Valtrex DH & HSV Question

Hello,

PCP wondering if I was misdiagnosed with HSV2? I have the recurrent rash at base of my spine and  the plan is to run labs if it happens again. I have used Valtrex to manage this. I could find no studies of Valtrex on autoimmune or in the treatment of DH. Is it ever used to treat DH and if it works on HSV why would it not work on DH? Also do people ever have both HSV2 and DH?

Valtrex is an anti-viral and that is why it is prescribed for use in HSV as it is a virus.  DH is not a virus but an autoimmune reaction to gluten and only occurs when you ingest something with gluten if you have Celiac Disease.  The only treatment for DH is a strict gluten-free diet...... Valtrex will not work on DH.

Do you have Celiac or have you been tested for it?

I would imagine that anyone with DH could also contract HSV so it is possible to have both.

      Thoughts? Non-endoscopic Celiac diagnosis in two year old

      Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early. She had so many symptoms though that to me it was clear something was wrong. yeah I think we had better test us and the other kids as well.

      @GlorietaKaro, your respiratory reactions to gluten make me wonder if there might also be an allergic (anaphylaxis) component at work here.

In the meantime, I will carry on has I have been— it’s working! Thanks also for the validation— sometimes I just feel crushed by disbelief. Not enough to make me eat gluten though—
