Gluten Friendly Eating In Boston/billerica Ma And Scarborough, Maine

My family is traveling to Billerica, MA and Scarborough, Maine next month. This is our first trip since my daughter (5) was diagnosed with celiac so we are more than a little nervous. I would appreciate any advice on restaurants or grocery stores that would have some gluten free options.

All I can get in my hotel is a fridge and a microwave. I plan to buy a cheap toaster once we get there....

Thanks!

I've had good luck in Boston--most upper end places will know what you're talking about, particularly if you bring a Triumph dining card along. I wouldn't risk the pubs though. Don't forget about Legal Seafoods--their gluten free menu is great. They even have an LS in the airport, so I was able to get a gluten free meal before going onto the plane.

I can help you out with Billerica - I work there.

There is a Whole Foods in Bedford, MA which is the next town over from Billerica.

It's expensive, but you can get many gluten-free staples there. Demoula's, the local supermarket, also has an okay gluten-free section.

As for eating out....Billerica itself doesn't have many restaurants that aren't fast food, pubs or Italian joints, and I'm thinking that since your daughter is 5 she isn't so much into the ethnic foods yet?

But if she is on the Billerica/Tewksbury line on Rt 38 is Mango II - a very good Thai restaurant. On Boston Rd is a restaurant called the Emerald Rose. I get their salads with no problems and find them to be very accomodating. They will grill plain chicken on a peice of foil for me.

You can find the locations for any of these places on superpages.com

Good Luck!

Thanks Nicole, I've been to Legal and that's a good option.

ehrin, Thanks for the info and GO SOX! Poor Pedro last night, huh?

Anyway, I work from my home in NC but my company (Orbotech) is headquartered in Billerica on Manning Rd. right off of Middlesex. I will be staying off of Concord Road. I'll look up those restaurants and give them a try.

Thanks again!

There is a Legal's at the Burlington Mall (Burlington borders Billerica). The mall is right on Middlesex Turnpike. I have had great success at that particular Legals.

There is also an Uno's in the mall and they now offer gluten-free options (look on their website)..although I have never eaten there. Outback Steakhouse is also in Burlington...not too far from Middlesex Turnpike. If you go on their website you can get directions from where you will be staying to the restaurant (prob a ten minute drive). Good luck!

Oh man I felt bad for him...I was actually expecting a better series than this because the Mets have had such a fantastic season so far. You could definitely tell that he was having a hard time pitching against his former team mates, which is my biggest gripe with pitchers - NO EMOTIONAL PITCHING!!! :P

I was always a "get rid of Lowe" advocate for the same reason...

here's to our 12th straight win and a sweep tonight!

GO SOX!!!

Welcome to the forum, @Trish G! "Gluten free" does not necessarily equate to "no gluten". According to FDA standards it actually means that a food product contains no more than 20ppm of gluten. This is safe for most celiacs but would not be for those who are on the more sensitive end of the spectrum. So, it would depend on the individual celiac and their level of sensitivity to minor amounts of gluten. That's the long and nuanced answer. The short answer is that it is a product derived from wheat and so you can be certain it will contain some residual amounts of gluten. No gluten removal process is 100% effective. So, to be absolutely certain, stay away from it. Have you tried chia seeds? Very high in fiber and quickly turns into a gel when added to water. Make sure you get seeds that are gluten free if you decide to try it.

I was taking Benefiber for my IBS-C before my celiac diagnosis. It does say Gluten Free but lists Wheat Dextrin on the label. I really dont like psyllium fiber, so is there anything else I can take or is the Benefiber really ok for someone with Celiac disease?  Thanks!!!

Abdominal pain and an itchy stomach were the symptoms I asked to see a GI about. Now I’ve learned these other symptoms—that I have but attributed to other issues—could also be related to celiac disease:  fatigue joint pain canker sores numbness or tingling in hands or feet difficulty with coordination anemia headaches neutropenia I never dreamed in a million years she would consider celiac disease. It was a shock to me. It’s definitely not what I went to her for.

@Rejoicephd, I'm not a doctor, but I experienced severe thiamine deficiency.  Your symptoms seem really familiar.  Malabsorption is a real thing that happens with Celiac.  A multivitamin is not going to prevent nor correct nutritional deficiencies.    Doctors do not recognize nutritional deficiency symptoms.  Gastrointestinal Beriberi is not recognized often.  Caused by thiamine deficiency, high dose thiamine supplements or IV administration with other vitamins, minerals and glucose under doctor's care is needed.   Thiamine deficiency is found in anemia.  Thiamine deficiency in the kidneys can result in electrolyte imbalances and cloudy urine.  Thiamine deficiency can cause high blood sugar which can cause cloudy urine.  Dehydration can cause cloudy urine.   I'm linking some PubMed articles.  You see if your symptoms match.  Discuss the possibility of Gastrointestinal Beriberi with one of your specialists soon!  Just to rule it out.  I'm very concerned.   I'm linking some PubMed articles.  You see if your symptoms match.   Thiamine, gastrointestinal beriberi and acetylcholine signaling https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12014454/#ref3 From Section 3: "In conclusion, TD limited to the gastrointestinal system may be an overlooked and underdiagnosed cause of the increasingly common gastrointestinal disorders encountered in modern medical settings. Left unattended, it may progress to wet or dry beriberi, most often observed as Wernicke encephalopathy.". . And... Refeeding Syndrome https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK564513/

What are your symptoms? What has brought you to the point where you sought celiac disease testing?
