Flu Like Symptoms And Insane Irritability!

Hi Guys!

I havent been diagnosed with celiac yet (mostly because my previous doctor was an uninformed, arrogant wanker! - im getting a second opinion this week) but im pretty sure that I have it - the more i research, the more im convinced.

I suffer from daily constipation (with bouts of diarrhea), bloating, cramping, headaches, foggy brain, fatigue, lower back pain, anxiety and depression but for the last few weeks ive had flu like symptoms - stuffy nose, itchy eyes etc...

Are these possible symptoms of celiac or do I keep getting a mild cold because my body's immune system is all messed up from the celiac??

Also....ive noticed something lately...everytime I eat pasta about an hour afterwards I feel insanly irritable, agitated and grumpy! Its so frustrating!

Could this be because of the gluten in pasta?

I cant wait for my next appointment! Im ready to be tested for celiac and Im praying that that is whats wrong! Ive had bowel problems for about 8-9 years (im 26) and have bounced from doctor to doctor. Ive been told to eat more fibre SOOOOO many times but it doesnt help me - metamucil blocks me up for a week! Ive also been told I have IBS and over-active thyroid...no solution has worked. I pray celiac is the answer!

Thanks for responding guys! I apprecaite any feedback!

Hi wilem, I also live in Australia and to be honest there are few doctors that seem to be up on celiac disease. My daughter is 16 months old, has all the classic symptoms and celiac in the family and an allergy specialist said "just give her bits and pieces over time and desensitize her"! I so wanted to cry, all this time waiting to see him for him to tell us to feed her stuff that is slowly poisoning her!

I also have lower back pain that comes and goes around the kidney area sometimes on both sides is this where yours is? I also have flu like symptoms but I get aches and pains and very tired. I'm also not diagnosed but was very sick as a child and the symptoms seemed to have reappeared in recent weeks

Hi!

Thanks for responding!

I know, its so frustrating! Every doctor I have seen in the past has just told me to eat more fibre and drink more water!! The last doctor I saw diagnosed me with over active thyroid (a known side-effect of celiac) but refused to test me for celiac because I dont get a lot of diarrhea (im constipation 90% of the time)! He thinks I have IBS but gave me no help in trying to find the trigger - just put me on a stool softner (which made me feel like crap) and suggested I go on anti-depressants!! What kind of doctor prescibes anti-depressants without doing any tests!! I was furious!!

Anyway, My lower back pain is the same as your, around the kidney area and right across my back. Its a dull ache and is so annoying!

The flu symptoms are really just a stuffy nose and itchy, tired eyes. Mind you, my whole body feels achy and tired alot of the time - joint and muscle pain etc. Everyday I have a headache to some degree! I cant concentrate long enough to get anything done at work!

I really hope my new doctor is going to listen to me!!

That's awful about your child - I hope you find a solution soon!

Hi Wilem- I have had all of your symptoms while eating gluten and dairy. I tested positive for both 2 months ago. I had the flu like symptoms for 5 mos before I stopped eating these foods. Most of my symptoms have gone away. The only lingering problem is fatigue. I think it will just take a little more time.

Hope you feel better soon.

What helped me greatly with the sort of symptoms you've mentioned are a sublingual methylcobalamin (B12), and magnesium. From muscle and joint pain, to brain fog, foul mood, sleep patterns, fatigue, and so much more. I consider these things as indispensable. Other supplements to consider are a B-complex, vitamin D, calcium, zinc, folic acid, potassium, and perhaps iron. Really there are numerous nutrients in which you may be deficient.

Sounds like you're still eating gluten. If so, why not try gluten-free, even for a few days? It should not interfere with testing for that short time, but of course the diet is far more conclusive than any test a doctor can do. You could try a package of Open Original Shared Link rice pasta. I think their pasta is actually better than any wheat pasta I ever had (and I always sought the very finest durham semolina). I'd bet you don't have the bad reaction you describe.

I had that recurring flu-like symptoms on and off for ages and I am pretty sure that it is a food allergy. I feel like you;re coming down with something that never quite seems to materialise. Does this sound like you? lots of half day colds etc

My reaction to a gluten bolus exposure is similar to yours, with 2-3 hours of severe abdominal cramps and intractable emesis followed by several hours of diarrhea. I don't necessarily equate that one large exposure to gluten with significant intestinal lining damage, however. I think it's just a violent reaction to a what the body perceives to be a somewhat toxic substance that I am no longer tolerant of because I have quit exposing myself to it regularly. It's just the body purging itself of it rather than an expression of significant damage. Before diagnosis, when I was consuming gluten daily, I had little to no GI distress. I was, for the most part, a "silent celiac". The damage to my small bowel lining didn't happen all at once but was slow and insidious, accumulating over a period of years. The last time I got a big shot of gluten was about three years ago when I got my wife's wheat biscuits mixed up with my gluten-free ones. There was this acute reaction after about two hours of ingestion as I described above. I felt washed out for a few days and fully recovered within a week or so.  Now, I'm a 74-year-old male. So, I'm not worried about being pregnant. And I don't want to contradict your physicians advice. But I just don't think you have done significant damage to your small bowel lining by one episode of significant gluten ingestion. I just don't think it works that way.

Wondering about some thoughts on how long to wait to try to get pregnant after a gluten exposure?  I have been diagnosed for 10 years and have followed the diet strictly. I have been cross contaminated before, but have never had a full on gluten exposure. I went to a restaurant recently, and the waiter messed up and gave me regular bread and told me it was gluten free. 2 hours later I was throwing up for the whole evening. I have never had that kind of reaction before as I have never had such a big exposure. My husband and I were planning to start trying to get pregnant this month. My dr did blood work to check for electrolytes and white blood cells, but did not do a full nutritional panel. Most of my GI symptoms have resolved in the past 2 weeks, but I am definitely still dealing with brain fog, fatigue and headaches. My dr has recommended I wait 3 months before I start to try to get pregnant.   I have read else where about how long it can take for the intestine to fully heal, and the impacts gluten exposure can have on pregnancy. I guess I am really wondering if anyone has had a similar experience? How long does it take to heal after 1 exposure like that, after following the diet so well for 10 years? Is 3 months an okay amount of time to wait? Is there anything I can do in the meantime to reduce my symptoms?

I’ve used tinctures and made my own edibles with gluten-free ingredients to stay safe. Dispensary staff don’t always know about gluten, so I double-check labels or just make my own.

It's great to hear that there are some good doctors out there, and this is an example of why having a formal diagnosis can definitely be helpful.

Update: I have a wonderful new gastroenterologist. She wants to be sure there’s nothing more serious, like refractory celiac, going on. She ordered various tests including some micronutrient tests that no one has ever ordered before.  I’m deficient in folate and zinc and starting supplements for both. I’m so glad I decided to go to a new GI!
