, or would I be better off asking for steamed vegetables and rice, and bringing my own soy sauce? I was thinking of sweet and sour chicken or something like that, but am open to other suggestions.

Next time we eat out with this other couple, it will be at a restaurant where I know I've had good luck before!

Hi! I am going to go with no here, b/c if it is something that does not have soy sauce in the cooking phase, then it is breaded, or searved with noodles. I have been to one place (besided PF Changs) that did gluten-free, and they didn't do a very good job. They got confused a lot, and made a lot of mistakes. And this wasn't just one visit, this was a place that said "we can do gluten-free!" so I went several times, hoping they could figure it out. I would say CAUTION and only go if you know the people or feel super comfortable talking with them AT LEGNTH! But if it were me, I would pass......

  5. I did some research and found out that wines wouldn't "contain" gluten, but might be filtered through grains to eliminate sediment (for white wines). Some are filtered through coal, some through grains, some through screens, but not metal, because that changes the wines aging process. The cheaper ones use grain, but even that is rare now. That might explain why SOME people get sick SOME of the time.

  6. I am new to this whole thing, so I am still putting all of the bit together, but I do get VERY HOT at night. I sleep with one of those tornado fans on the nightstand blowing right on me, and I still wake up really really hot, like I am burning up from the inside. I am only 23, and have no kids or anything like that. I had no idea that this might be a celiac symptom. Thanks for sharing guys!!!! TiffJake

Hugh, that's interesting...  I've never had full-blown sweats perhaps, but I always get hot at night, while my husband is on the other side with a heated blanket.  I don't get hot during the day though...its weird.
