The Celiac Family

Mosaics

My nephew got married this past weekend. All of my bros. and my sister, and all but two of my mother's siblings attended. The wedding was in Longview, so my out-of-town relatives came here for a couple of days, then we all drove to Longview for a weekend of parties.

My brother and his wife, parents of the groom, paid for our hotel rooms for the weekend. They also invited us all to the rehearsal dinner. My sister-in-law was very careful about the menu and quizzed the chef thoroughly about the gluten content. We had six family members, including me, attending that have celiac disease. There were probably more of us that are undiagnosed. Anyway, she had told us originally that she thought we could eat everything except the cream sauce that went on the meat. When I was being served, I originally declined the sauce, but it looked safe, so I asked the chef what was in it. It was a simple sauce with cream, butter, salt and pepper, so we could eat it after all. We had a wonderful dinner and could eat everything except the chocolate cake dessert.

There was a simple reception after the wedding in which was served cake. I didn't have any of that, of course. My daughter ate it, though. I asked her why she was cheating and she said, "It's wedding cake!" As far as I know, she didn't have any immediate reaction, but she has been extremely fatigued since we've been home. She's going to the doctor to get her blood tested to see if her B12 is low again. It may be, but I'm thinking that the fatigue is due, in large part, to her eating that cake.

After the wedding, my parents hosted a 50th wedding anniversary party for my mother's twin sister and her husband. That was great fun. We went to a Mexican restaurant in which my mother had rented a private room and had a buffet set up. They made special quesadillas with corn tortillas for us CDers.

Then on Sunday, we all went to church together, stopped for lunch, then drove home. The last of my family houseguests flew home last night amid flight delays and cancelations due to the storms. Everyone has arrived home exhausted, but safely.
