I have been diagnosed two weeks ago today, but i'm feeling very weak, my doc put me back on the iron 2/daily. How long will it take for my body to start absorbing the nutrients, I wanna put on some weight, I really need it..I'm very thin. :(

Not to get you down, but for some it can take several weeks, months and a few can even take up tp a year. It really depepnds on how much healing your gut needs to do. You may take a while to heal, but you will probably begin to notice the positive effects of being gluten-free long before your healing is complete, maybe even very soon. When my son went gluten-free, he was back to normal in about 6 weeks.

I know it's difficult and learning the diet can be very frustrating, but think about how good you will feel when your body is at it's best for the first time in your life. Also the extended healing time just serves as more of an incentive to remain gluten-free, because you will realize how long it takes to get better if you cheat.

Take care and you'll be gaining weight before you know it!

Mario,

I've been gluten free for 2 months now and am just getting enough energy to climb the stairs without getting out of breath. My energy is returning in tiny increments, but I am noticing a difference.

Hang in there!!!!

Mario,

I've been gluten-free 2 months today and I'm feeling better energy-wise. I used to faint A LOT... but I'm on iron now as well as centrum ( a multi-vitamin ) and calcium with Vitamin D. It will take some time, but believe me, you'll start to feel different. My nails used to be soooooooooooo brittle and weak and wouldn't really grow that long. Now, I can't believe it... they are strong and are growing and look healthy. You'll see results in time. Keep it up and remember, taking that iron is very important!

Wow! You're pretty young to have a diagnosis of SMA syndrome. But youth also has its advantages when it comes to healing, without a doubt. You might be surprised to find out how your health improves and how much better you feel once you eliminate gluten from your diet. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder that, when gluten is consumed, triggers an attack on the villous lining of the small bowel. This is the section of the intestines where all our nutrition is absorbed. It is made up of billions of tiny finger-like projections that create a tremendous surface area for absorbing nutrients. For the person with celiac disease, unchecked gluten consumption generates inflammation that wears down these fingers and, over time, greatly reduces the nutrient absorbing efficiency of the small bowel lining. This can generate a whole host of other nutrient deficiency related medical problems. We also now know that the autoimmune reaction to gluten is not necessarily limited to the lining of the small bowel such that celiac disease can damage other body systems and organs such as the liver and the joints and cause neurological problems.  It can take around two years for the villous lining to completely heal but most people start feeling better well before then. It's also important to realize that celiac disease can cause intolerance to some other foods whose protein structures are similar to gluten. Chief among them are dairy and oats but also eggs, corn and soy. Just keep that in mind.

I was just diagnosed at 26 after accidental finding. Any simple tips for newbies? Things a non celiac would never think of? I already went through my prescriptions and identified some medications that have gluten. Is there a beginners guide? Celiac for dummies?

Would it be rude to ask your age?

Wow! Thank you @trents I  really appreciate the responses. This line of diagnosis has me questioning a lot of symptoms over the course of my life. Very validating and very much a bummer at the same time.
