  1. Sorry, I wish we had one close to use as well. We just have Baskin Robins. Dollywood has Mini Melts, does anyone know if these are gluten-free?

This may be a dumb question but...do scoop shops wash the scoops in between scooping the different flavors?

They will if you ask them to. The guy at the B&J shop I was at yesterday went and even sterilized one.

  2. Wendy's has a gluten-free menu, and baked potatoes are on it!

    Open Original Shared Link

Their chili is also gluten-free, some of their salads are safe. Make them change their gloves before handling your potato, though!

  3. Ack, you're having a baby! Congratulations! I'm so psyched for you!!!

As far as IV drugs are concerned, I would bet money that they are gluten-free, because the only reason gluten is in meds is to hold it together, and I can't imagine them injecting whole gluten proteins into your arm. Just worry about the oral meds.

And have someone bring you takeout or something, hospital food is gross and dangerous!

  4. Yeah, I'm not doing that again! The nurse said that I didn't "metabolize the mold pollen" from the allergy testing and that's why the site got so infected (I was extremely allergic to that one). Although, I read that cellulitis is caused by a staph infection...

Anyhoo, since I've been having the digesting glass pain all this week, the prednisone weight is dropping off nicely <_<

Although I continue to retain a ridiculous amount of water.

  5. Ouch! Sorry your insurance wouldn't cover it! My insurance covered all but $2 of it (I have really good insurance), but what you're being charged is about what my insurance got charged.

Personally, I don't think the appointment would be worth it at this point. Your first flag is that his nurse said "celiac is a rare disease", which tells me they probably have outdated information. Even my doctor told me I'd find out more doing research on my own than what she or a nutritionist could tell me. I would say that you research it yourself and then make an appointment for a follow-up 3-6 months down the line to see how you are progressing.

    Just my take.

  6. Free cone day is coming! April 25th is the day that Ben & Jerry's Scoop Shops give out a free scoop of ice cream, yum! You can go to their website Open Original Shared Link and see if you have one near you!

They don't keep a listing of what flavors are gluten-free, but they do clearly label and don't hide gluteny ingredients.

I went to a scoop shop yesterday and had no problems (except the lactose part, but it was worth it :P ) and they gave me a really recent ingredient listing for all of their flavors.

If anyone is curious about their favorite flavor, I can post the ingredients!

Remember April 25th (for those that can have ice cream)!!!!!

  7. I've had more than one server say, "white bread isn't made from wheat, right?"

I also had a server swear up and down that steamed rice (rice, water) had gluten.

I, luckily, have not had many bad experiences.

One funny one was at a McDonald's in BFE, Texas. I ordered a burger with everything on it except the bun, and went through the spiel about the bread can't touch the meat, etc. All she could do was exclaim in a voice not meant for indoors, "YOU DON'T WANT NO BUN?!?!" She was baffled. Apparently atkins has not yet reached that part of the world. :P

  8. Oh I had bo idea that Butterfingers were even something I could endulge in again! You have made my day! Please, if there are any other "real" foods that I can consume, let me know, I'm starving!

    Sis

3 musketeers, peeps, and milky way midnight are all gluten-free (regular milky way is not)

Hershey will always label gluten-containing ingredients

Kisses are gluten-free, and so are reeses peanut butter cups

It's very easy to get enough junk food on this diet ;)

  9. Thanks, but I guess im kinda worried about eating things and having a reaction, that kinda freaks me out! Ive never had a problem with food allergies before.....The recent thing me allergist told me is that he can do a scratch test with the actual fruit!! have u ever heard of this before, I have to bring in, lets say a fresh strawberry, and he would do the scratch test using that fresh fruit! i dont know about him, but i dont feel like being pricked anymore!

Its bad enough that im picky about my celiac and not eating wheat, but I / we really dont need to worry about more foods! Did you all find that you had food allergy problems after DX. or did you have previous allergies too?

Why not scratch with the real food? All the serum is that they prick you with is concentrated allergen. The skin pricks are really unreliable for foods, you get a lot of false positives AND false negatives. Seriously, the elimination diet is the thing to do, but if you're worried about a reaction, make sure your allergist knows you're doing an elimination diet. Maybe he can prescribe you an epi-pen just in case, and make sure you don't add new foods while you're alone!

  10. I think my son's allergist said that food allergy testing is only right about 30% of the time - but DO NOT QUOTE me!!!

Mine said something along the same lines, and that the IgE blood testing is more accurate than the scratch test, but they weren't 100% accurate at all.

He said the only way to know for sure is to do an elimination diet. To quote him, "the proof is in the pudding". Or clams, or crabs, or nuts, or wheat....

  11. Someone tell me how to convince my husband that the Nuva Ring is a good thing? I don't start it until Sunday, but he doesn't think it'll work, or that he'll feel it, or that it will fall out. I've explained it to him six ways from Sunday and he's still against it. I was thinking of putting it in a few days early and then, erm, proving he couldn't feel it, and tell him after the fact. I'm switching from Kariva, so I don't have to use a backup.

You know the irony of him not thinking the little plastic ring that gives off medication through the skin? His area of research is POLYMERS AND DRUG DELIVERY!!! He studies how medicines get in and out of plastic. I thought he'd think it was pretty cool.

  12. I'm a bridesmaid in a wedding next month, and the bride is a close friend and is very concerned about gluten (she even surprised me with a cookbook!), but I'm not planning on eating at the reception.

I'm going to nurse a boost before the wedding and sneak one after the ceremony. I could techinically call the place the reception is going to be, and I know they can accomodate, but this restaurant has given me food poisioning in the past, so I'm not jumping up and down to be able to eat.

I can always eat after the wedding, and it's my responsibility to the bride to make sure I'm feeling well through the entire event.

    Yay boost!
