My son has been gluten-free for six months. It took him four weeks for the poop to get better, but is still bulky and floating - still only going every other day. Anyway, behavior has been everywhere with mood swings. One day really hyper/silly but happy and the next fragile. I don't know how he could be getting gluttened as I am a stay-home mom and make all his bread. Went back to the doctor (again) and said I wanted more blood work - ferritin, vitamins, etc. She added a thyroid as well. Thyroid is fine as well as iron, but 10 of 22 other items are flagged - calcium, folate, serum protein, sodium, etc. Even though some of the markers are for liver function, they can also stem from intestinal inflammation, etc. I would have though he would be healing up better by now. I'm wondering whether there is an underlying bacteria problem. We're seeing a ped. on Mon. I'm just glad I took him back in - cause I knew my boy wasn't feeling right. Nathan is 4. Any feedback is appreciated.

Debbie

Are you a totally gluten-free house???? Could he be getting CC'd or hidden gluten from something???

Are they going to work to fix the other problems?

also some don't get better right away. Some take longer than 6 months....however it sounds like he is still getting something or has some other underlying conditions!

Good Luck and I hope your little one feels better soon!!!!

If your house is not gluten free are you cooking with wheat flour?

Have you double checked everything that you are feeding him?

He might need to be dairy free also. Have you thought about testing for all of that thru enterolab.com?

I really think that if your house is not gluten-free then that is the problem. It is hard...

We are mostly gluten-free. My husband and I have oatmeal in the mornings - use the same pan, etc. everyday. We also have premade tortillas for when it is just us snacking. Other than that, we all eat the same bread and don't have any other cracker/snack type items than gluten-free. I've called twice on most items we eat. gluten-free soy sauce, salad dressing, etc. Of course, it could be CC from corn chips, etc., but I do think it is an underlying condition that needs to be looked into. I don't know what the ped will do, but it seems like something should be done and will be done further since the blood test suggests something is awry.

most corn chips are okay. sounds like your house is pretty safe. Are you making sure that you are washing your hands after you touch a flour tortilla before touching his plate/food?

what about play doh? Lotions? Shampoo? your hand cream & makeup? Toothpaste? BTW they say that children should just brush with water & then floss. I hate the chemicals & artificial sugar in toothpaste. I switched to baking soda...

Is he getting something at a friends house?

Scott I also have different symptoms than most people. It affects me bad. Stomach ache, headache, nauseous, heart racing, whole body shaking, can't walk then my throat starts to close. It attacks my nervous system. The only thing that saves me is a 1/2 of Xanax...it calms down my nervous system

Scott Adams. I was dealing with a DR that didn't care about me being celiac. I repeatedly told him that I was celiac and is everything gluten-free. He put an acrylic lens from j&j. I called the company to ask about gluten and was told yes that the acrylic they use has gluten....then they back tracked immediately and stopped talking to me. The Dr didn't care that I was having issues. It took me 6 months and a lot of sickness to get it removed.... which can only happen within 6 months. The Dr that took it out said that it was fused and that's why I lost vision. If they would have removed it right away everything would be fine. He put in a silicone one that was gluten-free and I've had no issues at all in the other eye. Do not do acrylic!

Welcome @Martha Mitchell, I too would like to know more about your prior lenses, and especially about the potential of gluten in lenses. In theory this should not harm most celiacs, as the autoimmune reaction normally begins in the gut, however, in those who are super sensitive or have dermatitis herpetiformis it may be a potential issue.

It's most likely going to be a celiac disease diagnosis based on your blood test results, but wait for your doctor to give you a green light for going gluten-free, as they may want to do additional testing. This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):
