Lost Eyesite

I am curious if anyone out there has lost their eye site in one of their eyes due to celiac diease. I can see light and very blurry images out of my left eye. I have a cousin by marriage only who has lost her eye site in her left eye also. Read an articial in Scott Free newsletter about a girl who lost hers also. Is this common? Will it come back as time goes on. It has been just a year for me since I have tried to go gluten free. My cousin is only a month into it. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Have you gone to the eye specialist to get it checked out? This is very important.

Last year, the same thing happened to me, in my right eye. I was driving to my mom's with the kids when all of a sudden, I started to see a half moon of light on the edge of my eye, followed by tons of dots and stars all over my eye. Then it felt like a curtain went over my eye and I couldn't see anything except millions of little dots floating around. I went to emergency, and it was a torn retina. They had to do emergency laser eye surgery. They said if it didn't get treated quickly, the retina would detach and I would have lost the sight.....

Please go and get it checked as soon as possible......

I have been to many different eye doctors, even a saw specialists up in Portland. No one knows what is happening to my eye. I have been on many different eye drops trying to fix the problem but nothing. This last Dr. I went to said my eye looked healthy, just has a lot of inflamation in my eye. Can't figure out what is causing that. I have had test after test done to me, but nothing. I spent thousands of dollars in the past two years trying to find out what was going on. The only thing they all agree on is that Celiac disease has nothing to do with it. But that is the only thing Pat, ( my cousin by marriage only) and I have in common. Both of us have had this disease for years but just found out we had it. I remember going to Dr.s 20 years ago trying to find out what was wrong with me, only to be told I needed to see a shrink. I don't wish this on anyone.

Hi hasyn, you mention that you "tried to go gluten-free. I hope that you have made the jump into the gluten-free lifestyle now.

It is known that gluten causes damage to the central nervous system. It can cause changes that are seen in MRI's. It is related to seizure disorders and ataxia. Since the eye is part of the central nervous system it only makes sense to me that it could be affected too - but that is only my opinion. Eye doctors are not looking for a connection as far as I know.

Having increased inflammation in the eye is worrisome. How can an eye with inflammation "look healthy"? Is it just one eye? What are they doing for the inflammation? Have you had your homocystine checked to see if you are low in folate and or B12? As far as getting vision back it depends on the cause of the loss.

Sorry that you are having this problem.

Thank you for the info. I have been told by my Dr. that I do have a vit B deficinancy. Which one I do not know. This does give me something to have my Dr. check out though. Thank you. I guess I should have said that other than the imflamation in my eye, it looks healthy. Hey, everyone else was telling me it had this or that wrong with it and put me on many different eye drops. My eye just continued to get worse. I am sure most of my loss of sight is due to the eye drops. I have since found out I am allergic to preservatives, and these eye drops all had that in them. My vision gets a little better then worse again as I continue to eat things my body does not like. I am pretty good at staying away from gluten. It makes me too sick, it's just these little hidden things, like ham, bacon some chocolate etc that I eat that makes my eye site more blurry. I continue to press on. I just wish I could have found out what was wrong with me 20 years ago when I first started having problems. I appreciate everything people write to me. Lets me know, hey people do care and I am not alone.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and I found myself giggling with happiness as I read how your body reached such spring! And I hope that your current journey is also successful!! Definitely starting the food diary! So many amazing advices. And it’s very scary. It really hits all our soft spots as well as our confidence system. Most doctors I went thought I was underage despite being in my late 20s. Right now I look like am I twelve, but is also this body that’s taking so much, so I might as well love it too! Going to make the necessary changes and stay in this path. Thank you again! 🫶

Thank you so much for the information and kind message! Reading this transformed how I’ve been viewing my efforts and progress. Guess there’s still a lot to celebrate and also heal 😌  Yes, I’ve been taking it! Just recently started taking a multivitamin supplement and separated vitamin D! I also took chewable Iron polymaltose for ferritin deficiency 2 months ago but was unable to absorb any of it.  Thank you again! Hearing such gentle words from the community makes my body and heart more patient and excited for the future.

Your post demonstrates the profound frustration and isolation that so many in the Celiac community feel, and I want to thank you for channeling that experience into advocacy. The medical gaslighting you endured for decades is an unacceptable and, sadly, a common story, and the fact that you now have to "school" your own GI specialist speaks volumes about the critical lack of consistent and updated education. Your idea to make Celiac Disease a reportable condition to public health authorities is a compelling and strategic one. This single action would force the system to formally acknowledge the prevalence and seriousness of the disease, creating a concrete dataset that could drive better research funding, shape medical school curricula, and validate the patient experience in a way that individual stories alone often cannot. It is an uphill battle, but contacting representatives, as you have done with Adam Gray, is exactly how change begins. By framing it as a public health necessity—a matter of patient safety and protection from misdiagnosis and neglect—you are building a powerful case. Your voice and your perseverance, forged through thirty years of struggle, are exactly what this community needs to ensure that no one else has to fight so hard just to be believed and properly cared for.
