Antibodie Test

Hi, I'm a nineteen year old thats been through battles trying to figure out my health problems for years. My doctor did a test for the antibodies necessary to diagnose celiac disease(which I had not even heard of until my first visit with this doctor last month!and has lead me to researching the disease)Anyhow, I just got the results back in the mail and have no clue what they mean, and am wondering if someone could help me out? My test shows I have a reading of 20 IgG, 6 IgA, and 5 tTg...I see that it does say that 20 IgG is abnormal, but does this mean I am celiac :( ? This is really stressing me out! Thanks.

out of curiosity - which IgG?

Racheleona Apprentice

Uuuumm, All it says is IgG class, and it's listed under anti-gliadin antibodies...

tarnalberry Community Regular

That's what I was wondering - if it was the anti-gliandin antibody... (I only had one raised antibody, and that was anti-reticulin.)

I'd guess your doctor would say that's a negative test, but given that it shows a reaction to the protein in wheat, I'd try the gluten-free diet (be very strict on it) to see if it helps you. But I'm not a doctor!

Even though the one's positive, I think you're right, I have been gluten free for 2 weeks, (with one mishap of licking an envelope) and haven't noticed a difference. Iam not sure what you mean by strict, but I have been mainly eating eggs, health valley corn chex with Pacific brand rice milk, organic turkey, bacon, and chicken, plain rice, raw veggies and fruits, raw nuts, and beans, and today tried the Pamela's gluten free choc. chip cookies, and rice/almond bread. It's dissapointing though, I thought I was going to gain weight consuming many starches/carbs.(at least this is what I have read) but I have lost 5 pounds which I cannot afford to do being 5'5" and now 104. But I also think it would take awhile to notice changes from going gluten-free b/c the symptoms I have are drastic such as no menstruation for almost two years, hair thinning, etc. but my energy levels and concentration have not changed. I was in a way almost hoping I have Celiac disease b/c then I have a reason why I haven't menstruated and can change that, otherwise I am still left hanging worrying if I will be able to have children : (. I wonder if just having a wheat allergy can cause such drastic problems as I have had since I was 15? Anyways, I am babling on my frustrations! Thanks for your reply to my message Tiffany!

Desperately need a vitamin D supplement. I've reacted to most brands I've tried.

Thanks a lot for your response! Can you maybe specify which kind of cheeses I should be cautious about? Camembert/Brie and blue cheeses (the molds of which are nowadays mostly grown on gluten-free media, though, so I've read, right?) or other ones as well? Also, I was under the impression that yeast is generally gluten-free if not declared otherwise. Is that false?

I agree with @trents, but thank you for bringing this up here!

Hi @trents, yes I've had my levels checked in Dec 2025 which revealed vit D deficiency. I considered eggs although they only contain about 45 IU vitamin D/egg. I need 2000 IU vitamin D for maintenance as per my doctor. Although now, I likely need way more than that to treat the deficiency. My doctor has yet to advise me on dosing for deficiency. I've also considered cod liver oil, although again, if it's processed in a facility that has gluten, especially on flour form, I worried to test it, even if they have protocols in place to mitigate cross-contamination with gluten.

Welcome to celiac.com, @Jane02! Have you had your serum D levels checked for deficiency/sufficiency? What about cod liver oil? Egg yolks can also be a good source of vitamin D.

Hello, I'm very discouraged. I've been trying to find a safe vitamin mineral supplement brand for months and am tired of testing one after the other and experiencing my typical 'glutening' reactions. I'm really feeling the nutritional deficiencies set in. I'm doing the best I can to get these nutrients from my food, although it's impossible for me to intake enough vitamin D as I can't have dairy and have insufficient sun exposure in the northern hemisphere. I've tried B Complex from Country Life (certified gluten-free) - horrible reaction. I've tried Metagenics vitamin D tab (certified glute-free) - bad reaction. I've tried liquid vitamin D Thorne and D Drops - reactions were mild since I tried a drop of a drop. I understand there could be other things I'm reacting to in my diet, although my diet/intake is pretty consistent with minimal variables so I do think it's something in these supplements. I understand I could be reacting to the active ingredient vitamin/mineral itself or even the filler ingredients. I tried the vitamin D drops since the only filler ingredient is coconut oil, in some brands, which I know I can tolerate really well on its own - I cook with coconut oil frequently and have no 'glutening' reactions at all. Perhaps I'm reacting to the vitamin D itself, although I eat fatty fish every few days, an entire fillet with no 'glutening' reactions, which contains anywhere between 400-600 IU per fillet so I shouldn't be sensitive to vitamin D. All this to say, I'm desperately looking for at least a safe vitamin D supplement. Does anyone know of a safe vitamin D supplement brand? I'd love to know if there are any supplement brands that have absolutely no gluten (especially in flour form) in their facilities. I've heard of Kirkman having no grains in their facility - I may try this brand. Has anyone reacted to this brand?
