Hi, I'll be travelling to Sacramento in June for a business trip and would like to know some places where I can eat while over there? I'll be staying at the Sacramento Hilton, and I'm not familiar with the area at all, so it would be great to have some suggestions

thanks B)

A great place to go in Old Town Sacramento is the Pilothouse Restaurant and Delta Lounge on the Delta King. They have Gluten Free items indicated right on the menu and offer Redbridge gluten-free beer.

I go there occasionally. I am not very familiar with the area around the Hilton, though. There is an Outback Steakhouse in Sacramento. Last time I ate there, I had crouton crumbs in my salad (as if someone put them in and then took them out), but I spotted it and when I pointed it out to the waiter he appeared appropriately horrified and brought me a new salad that, he said, he watched them make himself.

Last time I was in Sacramento a few weeks ago I ate at Johnny Rocket's, in the Westfield Plaza near Old Sac. I really liked that because I could sit at the counter and watch them prepare my food.

Oats naturally contain a protein called avenin, which is similar to the gluten proteins found in wheat, barley, and rye. While avenin is generally considered safe for most people with celiac disease, some individuals, around 5-10% of celiacs, may also have sensitivity to avenin, leading to symptoms similar to gluten exposure. You may fall into this category, and eliminating them is the best way to figure this out. Some people substitute gluten-free quinoa flakes for oats if they want a hot cereal substitute. If you are interested in summaries of scientific publications on the topic of oats and celiac disease, we have an entire category dedicated to it which is here: https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/oats-and-celiac-disease-are-they-gluten-free/
