I need some help. A group of relatives is going to Ixtapa at Christmas and really wanted me and my husband to go. My relatives realize the difficulty I am up against. I need some suggestions on how to solve my food problems.

For what its worth, the further south you go in Mexico, the more dependent the area is on corn/maize than on flour/wheat.

Having said that, you should take a few "gluten-free explanation' cards with you -- those are always helpful.

Concentrate on fresh food while you are there -- seafood - ceviche - fresh fish - spiny lobster etc. Also, quite a bit of Mexican food is gluten-free -- refried beans, corn tortillas (have them cook them in a seperate area than flour tortillas (or just bring your own and have them microwave them for you!), salsa is normally gluten-free, pico de gallo is gluten-free, most of the meats are -- just make sure the marinade is gluten-free (no soy sauce or seasonings).

I went to Cancun a few years back and brought my own bread and had eggs every morning, a burger for lunch/dinner and seafood at night.

You can do this -- it just takes preparation, bringing things with you *food and cards) and communicating with the hotel (I ate at my hotel like every day/night because I developed a relationship with the waiters --- TIP them well and they will take care of you!!!!)

Again, remember that most of these places cater "americanized" mexican food, so just make sure you stick to the most traditional because there´s a lower chance for it to contain gluten. ;)

During the Christmas holidays I will be travelling to Ixtapa with my husband and some other relatives. I am nervous about what I am going to eat. I am planning to bring some food with me, so I won't go hungry. Does anyone have any advice. Thanks

Went to Neuvo Vallarta last spring to a time share resort and did fine. You can always order corn tortillas with beans and rice, salsa etc.---fresh broiled fish, broiled steak, potatoes, salads, vegetables, fruits. My granddaughter who has celiac disease(age 6 at the time) and I (gluten intolerant) ate off the buffets and ordered off menus and didn't get sick. If you have a kitchen in your unit, then go to the grocery store and stock up on some things that are gluten-free or bring some things from home. The water in Nuevo Vallarta is safe, however, I think in Ixtapa, you might just want to drink bottled. Have a blast.

      I was tested back in 2017 and my TTG-IGA was mildly elevated (an 11 with reference range <4) but my EMA was negative and biopsy was negative. Fast forward to 2 weeks ago where I was like y'know what, I still have so many symptoms and I'm always so sick, I should repeat this, thinking it was not going to be positive.  I also found out through 23 and me that I do have the HLA-DQ2.5 gene so I thought it would be good to repeat given my ongoing symptoms.       This varies a lot from person to person. I include foods that are not certified gluten-free but are labelled "gluten-free", while super sensitive people only use certified gluten-free. Both types of products have been found to contain gluten, so there are no guarantees either way: It you are in the super sensitive group, eating a whole foods based diet where you prepare everything is the safest bet, but it's also difficult. Eating out is the the most risky, even if a restaurant has a gluten-free menu. I also include items that are naturally gluten-free, for example refried beans, tuna, pasta sauces, salsas, etc., which have a low overall risk of contamination.
