Biopsy For My Son

Hi all, I've read A LOT of the posts here but this is my first. :) I found out a few weeks ago I have Celiac and went gluten-free immediately with fantastic results. I'm not %100 yet but feeling better than I have in years! Our family dr also recommended having our boys try it too, as our oldest, who's almost 4, has had many issues over his short life we've been trying to work out, including sleep apnea, reflux, mild speech delay, big attentional issues, lots of ENT issues including ear and sinus infections. I had been thinking along the lines of a gluten sensitivity with him, if not Celiac, and she was aware of this. He's been doing great on the gluten-free diet. Marked improvement in the attention department, not as exhausted and congested. His issues aren't solved but some are better.

Anyway, at my older son's last GI appt he wanted to do a scope to see if they could find any reasons for his reflux. This was prior to my diagnosis. My dr updated his GI about my Celiac and he wants definitely wants to have him come in for a scope. He called and left a message this afternoon. We do want to get both the boys tested and we know the conventional way is putting them back on gluten. I'm so wary to do this. My poor little guy has spent so much of his life in haze, exhausted and just not feeling right. I'd hate to do this if I don't have to. Although, I do want to know for sure. Such an internal battle, you know?

I guess my question to you all is what would you do? Is it something that is worth it in the end? I know for a fact I wouldn't be able to eat gluten again to get the biopsy. I told my dr this and she said I didn't have to, the blood tests and symptoms were enough. I just don't know what to do! Also, in your opinion, how long should he be back on gluten? He's only been gluten-free for 2 1/2 weeks or so. Thanks for any input!!!

Megan

Megan,

I could not bare to put my son back on gluten for the biopsy. His symptom improvement was more than enough for me. That, including a positive blood test, was enough for me. I just couldn't put him under even more stress by doing the biopsy. If his improvement is significant, I would go with that.

Thanks for your reply. We haven't even done any blood work on him in the last two years. He was tested at 2 and was negative. I should get those results, come to think of it. I'm still torn. I do know he's better without gluten but it'd be nice to know if he has it, like I do. Still haven't made up my mind. How old was your son when you were going through this with him?

Yes, I, too, have osteoporosis from years of malabsorption, too.  Thiamine and magnesium are what keep the calcium in place in the bones.  If one is low in magnesium, boron, selenium, zinc, copper, and other trace minerals, ones bone heath can suffer.  We need more than just calcium and Vitamin D for strong bones.  Riboflavin B 2, Folate B 9 and Pyridoxine B 6 also contribute to bone formation and strength.   Have you had your thyroid checked?  The thyroid is important to bone health as well.  The thyroid uses lots of thiamine, so a poorly functioning thyroid will affect bone heath.

That sounds so very likely in my case! I will absolutely ask my doctor on my next bone check coming up in March... Thanks a lot!

Calcium levels as measured in the blood can be quite deceiving as the body will rob calcium from the bones to meet demands for it by other bodily functions. Also, supplementing with calcium can be counterproductive as it tends to raise gut pH and decrease absorption. More often than not, the problem is poor absorption to begin with rather than deficiency of intake amounts in the diet. Calcium needs an acidic environment to be absorbed. This is why so many people on PPIs develop osteoporosis. The PPIs raise gut pH. And some people have high gut PH for other reasons. Low pH equates to a more acidic environment whereas high pH equates to a more basic (less acidic) environment.

Kind thanks for all this valuable information! Since my Folate was/is low and also my Calcium, there IS a chance I am low in B vitamins... My doctor only measured the first two, oh and Zinc as I has twisted her arm and guess what, that was mega low too. So who knows, until I get myself tested properly, what else I am deficient in... I did a hair mineral test recently and it said to avoid All sources of Calcium. But this is confusing for me as my Ca is so low and I have osteoporosis because of this. It is my Adjusted Ca that is on the higher side and shouldn't be. So am not sure why the mineral test showed high Ca (well, it was medium in the test but relative to my lowish Magnesium, also via hair sample, it was high I was told). But anyway, thanks again for the VitB download, I will look into this most certainly!

Hello good afternoon, I was wondering if anyone has ever brought their anti-allergy pills? I have been wanting to use their Cetirizine HCI 10mg. They are called HealthA2Z and distributed by Allegiant Health.I’m also Asthmatic and these allergies are terrible for me but I also want to be sure they don’t have any sort of gluten compound.    I have tried calling them but to no avail. Has anyone ever used them? If so, did you had any problems or no problems at all?    thank you
