When To Test Sibling Of A Celiac?

My 5 yr old was dx with Celiac at age 2 and has grown wonderfully and lived a healthy gluten-free life.

Her little sister who is 2.5 has mostly been gluten-free but in recent months I've slacked. The pediatrician (whom i completely trust), told me a couple of weeks ago that I should start regularly giving her a little gluten every day and test her at her 3rd birthday which is at the end of March. I notice that she is more frequently complaining of tummy aches and tonight was in a lot of pain after a trip to the ice cream store where she ate an entire gluten filled cone. I'm wondering if I have to wait 2 more months to have her blood tested, or if I could test her now instead? I don't want to wait and watch her go through any pain if she is in fact celiac.

Do I run the risk of having to draw blood again at the end of March and have her tested now even if the results come back inconclusive? What would you if you were me? I just don't want to see her in pain. I want to know!!

Any advice is appreciated!

If it were me, I'd have her tested now. It's not as though age three is the magic time where blood tests become definitive proof. If she has to have her blood drawn again in a couple of months, then so be it. I don't mean to be unsympathetic, but if you don't make a big deal of the blood draw and distract her during it, then it probably won't be a big deal. Some M&Ms after wouldn't hurt either.

Many people here will tell you that both blood tests and biopsy in young children is notoriously unreliable. My son had overwhelmingly positive blood results and a positive biopsy at 5 1/2 years old. His older brother had definitely negative results. Neither of my children complained of symptoms, though. We intend to test big brother every couple of years.

My dd had a negative blood test, but her symptoms disappeared as soon as we took the gluten out of her diet.

Your dd's body is definitely telling you something- do you need a positive blood test to confirm what you probably already know?

      I have had celiac for many years and still had terrible digestion. I cook from scratch, never eat anything with gluten ( A Gut that needs special attention seems to affect many who suffer from celiac) .  I made my own Kombucha, it helped my Gut much more than the yogurt I made but I still had issues. Water Kefir did nothing. As a last resort I made MILK Kefir and it has really started healing my Gut. It has been about 2 months now and I am doing so much better. It was trial and error getting the right PH in the Kefir ferment that agreed with my stomach, too little ferment, too much, I finally hit the right one for me. Milk Kefir has the most probiotics than any of the other. I can't find my notes right now but there are at least 30 probiotics in Kefir, Kombucha has about 5-7 and yogurt around 3 if I recall correctly.  I wish you all the best, I know how frustrating this condition can be.

      @cristiana Hi, thank you so much, I will look into those books for sure! And get bloodwork at my next appointment. I have never been told I have TMJ, but I have seen information on it and the nerve issue while googling this devil plague in my mouth. Thank you so much for the advice!

      Peanut Butter cookies - on the crisp side.   approx 20 smallish cookies  1 C  plus 2 tblsp rounded. 'natural' peanut butter ( the kind you have to stir to blend the PB & oils)....  I know, it's a pain!! 1/2 c granulated sugar ....plus 2 tblsp dark brown sugar 1/4 c olive oil... plus 1 tblsp 1 large egg .....and 1 tsp vanilla 2 tsp cinnamon - optional but is yummy with the PB mix the above.  In another bowl mix the following dry ingredients: 1 cup brown rice flour  ( I use this  flour as it leaves no yucky after taste in my cookies & lb cakes..... and coffee cake, I buy it at the "Bulk Barn" here in Canada....... states side try health food stores??? I'm not sure where you can buy bulk food that also carries gluten free flours. 1/2 tsp baking soda.....1/4 tsp salt   (I use the pink sea salt) Mix well or sift, then mix with wet ingredients. heat oven to 350f, line baking sheet with parchment paper. Roll about 2 tblsp dough between your hands, place on cookie sheet and press down  with a fork.   The flatter the cookie the crispier it is.     Bake 13-14 min  When done leave on baking sheet till cool.
