  1. This is the gluten alert Clan Thompson sent to it's subscribers on June 6th:

    Hello,

Food SmartList subscribers should note that Carnation Instant Breakfast - Ready to Drink (strawberry) is no longer gluten free. This product now contains barley.

Also...we placed another call to Duncan Hines regarding their Creamy Homestyle Frosting since the labels no longer list barley malt as an ingredient. The company now says these frostings are gluten free. They added that while there are no gluten containing ingredients in the product, there is a possibility of cross contamination since they are not made on dedicated lines.

    Best wishes,

    Lani K. Thompson

So floridanative and I got our wires crossed about the strawberry since the carnation stuff was in the same message. :P

  2. "I hate it when people point out my weight. Today, I bought a whole bunch of food at the grocery store, and one of they girls behind me wispered to her friend, "I don't know why she's buying all that food, it's not like she's going to eat it" and the other girl made a comment about how gross I looked. I wanted to tell them that I don't want to look like this, but instead I had to fight back tears. I am getting tougher though"

I was in my work cafeteria using the microwave to heat up my lunch and one of the women who works in the cafe yelled across the room (with several people in the room eating lunch) "Wow, she actually eats!"

I was so embarrassed and upset. Just because I do not eat food from the cafeteria and I am thin, she assumed that I have some kind of eating disorder. And whenever I am cold I get the usual "well, if you put some meat on your bones!"...that one angers me the most!

that would drive me nuts. I know I'll NEVER have that problem, since I run on the opposite end of weight problems, but if I were in that situation, I would probably snap! I would likely say something like, "listen lady, I have a disease that makes me this thin, and it'll kill me if I'm not careful. I could eat half a cow and a field of corn for lunch and I wouldn't put on a pound because I can't absorb nutrients. I CAN"t put meat on my bones, I'd love to, but I can't. I'd rather be pudgy then have to spend my free time in a bathroom, writhing in pain, or being bloated to the size of a blimp. Comments like that are really hurtful. I don't come up to you while you're at your desk and yell so that everyone can hear 'wow! she actually stopped eating!'"

Again, I'd never have that problem, but thanks for the perspective. Now I know that it sucks just as bad as being ridiculed for being overweight :)

  3. unidentified starch - must be identified now by law

modified food starch - unless it's Kraft or another trusted company and you know it's safe, it's a toss up. Usually it's corn, but you have to call.

hydrolyzed vegetable protein - HVP - usually gluten

hydrolyzed plant protein - HPP - usually gluten

texturized vegetable protein - TVP - usually gluten

binders - has to be identified by law if has a top 8 allergen

fillers - has to be identified by law if it has a top 8 allergen

    excipients - call and check

    extenders - call and check

malt - unless it says rice malt, it's ALWAYS gluten (barley)

the chance doesn't matter. unless you know for sure that it does NOT contain gluten, you don't eat it. period.

    THIS IS 100% TRUE

  4. I had a great experience at Outback Steakhouse in Bedford, NH over the weekend. It was the first time i've ever gone to a chain restaurant and ordered off the menu with any sort of confidence. The waitress was very knowledgable and helpful. I have been to Applebees and always have the same thing - Santa Fe Chicken salad, never any problems, but how many salads can one eat while on vacation! Ditto McD's grilled bacon ranch salad.

Are there any Cape Cod locals out there with dining suggestions? How about stores that sell gluten-free groceries? I'll be there for a week, so I'm bound to run out or forget something!

    Thanks in advance! :)

Eep! Just so you know, the grilled chicken at McDonald's is NOT gluten-free! Neither is the grilled chicken at Applebee's, it comes pre-marinated in soy sauce

  5. Found one Jenvan posted a while back:

Isn't there a recipe for whipped topping with Vance's??

Found it. Never had it...but heard good things are the icecream recipe using Vance's:

    Whipped topping

    ¾ cup very cold DariFree

    ½ cup granulated sugar

    1 teaspoon gelatin

    2 tablespoons water

Place medium sized stainless steel bowl & electric beaters in the freezer for at least an hour.

Combine gelatin with water and microwave for 20 seconds.

Remove softened gelatin and allow to cool to room temperature.

Combine cold DariFree and sugar in mixing bowl, and slowly add gelatin.

Beat on high speed until it forms stiff peaks.

    Use immediately.

  6. So there has been a lot of debate about distilled liquor and gluten-free etc. It is not my intention to start another one. For the purposes of this thread, we're going to assume that distilled liquor is gluten-free with the exception of those that add some of the mash back in.

    That said...

Other than the obvious beer and malted beverages (such as Smirnoff Ice stateside),

    What liquor isn't gluten-free?

  7. Duncan Hines has now reinvestigated their Creamy Homestyle frostings (canned) and they are gluten free...excpet for maybe strawberry for some reason. I'm going to try Jerseyangels recipe for frosting one day though - I think even I can do that one.

I read that too, for some reason they put barley in the strawberry flavor. I don't know about you, but I've never run across a strawberry that needed barley to enhance the flavor <_<

    Stupid artificial flavorings

  8. No, I'm not alone... I have Tony, my husband and my buddy, and I have a 100 pound Collie and my little kitty AND a set of stuborn parents and inlaws that live close.

I don't know the exact miles but we are right on the line for evacuation.

Wow - don't you wish you were alone

Just kidding. Chin up! Break out the playing cards!

  9. I'm not offended at people's dislike for WalMart. My university had the Walton College of Business, Bud Walton Arena, Walton Hall, Walton Honor's College, the list goes on and on. Of course, we also have the Tyson school for poultry science (for real), Tyson track center, and they take care of "Tusk" (the mascot). As you can imagine, in NW Arkansas, you have no choice to shop at Sam's club and WalMart and buy Tyson chicken  It sucked. I spend so much money there in college I probably paid for several fellowships that weren't mine and smartboards in the business school I wasn't in <_< I'm not the biggest Wally World fan.

Now that I'm in hippy granola Austin, I have options :)

I went to Costco during lunch and I liked the products they had. Anyplace I can get Pacific Organic chicken broth and shelf-stable organic milk, I'm in! Their produce was also MUCH better. I'm going to have to talk my Wal-Mart lovin' DH into a costco membership...

(I like BJ's too, but we don't have any down here. I think that's a NE thing)

  10. your family sounds like mine :( they used to criticize the smell and texture of my girls' gluten free foods, and then try to say things to them like "mommy is so mean not letting you have some cookies" and "I couldn't eat that yucky food you do, it would make me want to die"

I sat them down and told them straight out, that they need to shut up or stay away, and well, they didn't so we don't see them any more.

It annoys me to no end how rude people can be to my kids (and me too now) about our medical condition, they wouldn't do that to anyone else. You don't see people walking up to a disabled person saying "wow, I don't like your wheelchair, it's so bulky, I couldn't do that, your life sucks" yet, they do the same type of stuff to us.

I doubt that I handled it in the best way possible, but I was forever living in fear of them sneeking my kids food. It's easier (and healthier) for us not to be around them.

You should probably have a talk with them though, it's possible they don't understand how serious that celiac is. (my family does, and still did it though, even though half of them are diagnosed, they don't follow the diet :( and resent us because we do)

Well said on the wheelchair bit! I hate it when people say, "well if you've been so sick for so long, why weren't you in bed all the time? why don't you look sick." Even if they've witnessed you go to the emergency room or be writhing in pain in bed. So far I've lost one friend to that line of thinking, the rest have been really supportive.

It's true that you can't pick your family, and no matter what, they'll always be your family. However there is a reason that saying exists. You can't pick your family, but you can choose your interactions with them. Negative people are a poision in your life, regardless of kinship. It sounds mean and heartless, but you know what, making yourself available as a punching bag does nothing for anyone, except make the family member in question feel more important. I applaud you for protecting yourself and your child. :)

  11. Sorry you felt cruddy :(

All I can say is eat as much gluten as you can between now and your test!!! Keep in mind that you may never be able to eat gluten again so you have to get in all your mc nuggets and scones in while you can! That should help you stay the course of your pre-testing gluten binge.

Also, I reccommend cruise bagels from room service, I must have eaten them every day on my cruise last summer :P I'm jealous, cruises are awesome!
