  1. Thank you all for the helpful tips... I'll definitely try some of the things that have been suggested here. I'm also starting to think that I'm becoming more sensitive to gluten now than I was in the past. I've read that this often happens, where you react to it more after you've been off it a while. Right? It's just that for a while (maybe a couple months...
  2. Is the painful area also swollen? When my thyroid gets a little enlarged, that's usually a sure sign for me that my thyroid levels are low (my doctor says this is because the gland is working harder trying to produce enough hormones and therefore swells a bit)... but mine doesn't usually hurt at all. I do get the "lump in my throat" feeling though. Either...
  3. So right now I'm in between living arrangements... just moved from South Carolina back to my home town in Pennsylvania. I'm going to have my own house here, but it won't be ready for me to move into until sometime next month at the earliest. SO until then I'm living back home with the rest of my non-gluten-free family. I wasn't really too worried about...
  4. I'm sorry for asking another Enterolab question! I've read a bunch of past questions & replies and I'm still confused. I was diagnosed with celiac in Feb '06 (not through Enterolab) and I finally talked my mom into getting tested as well (she has a history of autoimmune thyroid problems like I do)... I told her about Enterolab since I had read a...
  5. So I'm still working on getting to the bottom of my random assortment of weird symptoms... At the moment I'm still staying away from dairy (in addition to being gluten-free of course) but I'm still exploring the possibility of other triggers too. Anyway, I've started noticing that eggs seem to have a weird effect on me. I've noticed this for a while, actually...
  6. oh my goodness, that's so great! i've just kinda been avoiding restaurants lately because i don't like having to go through the whole educating-the-waiters routine. i'll definitely have to try those places though! ~Sara~
  7. Did either of you guys try calling the phone numbers listed for those contacts? I just thought maybe I'd try those next if the email address didn't work... And just to introduce myself a lil bit... I'm Sara, I'm 25 and just graduated from grad school at USC.
  8. Hmmm... I've heard of the "detox" period for gluten, but I wasn't sure if that applied to dairy too. Honestly, I didn't feel sick at all after quitting gluten, so this definitely isn't what I expected with dairy.
  9. UGH. Okay, I'm seriously sooo frustrated right now. I quit dairy about 2 weeks ago, and now after over a week of feeling wonderful, having perfectly clear skin, etc., everything seems to be falling apart again. For the past couple days my skin has started breaking out again, I have little red bumps all over my shoulders and back (waaay worse than before I...
  10. hey I'm in Columbia too, I had no idea there was a support group here... Could you PM me about it too? I do a lot of shopping at Earthfare, but yes it gets a bit expensive. I just recently heard of a place called 14 Carrot Whole Foods in Lexington (www.14carrot.net). It looks like it might be a good possibility, although I guess it would be a little out...
  11. Have you found that your kitties gained weight at all with California Natural? I started getting that for my cat after doing a bunch of research on dog & cat foods when I got my puppy... After about 2 months though, my cat had gained a TON of weight, she's literally turned into a little butterball overnight! I even took her to the vet and they said it...
  12. I just had to share this... A week or so ago, one of the ladies in my office had a birthday, so they got a cake for her and everyone stood around eating cake, except for me of course. It didn't bother me toooo much, but they all felt bad that I couldn't have any. (It's a small office and everyone knows about my food issues!) Well yesterday we were celebrating...
  13. Where do you guys find the Earth Balance stuff? I looked for it at the natural foods store that I always go to, and I didn't see it. They have a pretty good selection of most things. Oh and what's the deal with Smart Balance? I thought I had read that it had casein, but I was looking at it when I was at the store last night, and for the life of me I couldn...
  14. yes I know the Almond Breeze has soy... I'm not cutting out soy entirely right now because it doesn't really seem to bother me. I've just read a lot on this forum about it being a good idea to limit soy, so I'm assuming it would be a bad idea to replace lots of things with soy. I tried the Pacific brand of almond milk too and thought it was kinda icky...
  15. Thanks for the tips... I guess one of my main problems is that I'm really not a big meat eater at all. I honestly wouldn't mind giving it up altogether, except that meat seems to be one of the only things I can eat now! I do eat a ton of rice and fruits & veggies... I'm just getting tired of all the same things and need some variety, but I feel like...
  16. Brief history: I stopped eating gluten in February 2006, felt wonderful for several weeks, then about three months ago things started going downhill again... constant 'heart flutters', skin breakouts, headaches, tired all the time, etc. Based on the recommendations of several people on this forum, I finally decided to try going casein free too, to see if...
  17. Has anyone here had any luck finding out if Swanson vitamins are gluten free? I order ALL my vitamins from them, and I wrote to them a couple months ago (right after my diagnosis) asking about gluten... their response was basically that they choose not to specify whether or not their products have gluten, because if they started identifying gluten, they'd...
  18. okay big update... I'm more confused than ever now. This past Friday I forgot to take my vitamins, and for the first time in a couple weeks I had NO heart flutters (skipped beats) while I was trying to fall asleep. This is usually when I notice it a whole lot, and it keeps me awake because it's so annoying. Anyway, forgot vitamins = no heart flutters...
  19. I'm pretty sure these issues aren't related to my thyroid. To go into a little more detail about my thyroid situation... When I was first diagnosed with Graves, I was not severely hyperthyroid, but enough that it was causing symptoms (racing heart, tremors, etc). My original endocrinologist (who I'm convinced had no idea what he was doing) put me on a...
  20. I'm not totally sure I know what you mean here... are you saying that I might be getting too much out of my vitamin now? Or that the sources of the vitamins in the multiple aren't good for me?
  21. Short history: diagnosed with graves disease (autoimmune hyperthyroid) in November 2004, then went back and forth between hyperthyroid and hypothyroid for the next year... diagnosed with celiac in february 2006, been gluten free ever since. When I first went off gluten, things seemed to change (for the better!) very quickly... My skin cleared up beautifully...
  22. I've always had issues with dizziness off and on, and my current doctor (the GOOD one who finally diagnosed me with celiac) says it has something to do with my adrenal function, which was having problems because of my inability to absorb the right things because of the celiac. (She explained it in a very long and complicated way, sorry I don't remember all...
  23. Thank you all for your responses... I kept thinking that additional allergies would be a likely explanation for this, but I'm kinda in denial. I've already had to stop eating so many things because of gluten, I really hope I don't have to add more things to that list. I do plan to see a doctor if I can't figure this out on my own... It's just so annoying...
  24. To begin with, I've been gluten free since February... prior to that I had all kinds of fun stuff, including Graves disease (hyperthyroid). Before I was diagnosed with Graves, heart symptoms were my main issue -- my heart would race like crazy, etc. Then I went hypothyroid for a while due to overmedication, and during that time I would always have chest pains...
  25. Just to reiterate... DEFINITELY get her thyroid checked! I had awful heart issues for months before I finally was diagnosed with Graves disease. My heart would race like crazy and I also had a lot of chest pains. They did all kinds of heart tests on me and never wanted to check my thyroid because I was "so young and healthy." My mom finally insisted on it...
