  1. Thanks for the info. So, I guess we may never know unless one of us start to show symptoms (if it gets turned on for some reason). We are both going to get our blood levels tested annually as well, in case something changes. I keep hearing so much about false negatives as well--it makes me paranoid. I tried reading something that explained the genetics...
  2. I have a question in relation to something someone wrote, but I can't figure out how to use the "quote" option (not very computer savvy ). I believe it was Nisla (?). You mentioned that in order for a child to have it, that one of the parents must have it too. I'm also fairly new to this whole thing, and I have to admit that the genetic aspect of it...
  3. Our son tested positive for celiac in May and it was recommended that our oldest daughter get tested (youngest daughter is only 2, so we will test her when the outcome is more reliable). Our daughter also tested positive, and had absolutely no classic symptoms. It's definitely a good idea. In hindsight, we can see some of the subtle symptoms that she had...
  4. That's great! It's so good to hear that things can work out positively. We sent our two kids to camp this summer too (both with celiac) and I, too, did a lot of communicating with staff personnel in regard to the diet etc. It appeared that they understood fully and I sent a covering letter addressing the specific needs as well. I thought that I did all...
  5. My daughters BM's were perfectly normal until she was about 9 or 10 months old. I was still breastfeeding, but she started solids at about 6.5 months. After we stopped breastfeeding, at about a year, the grainy poops continued. She still drinks plenty of milk, but after going gluten-free things improved considerably.
  6. Hi there. I've posted about this exact problem with my little girl (now 21 months old) and didn't really get anywhere with it. I'm so glad to see it come up again and I am literally on the edge of my seat to find out what comes back from the Enterolab doc. Both of my older kids (12 and 10yrs) have been recently diagnosed, but when I had my babe's blood...
  7. Thanks for the info. I had no idea that she would have to be back on gluten for such a long time in order for the test to make sense. I imagined it would only be a couple of weeks or a month. I checked out that link to enterolab, and it looks very interesting. The prices aren't even as bad as I thought they'd be (even with the Canadian exchange). Definitely...
  8. Thanks for all your input. We are just starting the gluten-free diet with our daughter today; she just returned from camp. I'm anticipating some difficult times ahead, but, yes, at least they'll both be experiencing the same things. Who knows, maybe it'll even make them closer--like a special bond (to try to put a positive spin on things . Ursula--in...
  9. It's been a while since I posted, but I just had to now. After my 12 year old son was diagnosed by biopsy in May, I had the blood test and so did my 10 year old daughter. I can hardly believe it myself, but she came back positive. I came back negative. It's crazy--my son had virtually no symptoms, and my daughter doesn't either. I know her chances are...
  10. We discovered my son's celiac disease quite by accident. I had heard about it years before from a friend who thought her daughter had it, and it always stuck in my mind because of his stomach aches (which he hadn't had in about a year at that time). I guess I mentally filed it away at the time. Then a year and a half ago I had a baby girl and a while after...
  11. Hi there. My son (he'll be 13 in October) was also just diagnosed a month ago, and also has no symptoms except for short stature. He used to have terrible stomach aches a couple of times a month from about the age of 4 until about 9, and then they went away and I never really thought about them since. I found out that that can happen (the symptoms can...
  12. Hi there. My son (12) was just diagnosed with celiac. He grinds his teeth so badly that I'm surprised he has any teeth If he sleeps in the same room as us, it is not a very restful night. Is that a celiac symptom?? I've never heard that one before, but there are new things that I am learning about celiac on a daily basis (everytime I'm on this board...
  13. I'm sorry that I will probably be of no real help to you, but I had to write anyhow. My daughter (19 months old) has had "sandy" poops for about 10 months. I have spoken to my doctor and pediatrician, I have spoken to the health unit, I called (on numerous occasions) dial-a-dietician, and nobody has a clue what the cause is. As a matter of fact, the response...
  14. Thanks for the help. I think I'm slowly getting the hang of this. It's all very mystifiying to us computer illiterate folks . Thanx again and hopefully you won't hear from me again too soon.
  15. Greetings! I don't know what I'm doing, or not doing, but whenever I post it ends up on the last page under Forum Topics with the word "moved" beside it, and it never ends up going on the first page of the post. I have a couple on there (one from a couple of weeks ago I think) and perhaps I'm missing a step or something.
  16. The banana bread recipe (as found in the Incredible Edible Gluten Free Food for Kids book) is as follows: Ingredients: 1/2 c br. rice flour 1/2 c. rice flour 1/2 c tapioca flour 1/4 c potato starch flour 2/3 c sugar 2 tsp baking powder 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp xanthan gum 1/4 tsp salt 1/3 c shortening 2 Tbsp milk 2 eggs ...
  17. Good morning everyone. I have a couple of baking related questions that I'm hoping the more experienced gluten-free baker can help me with. First of all, I found a great banana loaf recipe (Incredible Edible), and my kids love it. It is so easy that I thought perhaps I could make a savoury variety for them as well for school lunches. So, could I replace...
  18. Thanks. Some good ideas. I typed us a cover sheet to send with him to camp that summarized celiac disease, and what the specific issues are--hopefully that will help. I also took my son out on a protein bar quest and we managed to find some by Rebar that are gluten free (stated right on the package too--very helpful!), and he loved it, so I guess I'll...
  19. Oh, that would be so great to have him go to a camp specifically for kids with celiac. I am a little concerned that he will feel different and perhaps even be treated that way by the other kids. I'll look into some protein bars, that's a good idea--at least I know that he'll be getting something health. I'm looking forward to talking to the chef next month...
  20. Beverly Hi there. That sounds so much like my daughter. She is almost 19 months old, and has had a similar sounding rash, on and off, for about 6 months. It looks painful and like little pimples with white heads. Sometimes they kind of burst and blister. She also has some wierd poops (constipation, or loose etc.). We think the rash is DH as well...
  21. Well, we decided to send our two oldest kids (one of which has celiac) to summer camp (sleep away) this summer for the first time. I was wondering if anyone has had any positive or negative experiences in this department. After speaking to one of the people that run the camp, she checked with the chef and he said that they would try to accomodate his diet...
  22. Wow! Thanks for all of your advice and input--I'm actually feeling hopeful that, with some trial and error, we might acutally hit on something palatable. I just printed off the whole post so now, it's time for some research.
  23. Jennifer- That is too funny about your little one. It's good to have an advocate! It sounds like a mixed kitchen is somewhat of a norm, eh? We are still just trying to figure out what's going to work--experimenting if you will. If everyone can tolerate going completely gluten free (at least while at home), then it'll be easier. I get so scatter...
  24. Carla--Wow, it's hard to believe that such a small amount can really make a difference. Thanks for the advice. With my son, it is tough because he has few (if any) detectable symptoms. It's extra difficult to know if we are doing everything right. It's also very hard for him to understand the implications of eating gluten when he has no outward ill effects...
  25. Okay, so we have been on the gluten-free diet for all of 3 days, and it already feels like forever. The dinners are fairly easy to manage, but there is a gap where bread and crackers used to be. Perhaps someone can offer up some brand names or a bread machine recipe that tastes close to the real thing?? I'm new to this, so perhaps there is no such thing...
