Low Weight

Hello all.

I am wondering if many have a problem gaining weight or have recently lost a lot of weight rapidly. I have had a hard time maintaining a proper weight level ever since being diagnosed with Celiac's in 2007. I am about 5'7" and weigh from 105-110lbs, never more. My Doctor said that this is very common in Celiac patients, but it is still very alarming to me. I have always been a string bean (as was my mother, grandmother, father), but recently have noticed people making remarks about my weight constantly and am starting to feel a bit uncomfortable with this. Can anyone give me some advice on how to enhance weight gain or should I just accept that this is how things are? Both would help.

I get this all the time; I'm 5'10 and 119 on a good day. I get the comments all the time.

I'm drinking protein drinks first thing in the morning...it seems to maintain the weight. I really have a hard time "putting weight on" because it seems like I'll feel better for 2 weeks, and then have some sort of relapse or something that has me eating very little or very bland foods, and I feel like I have to start over again. (I've only been at this since July '10)

the protein drinks I like the best are Orgain and I order them off amazon. they are gluten free and organic, and the chocolate is quite tasty. sometimes I'll have another around 3:00 just for the added calories.

I think I've just grown to accept that this is how I'm going to be...I don't see me packing on 20 pounds any time soon, it would just be impossible with the diet restrictions, but I feel like I'm eating healthy and starting to feel better, which is the important part. :)

im sorry... you ladies are speaking a different language no?? ;)

i have never ever in my whole life had this problem. if it will help u at all: the more complex carbs i eat- the harder it is for me to lose weight.

good luck, i guess ;)

maybe you should get your fat percentage tested... women should be AT LEAST over 11% body fat... as long as you're above that and healthy- and have a normal cycle... then you might have to just learn to love your own individual weight.

but ya, sugar & carbs packs it on me.... white rice- you can add white rice to every meal really- like the Hawaiians do- that stuff will stick at least another 5lbs on u.. it should

Thank you!

I will try Orgain. I know exactly what you are talking about with bland for weeks, seems to be a pattern. I also am being tested for a few heart and thyroid problems, which may be a reason for my poor weight gain.

Once again thank you.

There are other Celiac genes. HLA DQ 2 and HLA DQ 8 show up in people from Northern European descent.   People of Mediterranean descent have HLA DQ 7.  People of Asian descent have HLA DQ 9.   There's other Indigenous populations that have other HLA genes that code for Celiac disease.   Are you still having symptoms?   What do you include in your diet?  Are you vegetarian? Are you taking any prescription medication?  Omeprazole?  Metformin?   Do you have anemia?  Thyroid problems? Are you taking any vitamins or herbal supplements?

There are eight essential B vitamins.  They are all water soluble.  Any excess of B vitamins is easily excreted by the kidneys.   Thiamine is Vitamin B 1.  Thiamine is safe and nontoxic even in high doses.  Benfotiamine and TTFD are forms of Thiamine that the body can utilize very easily.   The form of Thiamine in the supplements you mentioned is Thiamine Mononitrate, a form that the body does not absorb well and does not utilize well.  Only about thirty percent of the amount on the label is actually absorbed in the small intestine.  Less than that can actually be used by the body.  Manufacturers add thiamine mononitrate to their products because it's cheap and shelf-stable.  Thiamine and other B vitamins break down when exposed to light and heat and over time.  Thiamine Mononitrate is a form that does not break down over time sitting on a shelf waiting for someone to buy them.  What makes Thiamine Mononitrate shelf stable makes it difficult for the body to turn into a useable form.  In fact, it takes more thiamine to turn it into a useable form.   Gastrointestinal Beriberi is a localized shortage of Thiamine in the gastrointestinal tract.  High carbohydrate meals can result in gastrointestinal symptoms of Gastric Beriberi.  Fiber is a type of carbohydrate.  So, high fiber/carbohydrate snacks could trigger Gastric Beriberi.   Since blood tests for Thiamine and other B vitamins are so inaccurate, the World Health Organization recommends trying Thiamine and looking for health improvement because it's safe and nontoxic.
