Your Experience With Testing

We had our first Gastro appointment last week and they drew blood. This coming week we go back for the breath test and upper GI where he is to drink something than have an image taken of it.

As I am new to the process and confused about what to do I was just wondering what others experiences have been. Our 9yr old still has horrific gas, diarrhea, stomach pain, rash, nasuea, fatigue and general pedi was no help so our eggs are in the GI's basket now.

Why is it so hard to get an answer?

We will talk to the Dr this week the same day the breath test and GI thing is done to get results but just betting on previous experience I doubt there will be an answer.

Its all going to depend on the Dr. My daughter had her blood drawn and about 5 day later (including the weekend) I received a phone call that she had tested positive for Celiac Disease. Her MRI (we thought it could be a brain tumor) and upper GI were canceled and we scheduled a biopsy instead.

The biopsy was about 2 weeks after that phone call and I had to continue giving her gluten until then. The day before her biopsy was the last day I ever gave her gluten.

So it took about 3 weeks from blood work to biopsy... an we had about 2-3 weeks of sever symptoms before the blood work.

Thanks, that's a great addition that I hadn't thought of.

Other diseases, medical conditions, medications and even (for some people) some non-gluten foods can cause villous atrophy. There is also something called refractory celiac disease but it is pretty uncommon.

knitty kitty asks a very relevant question. So many people make the mistake of experimenting with the gluten free diet or even a reduced gluten diet soon before getting formally tested.

Another great fiber option is dried apricots. Four of them give you 3g of fiber and I find they don't produce all the gas that some other high fiber options do. They taste good too. Costco sells a large bag of them that are labeled gluten-free so you don't have to worry about cross contamination issues like you might in bulk grocery settings.

Wow, that's alot of info, Thanks!!!! I had my intake with Nutrionist where we went over basics and then will have follow up where we will talk about all the questions I've come up with (including the fiber question and so many more). I'll talk to her about the info you provided as well.  Thanks again (newbie here 😀)
