Fair Foods

My 13 year old gluten sensitive son and I are planning to go to the fair in a couple of weeks. We know he cannot have caramel apples, but want to confirm that candy apples would be okay? I guess cross-contamination might be an issue? He is happy that it appears that cotton candy is safe!!

I'm fairly new to this celiac stuff and had sadly thought I'd never get to eat at a fair or rodeo or football game, etc. Does anyone have experience with being able to eat at these sort of places and what has been asked to confirm the foods are okay?

You just gotta accept that there will be a certain degree of risk for CC at the fair. But my son and I have had the kettle corn, roasted corn on the cob, candy apples/carmel apples, dish of ice cream, cotton candy, fudge, and lemonade at the fair and have had no problems.

The good thing about the fair food vendors is they usually only make 1-5 items and are owner operated. You should be able to get good answers about process & ingredients. I would think that the potato places that cut the potatoes into long curly pieces and fry them into bits of greasy goodness, might be OK. Most of them only do the potatoes & soft drinks . I have gotten kettle corn from a stand where the people are making it there and can show you the oil, salt & sugar. Really, a meal from home would be healthier but... it's the fair! You gotta have some junky goodness! :P

Why wouldn't caramel apples be OK? Many caramel products are just fine. Unless the caramel is malted, it is probably safe. I'd ask the vendor.

We also do kettle corn, and sometimes turkey legs and corn on a stick depending on what they are prepared near.

They may want to also eliminate other possible causes for your symptoms/issues and are doing additional tests.  Here is info about blood tests for celiac disease--if positive an endoscopy where biopsies of your intestinal villi are taken to confirm is the typical follow up.

In the Europe the new protocol for making a celiac disease diagnosis in children is if their tTg-IgA (tissue transglutaminase IgA) levels are 10 times or above the positive level for celiac disease--and you are above that level. According to the latest research, if the blood test results are at certain high levels that range between 5-10 times the reference range for a positive celiac disease diagnosis, it may not be necessary to confirm the results using an endoscopy/biopsy: Blood Test Alone Can Diagnose Celiac Disease in Most Children and Adults TGA-IgA at or Above Five Times Normal Limit in Kids Indicates Celiac Disease in Nearly All Cases No More Biopsies to Diagnose Celiac Disease in Children! May I ask why you've had so many past tTg-IgA tests done, and many of them seem to have been done 3 times during short time intervals?

@JettaGirl, "Coeliac" is the British spelling of "celiac". Same disease.

This may sound ridiculous but is this supposed to say Celiacs? I looked up Coeliacs because you never know, there’s a lot of diseases related to a disease that they come up with similar names for. It’s probably meant to say Celiacs but I just wanted to confirm.

I was told it was to see how much damage has been caused. But just told CT with contrast not any other name for it.
